well, they are meant to be man-sized but according the the donationcoder banners, Cody is the same size as the people, if not a little bigger - or if you look at the banner at the top of this page he's a giant.

so I guess, Cody does have the magical ability to change size. the only important thing really is to decide how big he is for these wallpapers that I'm in the process of doing.

there will be normal 4:3 ratio wallpapers, wide screen 16:10 ratio and dual screen double the 4:3 size.

it still too early to say just how big Cody is.

and I'd like opinions on how big the white figures are meant to be also. please.

I'm pleased you like it f0dder.

I think the adult human sized Cody isn't going to be that popular. the problem, as I discussed with mouser, is that the DC forum banners indicate that Cody is the same size as the white figures - so either Cody does appear to change size depending on the picture - or I need to change the perspective of the figures and Cody so that they are all the same size but only about 12 inches tall - yes, the people will be small also.

I'd like to know how tall everyone thinks Cody is, as it will help me do some DC/Cody things I'm doing - or I may just ignore the result if Cody tells me to.

as suggested by mouser, here are a few work-in-progress wallpapers that have different sizes of Cody in them. (I will upload the finished versions, and more besides, when the size issue has been resolved.)

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: drag window to edge automatically resizes it
« Last post by nudone on September 01, 2006, 01:15 AM »
kproth has mentioned something important regarding the problem with the minimise shortcut.

the hotkeys that i made myself where originally things like 'winkey+delete' or 'winkey+pageup' as I knew that they wouldn't conflict with other programs hotkeys. but it annoyed me that I'd have to use both hands to use these hotkeys (I always forget that there is a winkey on the right hand side of the keyboard which I could have used), so I changed the hotkeys so that I could easily use them with my left hand.

I mention this as if it takes more than one manoeuvre to perform a hotkey function then it's not really that nice to use - this is exactly why I don't use the 'alt+space'... 'n' combination that is built into windows (and I can never remember 'n' means minimise).

unfortunately, gridmove is replicating this inbuilt windows hotkey combo and the truth is that I wouldn't have used it - I didn't want to sound ungrateful by saying I wouldn't use that feature so I suggested that it could be speeded up instead.

the hotkey combo's for selecting grid zones makes perfect sense as we need to see the grid layout before selecting a number. there just isn't really any great need to see the grid when minimising, maximising, etc. so a single hotkey hit would be preferred for these actions.

could you not just make it so that gridmove has the hotkeys for minimise, maximise, on top, 50% transparency and rollup by using shortcut keys like winkey+userdefinedkey. I know this is transforming what gridmove does but it makes sense to me to have other window control features as part of the program - providing they are as simple to use as lots of programs out there already that do these windows tasks.

I admit that these are luxuries rather than necessities and it probably is better using a dedicated window control program - the thing I use also allows a window to be moved around the screen a few pixels at a time by using the keyboard, so I could also add that to the request list of gridmove hotkeys.

anyway, I'll be happy with gridmove however you decide to transform it, jgpaiva.

brilliant.

the help file is extremely well done and it's good to see some more hotkeys added to the program.

can I just make a quick suggestion - I love the idea of hotkeys for minimising and restoring windows (I've had autohotkey scripts do this in the past) but can you please change the way the '0' is used to minimise a window. the problem is that there is rather a long pause after the '0' is pressed and the minimise function takes place. I'd be really grateful if you could change the hotkey so that it worked instantly - otherwise it's actually quicker for me to take my hand off the keyboard and use the mouse.

I can, of course, just continue to use the autohotkey script that I use for minimising windows instead.

anyway, it's great to see an update for gridmove. I've not tried the over 10 grid zone quick keys yet but I'm sure I will - I think there might be a new grid layout that might just be right for it.

i think/hope that urlwolf will be making a post soon about 'ToDoList' http://www.codeproje.../tools/ToDoList2.asp and the way it might be customised to fit in with what we are doing here. when he does i am expecting that we will not really need MLO.

from the sciral website - free calendars http://www.sciral.com/free/

the full year one has a slightly different layout to what i've seen elsewhere on the net.

instead, you could use a spreadsheet and a bit of messing about - okay, so it wouldn't be so easy to manipulate.

it makes we wonder if it might be worth trying to use a spreadsheet system during the GTD experiment.
2816
well said, mouser.

welcome aboard, Jimdoria.

i don't think there will be need to take sides as we'll be sharing our experiences and techniques so there will be overlap between the well defined systems.

perhaps it needs to be stressed that the system that 'works' is the one that becomes just another habit in your life - after a few weeks/months the system ought to be second nature - the most natural way of doing whatever task(s) you are going to do. a system that is too much trouble to even maintain after a few months is obviously going to fail.

but that is why we are here - to find a system that becomes automatic - well, that's what i'm striving for.

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / Re: New version of ToDoList released

sorry, app, i'm talking complete nonsense...

instead of you changing the program all that is required is that i place an indicator such as ** or // or whatever before the task to indicate it wasn't originally on the list.

sorry.

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / Re: New version of ToDoList released
« Last post by nudone on August 29, 2006, 05:33 AM »
app, thanks for making this little prog.

i've mentioned elsewhere on the forum that i've just read Mark Forster's book, Do It Tomorrow, and that he recommends using a closed 'will-do' list.

your little to-do list is pretty much the perfect thing for the method that he describes. the only thing missing, and this is why i make this request, is the ability to include 'unexpected' tasks to the list.

i'll explain his method...

each night you make a set 'closed' list of the things you will do the following day. the list should be realistic, i.e. you will be able to complete everything on it unless something really unexpected happens on the day.

it doesn't matter in which order you complete the tasks - the aim is simply to complete the full list (defining certain tasks as lower priority simply means you are less likely to do them).

any 'unexpected' tasks that arise that you really must get done that day are added to the list but set appart so that you can see they weren't in your original planned list - he recommends to put non planned tasks at the bottom of your list with a line separating them from your original plan (a different text colour would be enough i think).

the point of his method is that you are keeping control of what you are doing - you set yourself a realistic goal for the oncoming day and stick to it. any unforeseen tasks that you carry out on that day are added (but set appart) to your list so that you can see and monitor exactly where you lost control or managed to keep on top of everything.

his system is extremely simple and your minimalistic util is almost the perfect tool for the job.

it's just a suggestion.

thanks.

(just a quick edit: i realise now that the text colour difference wouldn't work as the text files wouldn't save this information - so, if you could a line or something would be good instead.)
2821
very true. i think we've discussed this before - or several of us held our hands up and admitted that we waste time trying to fix a problem that would have been quicker resolved to just get on with the task.

i think it might be useful to discuss these things during the GTD experiment as these sort of time wasting/saving acts are obviously a great source of procrastination, i.e. i won't finish that spreadsheet right now as i can write up a macro in less than 5 hours that will get the job done for me.

Mark Forster - Do It Tomorrow

amazon.com http://www.amazon.co...4445-6226413?ie=UTF8

amazon.co.uk http://www.amazon.co...=266239&v=glance

what do i like about his approach?

well, i've yet to put everything he says to the test as i don't have any 'real' deadlines to do anything (aren't i lucky). so, i've still got to 'embrace' the rules of the game.

anyway, the things i like about his approach...

don't use to-do lists setting yourself priority tasks - you'll never get around to doing the lowest priority tasks, especially if you just keep adding to the list as you wipe off your done tasks. simple and obvious. instead use a closed-list with a realistic set of tasks that can be done in a day. do all the tasks - doesn't matter what order you do them - just aim to complete them all.

categorise out of control procrastinated tasks/lists as a 'backlog' and separate it away from your daily 'will-do' list. he has recommendations of how to work on this 'backlog' but i'm not explaining everything here.

work on 'batches' of tasks.

new/important projects and tasks should be acted upon first thing each day - before you allow yourself to start inventing other jobs to do.

it helps to work on longer projects by using shorter bursts of activity but on a regular basis - this keeps the project alive.

he also recommends using a method of tricking oneself into getting a task done or, more precisely, into tricking oneself to start a task you seem to keep avoiding. this is done by litterally telling yourself that you aren't really going to do the task but instead you will just perform the very first step of whatever the task may be, eg. don't want to mow the lawn but know you really must - tell yourself you are just going to look in the shed or maybe just clean the lawn mover - you'll often find yourself automatically carrying on with the full task once you've done the pretend start task.

no doubt all of this will sound all too obvious or blindingly simple - and so it should. the book expands on the points i've briefly outlined as well as describing others. i'm sure you'll find similar ideas by other authors on the web and in print. Mark Forster just seems to be someone that has tried the GTD system, realised it didn't work as well as it could and has changed bits of it so that now his version just sounds like common sense, i.e. why would anyone do it any other way.

now, i'm sure that many, or even all, of the self-motivation systems work if you have the discipline to follow them exactly as their rules set out. the problem is that some of these systems are less realistic than others - if you are a super disciplined kind of person then you'll succeed whichever path you follow - if you are not so super, then i think following a system that realises you are always going to be fallible and makes you aware of the limitations you'll encounter is a better one to buy into - GED, or Get EVERYTHING Done by Forster appears to be that system. the crucial thing to be aware of is what the EVERYTHING is for you - of course.

do i think he has the 'complete' system? maybe - for some people. but i'm sure the original version of GTD is perfect for some people. i don't think any system answers everything and i'm sure we'll find many novel and workable suggestions by the people who are going to participate in the DC GTD experiment.

 8) the future's so bright i have to wear shades.
2823
nice idea. should be relatively simple to implement with autohotkey i would think but i'm not the person to do it.

check out skrommel's 'pixelnotifier' autohotkey script to see a cut down version of what you are asking for. here's the link and scroll down the page https://www.donation...0;topicseen#msg34726

you could perhaps achieve the same results by using a program that monitors an applications cpu usage - i've got one somewhere but i can't remember the name of it at the moment.

(welcome to the forum by the way.)
2824
i've finished reading Mark Forster's most recent book 'Do It Tomorrow'. like urlwolf, i will now recommend it to anyone looking for guidance on how to manage their time better - especially if you have tried the GTD system in the past and not managed to stick at it.

i'm sure we'll be able to discuss the techniques found in the book over the oncoming weeks but i really don't think it fair to recite the words of Mr. Forster in detail here - it's more correct if his books are bought by anyone wishing to know more.

i will start to implement the Forster technique tomorrow - maybe only in a half-hearted way to serve as a warm up for the real DC GTD experiment kick-off.

anyway, i find myself unable to criticise anything that he has to say in the book - every bit of scepticism i had has gone and i'm looking forward to being fully productive from now on - and if i'm not i won't feel bad about it.

nod32 has improved a lot but it's still a toy, i only trust kaspersky.

download esan here:
http://www.spywarein...dk/download/mwav.exe

then run kavupd.exe to update the sig, it will catch everything.

i'd love to be able to put kasperspy to the test on this one but i've deleted the files that were infected - i ought to have saved them somewhere perhaps.
