FeedStation only works within FeedDemon, which requires registration. It works fine inside of it, though. WinAmp is so easy that it might be preferred for many.

Thanks Redhat! I had the same response with Ashampoo and found it too aggressive. Total Uninstall has worked really well for me. It's a lifesaver.

Cool! I'm ready for that talking computer in Star Trek, or better, just implant Data's brain in my skull!

eWeek has a site dedicated to Google. And of course it's called GoogleWatch, what else? Some interesting things there if you use gmail a lot.

General Software Discussion / Will 64-bit make a difference?
« Last post by zridling on April 28, 2006, 05:03 PM »
64-bit operating systems, 64-bit hardware, 64-bit software. How long before everything's just as slow as 32-bit?
(Yea, I'm directing that snide to Adobe and anyone else who can bring a fully-loaded 4G RAM system to a crawl. Seems like programmers consume whatever hardware resources is given to them, no matter how much it is. Much like my old mom does her house.)

Thanks guys, I'll keep working on it. I'm sure something will happen and it will work!

It renamed it in the preview window, but not in the folder. If I undo it, and re-"Start" the renaming process, and it does nothing despite all files being "X". And that's both in Expert and Basic modes. I'm running version 1.56.0 and even downloaded it again to make sure I had the latest.

(Got to sleep now — 6a here — and am tired.) Thanks kimmchii.

General Software Discussion / Desperately seeking help with 1-4a Rename
« Last post by zridling on April 26, 2006, 04:41 AM »
Due to life's many inconveniences, I'm just starting on the File Renamer review, and right off the bat, I'm completely stumped by 1-4a Rename. Despite the tooltips, examples, and How Does This Work pages, I still can't make 1-4a Rename do anything I want. I'm EXTREMELY confused by the interface after working with it for almost two hours. It X's files, and then it doesn't. It won't preview parts of names, and despite examples using $$ everywhere, it shows nothing. I need a Help File, otherwise I'm just going by first impressions, and if the program is too difficult to begin to figure out after an hour, then I ain't going to bother much longer.

Am I stupid? No.
Slow? Oh hell yes.

I wrote to the author, but the only email link on his site that worked was his comment link. If you're a fan of this program, help me out; leave a response, or send me an email on how to get started. The author's 'Typical Problems' and 'Examples' pages are so numerous and lengthy that the several I tried were no help.

I object, too. AutoHotkey deserves the money because it is actively developed and it's a program even dummies like me can figure out. Let those who love AutoIT donate directly to it, or start a separate fund.

I haven't, but my vote goes to Cherry Cordial Hershey's Kisses (sold around the holidays) — they're fantastic.

XMinus1, I hope you consider a newsreader review! I considered it late last year, but after a little research, learned that much of it was over my head. I've always loved Xnews, but with Newzbin, I've become a NewsLeecher man. The one thing I absolutely hate about NewsLeecher is its lack of a help file. The workflow of XNews seems so much faster.

Count me in. I completely ditched and deleted Firefox for Opera 9. Not because it's free, but because it's just... so damn good.

I visit several times a week. The recent AutoHotkey feature was something I'd been doing for that last couple of years. I should submit a hack on how to live like a bum and get away with it....

Saturday Night Live did a similar spoof, but this one is so much funnier. Great find.

I meant to say that new isn't always better, but with technology it often is. For example, given the way cars are built, I'd take a 2006 Volvo over '67 Ford Mustang any day. (The Mustang doesn't have a built-in calculator on the back side of the window visor.)

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Tweak Tool?

Oh, and yes, I HATE IT WHEN A BROWSER OR FORUM TRASHES MY POST! I can't tell you how many times I've written something so eloquent and pithy only to see it evaporate into digital air. I now compose anything more than three lines in UltraEdit and then copy and paste after taking that hammer upside the head one too many times.

...TuneUp Utilities 2006 as well. Most of you must have heard of it before. While it's great for what it does, it's pretty obvious its target user audience are clueless computer users who find themselves right at home with the pretty colors and nice icons and the easy interface. It's Windows tweaking--the Fisherprice way.

Tia, you totally dissed TuneUp Utilities!
  — Of course it's pretty.
  — Of course you have to click-thru too many screens.
  — Of course it's overpriced.
  — Of course some of its features are miscategorized.
But it works, and that's what I care about. TuneUp's Registry cleaner is also one of the safest around. TuneUp also lets you control Explorer in ways few other tweaking tool allow. The best asset of TuneUp Utilities is that it's easy to find things. Unlike X-Setup Pro, which is mainly a telephone book-list of tweaks, I can navigate to something quickly. I won't say Tuneup is the best. Never. Check out XP Smoker Pro. I think you might like its raw power.

I'm with Carol in showing my age. When I was teen and Pong came out, it was incredible; couldn't believe you could interact with a TV that way. (We didn't have to money to buy one, but the lone rich kid in the neighborhood did.) Later on, when I was too old for it all, it was Ms. Pac Man, of course! I don't have time for games now, but I DO tape and watch X-Play every day.

Having removed both desktop search apps I had installed on my system, I've come to rely on Veign's Seeker to find stray or lost files. It's fast, easy, and leaves my computer alone when I'm not using it.

I see the end of a interesting doctoral dissertation. Interesting, for a change! The relationship between coder and donator is obviously symbiotic when reconceived using this idea. I can't code, but I can donate. Others can code, and if they contribute, they can find reward through donationware, not merely monetarily, but through persistent feedback on every level from newbie to programmer.

Silly question:
Except for examining pixels, what does one use a magnifier for? Curious because I can't think of a use.
