Nice post.. I actually explored Log Parser (quite powerful database driven tool) while writing my own recent "Web Log Filter".

i dont remember if i played that on our 2600 - but if i did i may have blocked out the memory - damn that looks boring.  pitfall harry - now that was *the* atari 2600 game.  I remember when activision started making carts for the atari - i wonder if that was one of the very first example of successfull 3rd party cartridge developers.  It was exciting times when Activision started making games - they had a real quality to them.

I think this would be a GREAT thing for someone to write a tutorial on, using open source projects.
In other words "How to Set up a Suite of Web/Lan Services to Coordinate Family Coordination"

Living Room / Re: moving operating system from one partition to another?
« Last post by mouser on January 19, 2007, 09:08 AM »
personally i would rather install fresh than do this.
there are going to be registry entries and ini config file issues, and perhaps some license issues that trigger when you do this.

there are special programs for migrating stuff like this, but they aren't perfect, and for peace of mind i would avoid it if at all possible.  just my 2 cents - i've never actually suffered from this myself im just reporting what my understanding is.

in general, png is almost always best for screenshots - it's lossless like bmp but compressed (bmps can get huge).
jpg is good for photographs but not so good for things like screenshots.

All hardcore dc users need to know about Mobysaurus's Pop-up Cody Notifier, but it's really not something that casual forum readers are going to want to leave running on their pc.  So we need to make a nice page for it and make sure all regular forum readers find out about it.  Maybe a link on the forum somewhere.  And put it on the RSS info page.

i think we are thinking very much alike - it's just in my implementation, the first time you hit escape it brings you to the edit box (assuming you arent there already).  If you hit escape from within the edit box, it does exactly as you say and highlights the existing search so that you can type a new one.  And if you hit escape while the existing text is highlighted then it closes the window.  I find this pretty natural but i'm willing to make escape highlight the complete text right away (the extra step makes it a little easier to hit escape to interrupt a search and ADD terms).  So basically escape operates in stages, always canceling current operation and putting you back a step.

Babis, you still need to get your self an improved screenshot tool which takes png images which wont have all that noise you see in your imags.  I still recommend my own Screenshot Captor (visit web page here).

as Deozaan says, you have to vote in a poll before you are allowed to see results of other voters.

Yep - we love doing experiments here and trying different things so it will be fun if we can figure out alternatives.

For sure we will be bringing back my "Cody Quotes" thing which displays a random comment about DonationCoder (some of which can be funny and even a couple angry ones).
Screenshot - 1_19_2007 , 12_44_37 AM.png

But I definitely want to mix those up in the future with similarly sized little thumbnail images /blurbs/ links to different sections and software on the site - so that these things can act to bring people to various other pages on the site, and also mix in items that might give a little blurb and link to member sites, and some fun "Join DonationCoder" items.  Hopefully we can mix it up and keep it fun so that our visitors get a taste of the spirit of our site.  And i just love the idea that we will be doing our own thing rather than "promoting" ads for things we have no knowledge of.  I think it will also be beneficial for the site in being able to highlight different areas of the site that people often overlook.

General Software Discussion / Re: Are any icon editor & manager decent priced?
« Last post by mouser on January 19, 2007, 12:33 AM »
I've contacted two different companies ( not the icon ones) about expired s/w explaining that I was associated with DC and how I wanted to use the product and why I chose them over the competition. ... Try the links on DC first and see if they still work.  If not, just write and ask if they will still honor the offer.  Can't hurt

This is really great advice and i can't emphasize enough how important it is.  Farmsteader's advice is spot on.  Tell them about the discount you missed out on, tell them you aren't swimming in money (definitely mention if you are a student), tell them you prefer their product after investigating the competition, and ask them if they would be willing to extend the discount to you.

Many people don't realize that companies are very very frequently willing to do this - it's almost rare for them not to.  It also will give you some insight into the nature of the company.  If you don't get a response from your inquiry, or you get a response from someone who says flat out we don't do that - then you have some additional info to the way the company works.  You might even get a friendly personal response from the author of a small program which increases your respect and appreciation for the company+author.

Just a confirmation: By monday all google ads will be removed from the site, and like the ground hog will not be showing their face again for at least another year.  Good riddance.

We are going to try to do something where supporting members can make a little banner or link to their own projects which will get shown occasionally - i think it might be something fun and different.

I've actually learned a little from your script - even though i've been using Inno for a couple years i've never used #defines and some of the variables - that would definitely make my scripts easier to reuse, thanks.

better:

If you install the excellent free shredding tool called Eraser (http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/), it adds an option to the Recycle Bin right click context menu that will shred the contents of your recycle bin.  Too bad it doesn't work on individual files inside the recycle bin because i think this is a very smart request by Fancypants, but it comes close in terms of use.

Fancy - might i suggest that you email the author of Eraser and suggest he add this functionality - it seems to me a very good idea.  And let us know what he (or she) says!

Considering that HamRadio's review is the most comprehensive and useful review of icon editors ever to come into existence in this universe, I think lanux's advice is probably worth listening to  :P

It's too bad you missed the November discounts we had on all of the tools.. I don't suppose any of those discounts are still alive past their planned expiration date?

dclagoa's icon has been added to the latest version (not uploaded yet).  I debated with myself whether i should have just let user load any icon from file.. perhaps i should have gone that way but right now user can just choose from build in list.

i don't know about quiet but carol bought a nice that uses slots that i like - in which cas you would put your own hard drive inside it - and would buy yourself a quiet drive (vs one of those super fast noisy ones).

in general it seems to me that my external hard drives are quieter than any drives in my pc - not sure why.

For a more philosophical journey into gri's world see this donationcoder post:
https://www.donation...index.php?topic=6927

personally I find gri's world to be interesting, like visiting an alien planet.

I wonder if this might be a good time to remind people that from their forum profile they can mark certain forum sections to "ignore" which basically makes them invisible to you.  So if you don't care about the simplemachines forum software you could always ignore this forum section.

note that i'm not sanctioning gri's posts or saying that they make total sense - i'm just posting because i know the gri isn't simply spamming stuff - he's trying to communicate in his own way.

i think the options are all there that you are asking for..

the "jump" puts the directory of the item in the farr built in text edit field.
the others launch your file browser or copy item path.
