More or less the same problem, and a solution, were mentioned in TinyApps Blog
http://tinyapps.org/..._drop_plus_plus.html

Sanity check: DROP++ is written in compiled AutoIt, so you would need to check whether it will run on Win98.

Question about drag & drop with auto incrementing of filenames #
Is there a method for dragging and dropping a list of files with the same name into a new folder and have them automatically increment the filenames rather than give an overwrite warning? Two instances where I've seen this work: when dragging files from a search result window into Nero (screenshot) and when dragging email messages from Outlook Express into Explorer. I'm not looking for a renamer to change the original filenames, but rather a way to create new files with incremented names. Answers sent to "mail AT tinyapps DOT org" will be appended to this post.

UPDATE: Jorg Kliemann has kindly crafted a solution.

DROP++
Jorg Kliemann has generously crafted DROP++ (source available here) using AutoIt (itself a mostly open source project) to address the drag & drop overwrite problem mentioned recently. Simply drag and drop a group of files from search results or any other Explorer window onto its icon; DROP++ will copy the files and autoincrement the resulting filenames. If you're tired of seeing "Confirm File Replace - This folder already contains a file named foo. Would you like to replace the existing file with this one?", give DROP++ a try. (By the way, holding Shift while clicking No to the above dialog behaves like "No to All", which is otherwise not provided.)

rjbull maybe you need to drop him a line and tell him to stop by and contribute to the notetaking thread

I e-mailed him in August 2004 with some thoughts on his page, mainly programs he hadn't included.  He sent me a courteous reply but never updated it.  I'd be surprised if he feels he has the time to get involved here...

Interesting idea, but I'd be more interested if it there were a more UK-centred version.  On the other hand, we do have the BookBarn.

I see BookMooch is a brainchild of the John Buckman, who wrote the best but now very out of date group review of outliners/notekeepers.

Here is the link you are looking for...

https://www.donation...88.msg28858#msg28858

It is part of the thread of interesting links by Thunder7.

Ampa

THAT'S THE ONE!!!    ;D

Ampa,

How did you find/remember it?  I couldn't use just the word "cancel" because it threw up far too many hits.  I see the post didn't contain any of the other words I tried, so no wonder search didn't find it.

you can also use google search:

site:www.donationcoder.com "cancel subscriptions"
or
site:www.donationcoder.com cancel subscriptions

there is no such post.

There may not be such a post now, but there was once.  True, I can't remember the exact form of words.  But if the post was deleted, it won't be there for Google to search, and may have disappeared from Google's cache.

Nobody could expect CarolHaynes to go through her post list one by one - not with 2482 posts and counting...   :o

<Later edit>

kimmchi,

Tried Google search again with keywords that did appear in the original post, and it found it OK.  Good idea, thanks.  The problem is remembering the right keywords...

I remembered an illuminating post by the magisterial CarolHaynes on how to cancel subscriptions from companies that make cancellation excessively difficult.  I didn't seem to have a local copy, so I went looking for it using DC's search feature.  I couldn't find it, despite a fairly determined attempt.  CarolHaynes remembers the message herself but also couldn't find it, and  points out that she thinks SMF has been occasionally losing messages.  Obviously searching wouldn't turn up a message that was no longer in existence.

So...  has anyone else seen this problem?  The search facility may not be very good, but it should have turned up something.  Has anyone else found that posts they know they made have quietly disappeared?

I am interested in some sort of clipboard "Manager" that also saves txt notes

If that's all you want, try the free version of ClipCache (1.41).  A copy can be found at http://www.woundedmo.../win32_freeware.html

The latest, shareware version is at http://www.xrayz.co.uk/

This isn't a complete solution (rather a lot of assembly required)  but you might try looking at LOGMON.  It's been mentioned in these two DC threads:

DONE: Backup My TXT Files Everytime I Save - AKA incremental saves / wiki(-like)

Re: Recommend directory tracker?
https://www.donation...99.msg10742#msg10742

I don't think it e-mails you directly, but as it can execute an external program, you could use something like the command-line e-mailer BLAT to send a list of changed files or whatever.

[edit]
Both LOGMON and BLAT are free.

In the "Advanced" tab, I have only the first option checked - you too?

I haven't got anything ticked in "Advanced"...

But why are you using an old beta? I use 2.99.6.7240.

Looks like that might be the reason.  Installed 6.7240; multiple wildcard searches work now.  Many thanks!  :)

Update: Searches like *URL.txt;*lol*.jpg work in the latest beta now!

I must have misread that.  I thought you meant that it would search for both *URL.txt and *lol*.jpg at the same time.  It doesn't seem to, using Version 3.0 beta 5.10100.  Is that correct?

Addnote.exe is basically a commandline tool for adding notes to top or bottom of a text file with a date stamp.

Horst Scaheffer's LOGECHO in his PBATS collection;

LOGECHO - custom entries for logfiles, with enhanced date handling

LOGECHO 2.2 (c) 1997 Horst Schaeffer

Plasma Man,

Shouldn't you be looking at the ScrapBook plug-in for FF?  Or, as alternatives, NetSnippets, Evernote or Surfulater, the first two of these having completely free versions, and all mentioned (frequently) elsewhere on DC, notably the General brainstorming for Note-taking software thread?  I see you've posted there, but it's an awful long thread to work through.

You can also add abbreviations of commonly used words that it will then fill in, e.g. if I type "Su" it replaces it with "the Sun".

I would love to see an extension to the Thunderbird email program that offered the same functionality.
-HankFriedman (July 17, 2006, 12:18 AM)

HankFriedman,

If you're interested in abbreviation expanders, take a look at these three DonationCoder threads:

Instant Text V Pro - more than the usual features of a text expander

DONE: abbreviations importer

Word AutoCompleter

Most of the programs listed are not are quite spelling checkers/correctors, but you might take a look at Mouser's Clipboard Help & Spell.  I personally use The Bat! as e-mail client.  It has a spelling checker built in, and is excellent value for money if you accept the DonationCoder special offer to members  :)

I keep jumping from specialist programs (e.g. the elegant but expensive Notemap (http://www.casesoft.com/notemap/) for outlining, the well-designed Notesholder (http://notes.aklabs.com/) for on-the-fly notetaking) back to all-in-ones.

Big difference in price.  Notesholder looks a bit like an alternative "sticky notes" program.

I waste too much time trying out programs, and not long enough making the most of them.

There should be a club tie   ;)

I currently have a self-imposed ban on trying new note-taking/data capture programs

I wonder how long that will last  :D

Thanks for your comments w.r.t. UltraRecall.  I think it got briefly mentioned far back in this thread.

I've been asked to play Santa Claus so many times, I've even developed a standup comedy routine as Santa when I do it.

zridling,

A couple of years back, one of the big British daily newspapers pointed out that you could tell what stage a man had reached in the four ages of life, by looking at his position relative to Santa Claus.  Thus:

  • You believe in Santa Claus.
  • You don't believe in Santa Claus.
  • You are Santa Claus.
  • You look like Santa Claus...

johnk,

Having said all that, the program I am using more than any other in recent months has taken me by surprise — because I didn't install it either as a notetaker or as a data capture tool. It's Clipcache, one of many clipboard enhancers.

I registered ClipCache mostly as a "thank you" to the author, but I've never bothered to install the shareware version because the last freeware one (available e.g. from http://www.woundedmo.../win32_freeware.html) did all I wanted as a clipboard enhancer.  Perhaps it's time to look at the newer versions.  Clipcache has been mentioned on DC before, e.g. this thread
ClipCache Plus 3.xx Preview...Don't Get Too Excited
where the OP (the currently very quiet Nighted) was distinctly underwhelmed.

Lately I've been using NetSnippets for Web capture, because it can hold Web pages complete, or in part.  You can add to them and you can organise them.  Unfortunately, at work, I can only use it with IE.  I prefer Firefox, but I can't install any Firefox plug-ins.  I think they're blocked by corporate IT policies (I have no problem at home).  However, superboyac's main focus for this thread is note-keeping applications with the accent on text, and that's my main interest, and evidently yours too:

currently I am a big fan of both Ultra Recall (http://www.ultrarecall.com/) and nevf's excellent Surfulater. Both good in very different ways.

I'd be interested in how you compare them with the other two of superboyac's Big Three, MyBase and Evernote?

I've tried Screen Desktop OCR... it seems like a Kleptomania clone to me.  There are about 3-4 programs that claim to do the same thing and do it almost exactly the same way!  (Even down to the program icon...

I was astonished to see the same icon.  Dog should not eat dog.

I like ABBYY's claim to be able to use a digital camera as a scanner, that's awesome... but the price tag is, needless to say, pricey!

Eye-watering   :(

Going to take up kimmchi's offer to see if ABBYY will read a typical image?

<later edit>        TopOCR: yes, you're right, with "camera as scanner" apparently the main purpose of the program.

Digital Camera OCR

Can your camera or smartphone replace a scanner for document capture with OCR? The answer is a resounding YES! TopSoft, Ltd, a leading developer of OCR and image processing software has created an application specifically for OCR data capture with digital cameras and smartphones called TopOCR.

I notice both Kleptomania and ScreenOCR are about 400Kb to download.  TopOCR is ten times that, about 5.4Mb.  "Shareware" in that it only runs ten times rather than {x number of days} before needing registration.

However, I have less personal need of image-reading than of things like extracing bits of Outlook message headings lists, and I imagine Kleptomania and ScreenOCR would do that adequately.
