General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Privacy Concerns
« Last post by Deozaan on August 04, 2015, 04:00 PM »
I found some answers, my concerns are allayed:

I'm concerned about sharing Wi‑Fi networks. Can you tell me a little more?
Whether you choose to share password-protected Wi‑Fi networks with your contacts to give them Internet access is completely up to you. Here are some important things to know and consider:

  • [...]
  • When you share network access, your contacts get Internet access only. For example, if you share your home Wi‑Fi network, your contacts won't have access to other computers, devices, or files stored on your home network. If you have a small business that has intranet sites, your contacts won’t be able to access them.
  • [...]
  • You share with your contacts, but not their contacts. The networks you share aren't shared with your contacts' contacts. If your contacts want to share one of your networks with their contacts, they'd need to know your actual password and type it in to share the network.
  • [...]

How can I prevent someone from sharing my Wi‑Fi network password if I decide to manually enter it on their PC?

If you decide to manually enter your password on someone's PC instead of sharing access through Wi‑Fi Sense, make sure they can't see what you're typing when you enter it, and then make sure that the Share network with my contacts check box is cleared before you select Connect.

I also just tried to enable WiFi Sense for my network and it is asking me to re-type in my password to enable it. So if someone doesn't know my password, they can't share it, even if the password has been entered on their device in the past.

So now I'm OK-ish with the feature. I still wish there was a way to allow only a select group of people from my contacts access to my networks, rather than a blanket "everybody in my contacts" but now at least I could feel comfortable about enabling it temporarily when guests arrive and then disabling it when guests leave if I had to.

One thing I'm still unclear on is whether or not WiFi Sense will recursively share your WiFi AP info with your friends and their friends and their friends, etc.
...

Just found this:

http://www.zdnet.com...not-a-security-risk/
Windows 10's Wi-Fi Sense is not a security risk. Here's why

Yesterday, tech sites went full Chicken Little over a Windows 10 feature that allows you to share your wireless connection without having to give away your Wi-Fi password. If only those alarmists had actually used the feature first...

YMMV

That article doesn't answer my question(s). All it does is tell the obvious, simple truth that sharing networks is opt-in.

My main concern is this: If I had a guest over, whom I trust enough to give them access to my internet without telling them my password (by me manually typing in my WiFi password on their device for them), what's to stop them from sharing my network with all their contacts?

In other words, yes, network sharing is opt-in, but anyone who has ever had the password typed into their device can opt-in for you. And AFAIK there is nothing in the feature that allows the actual owner of the router--you know, the one who is paying for internet service--to know that the network is being shared. Basically the only thing you can do if you have ever given your SSID password out to anybody is to change your password and never share it again.

My other concern is: If I share my network with Outlook, Skype, and Facebook contacts, and those contacts get access to my network, are they then able to also share my network with their contacts? It seems like the answer is no, but I haven't seen anything officially addressing that question.

EDIT: I just found this in the comments below the article:

This assumes that you, and only you, have that password. fine if you only share your wifi with windows wifi sense users, and fine if they all have un-compromised machines and no custom wifi drivers.

All you need is one goof of a friend who upgraded to windows 10 after you let them use your wifi and you've got the potential for an unknown number of people to get hands-on access to that data (encrypted or not, a custom driver and its not anymore).
That's the thing. The secondary sharing is completely out of your control and VERY easy.
an opt-in on the WIFI itself would be more secure.
key is here: "For every network you join, you'll be asked if you want to share it with your friends/social networks."

EVERY NETWORK YOU JOIN.

not "every network you OWN"

simple start would be to enable a 'group' in your contacts that your wifi is shared with. I know my contact book has a few friends, a few enemies and a zillion busyness contacts.

I think DRM was kind of a requirement to be able to play anything from sites from Netflix or similar sites.

But yeah, it seems pretty fishy. But we can't claim they're taking the money and running away with it since they're refunding everyone. Good on them for at least making it right with the backers.

It's kind of troubling, actually. Say you don't like the idea of sharing your AP with ALL of your contacts, so you turn that feature off. That means that when your friends/family comes over and want to use the WiFi, you have to enter the password on their system. Now, you can do that without telling them what the password is, but now the password is shared on their device, and if they have a Windows 10 device, and they share their WiFi connections with WiFi Sense, now all your friend's friends (Outlook.com, Skype, or Facebook contacts) can access your WiFi.

All without your knowledge or your permission.

I think Win 10 all over is ugly, and the least ugly part is the ugly taskbar notification area!  :-[

I have no idea why yours looks so bad. Mine looks nice and neat, just like it always has:

One thing to keep in mind about Windows 7.  It is out of mainstream support right now, in the extended support period.
ugh i hate this about ms.

I think it's unfair to expect Microsoft to support old software.

They're still releasing security updates. But they're not going to be adding new features. I don't find that unreasonable, especially since they consider Windows 7 to be two "generations" old at this point.

Did you check and see if Mint has identified any 3rd party drivers it can load?

When I open up the Driver Manager (with Ethernet cable plugged in) it just says "No proprietary drivers are in use."

I went looking on Archive.org and it didn't have anything useful. But I also looked with archive.is and it seems to have links:

https://archive.is/MEFpY

I think it has something to do with adblock/scriptblockers. The content is there. But if your browser won't let the Javascript load it in (is that still being called AJAX?) it will just say "currently unavailable" and be totally unhelpful.

I have a feature request: Ignore all topics (current & future) started by a certain user.

I think we've gone down that route before (the asking) and his response (and a good one) was that sort of thing leads to the fragmentation of the community.  But maybe his opinion has changed.
* wraith808 shrugs

I'm never going to read or respond to them anyway, so I don't see how that's any different for the "ignored" user, but it certainly makes my life a lot more convenient.

At the moment, it's just one (or several) more box(es) I have to select when I'm marking selected topics as read.

Here are the results:

Live USB of Mint 17.1 XFCE has working WiFi.

Live USB of Mint 17.2 MATE... does too! Though, I'm about 5-10 feet from the router and my signal is only at 15%...

So now what? I just wait for the official 17.2 XFCE image and reinstall Mint?
2786
If you don't mind trying some other distribution's live cds, perhaps that might give some hints too.

That's a good idea. I'll make a live USB of Mint 17.2 and see if my WiFi works there. If not, try 17.1 etc., and go back until I find one that works.

The only problem with this idea is that there still aren't any disc images available for Mint 17.2 XFCE...

Mint 13 on a decent Lenovo laptop. Wifi dropped connections so often I am only able to use it reliably wired. I posted here about it a couple of years ago (googling 'Mint or other distro wifi not working' was/is a very good indication of the prevalence of Linux and Wifi issues).  The reason I am posting this is I am pretty certain going back version (major ones at least) is probably the wrong way.

I know it worked in 17 and when I first upgraded to 17.1. But somewhere between 17.1 and 17.2 my WiFi stopped working.

It has nothing to do with dropped connections. The Wireless connections thing in the panel is completely gone. I can't even attempt to connect to wireless SSIDs. It's like it doesn't recognize that I even have a wireless adapter in my netbook. It probably broke when I updated the kernel. But those things always confuse me because they warn that they're dangerous (level 5 updates), but they also say they're security updates, so I have just been installing them.

Anyone else experiencing apps opening (minimized to taskbar) when logging in from lock screen?

Haven't seen that one, but I have noticed that Edge can be a bit "shy" at times, and will periodically disappear only to show up again later minimized (all session tabs intact) in the task bar.

It's still happening for me. I come back from the lock screen and Xbox, Photos, and Calculator are open, but minimized.
 (see attachment in previous post)

So... now I know it's not a lock screen thing. I was just sitting here using my computer as normal (happened to be reading a web site, or possible distracted by my tablet momentarily) and these same three apps just opened on their own.

« Last post by Deozaan on August 01, 2015, 01:12 PM »
So, I read the article, and I still don't see what Chimpanzees have to do with the Start Menu.

Chimpanzees had nothing to do with the Start Menu. A guy who used to work with chimpanzees used his knowledge and experience in teaching things simply, one step at a time, to design what became the Start Menu.

General Software Discussion / Re: Question regarding Win10 upgrade
« Last post by Deozaan on August 01, 2015, 01:53 AM »
If the Reserve Windows 10 thing is still in his tray, there was a way to open it up and cancel the reservation.

Either way, the reservation itself says he can choose when to install/upgrade it. I didn't try it myself, but I was under the impression that meant you could delay the upgrade for as long as you wanted (within the first year) or cancel it altogether.

But now I'm on Windows 10 so I can't tell for sure what's possible once it says you can upgrade.
2793
May be you noticed already, but FWIW:

Yes. I did. Thanks!

Somehow my WiFi adapter broke in Mint. But I can't exactly blame the upgrade to 17.2 as it wasn't working when I booted up my netbook to install the update. But it had been a few weeks since I last ran Mint on that machine, so I'm not sure what I did or what changed since the last time I used it to break the WiFi adapter.

The update worked (when I plugged in the ethernet cable) without any other issues but WiFi is still broken for reasons which are unclear to me. I know it's not a hardware issue because the WiFi works just fine on the same machine in Windows 10.

I don't see the Win10 live tile screen, probably because I use Classic Shell. But when I tried to drop a desktop icon on the Start menu, it popped up. I just had to click on the desktop to get rid of it and everything was normal again, but it still seems to be there, hidden by Classic Shell.

There is no live tile screen in Win10. Now it's just the Start Menu that shows a few Live Tiles.

Why?

Because some people can't tell the difference between IM and texting in apps that handle both.

Here's some exercises for tendonitis - disclaimer: I dont know will these help you if your tendons are seriously damaged:

Lifehacker ... have this video embedded
Video podcast - exercises for tendonitis and carpal tunnel which they better describe as "Use exercises to ward off RSI" - they're very good exercises if you spend a lot of time at the keyboard and/or using the mouse -
it feels really good to stretch those tendons ;)

Some of those exercises were pretty uncomfortable (but not painful) for me to do. I must be out of shape! ;)

I keep seeing the Photos, Calculator, and Xbox apps opened up when I resume. I think I've also seen Calendar and maybe Mail, too. It's as if they open up to update for live tiles but they don't close back down again. Then again, I'm not sure why Calculator would need to update for a Live Tile thingy, so maybe that has nothing to do with it.

I ran into an interesting annoyance with the combination of Office 2013 and Windows 10 today. Normally I keep Outlook running but minimized so I can see the popup -(was a balloon from the tray, but in 2013 is a slide out in the top right corner)- notice of incoming mail that showed the sender, subject line, and (space permitting) a snippet of the body content.

With the new 13/10 combination, these messages are relegated to the 'Action Center' exclusively so nothing shows when mail comes in...until I interrupt what I'm doing and manually click on the Action Center which then gives a list of (all the) newly arrived mail. Which IMO totally sucks, because I now have to leave Outlook visible just to see what came in to decide on its relevance.

Anybody know how to get the time saving balloons back?

In my experience, Windows 10 has a balloon/slider which shows for a second or two and then disappears to the Action Center where you can view it if you missed it.

Try Settings -> System -> Notifications & actions and see if you can enable notifications for Outlook somewhere in there.

@Deozaan:
And when a hack (buffer overflow) occurs in a machine with this type of memory...does that mean that the hack remains present until (that part of) the memory is actually overwritten?

I really don't know anything about this technology. I imagine it will be like traditional storage (HDD/SSD), but super fast like RAM. That is, no need to store things in memory temporarily. And things that are meant to be temporary will no longer have pointers pointing to them once they're no longer needed, much like deleting a file from your HDD doesn't actually erase it until you write to that sector. As far as the harddrive/memory cares it's just a random bit.

But again, I need to stress that I don't really know how RAM works, nor do I know how this new Xpoint memory stuff works.
