The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / i have the last laugh.
« Last post by nudone on September 05, 2006, 04:48 AM »
i mentioned before that i quit my job about two weeks ago - absolutely no regrets about it.

i've just received a phone call from the old 'boss' begging me to go back as they have too much work to do - ha, ha, ha - tough. i timed my resignation so that it would cause the most amount of trouble for them - i am so happy. ha, ha, ha.

thankfully, i won't even consider their request as i've got a full schedule with the new found motivation and energy i have discovered through the DC GTD experiment.

fantastic.

just found another 200 gig drive so it looks like i will be planning my backup strategy for when this happens again.

i'll try putting the 'bad' drive elsewhere but i can't see how ventilation can be a problem - there's an inch or two of clear space above and below the drive and, like i said before, there is a 120mm fan right in front of the drive sucking air in directly from the front of the case - the drive has been working perfectly up until this morning so it makes no sense to me.

regarding the RMA, are they likely to replace the drive - or will i have to spend a lot of time trying to convince them - i'd rather just sling the faulty drive and forget about it if i'm going to have to keep chasing things up.

Ooops sorry ...

i've had 3 different prog say the temparature was around 87 so i can't really blame the software. both samsung drives feel pretty cool to me - they aren't even warm.

so, the questions is now, do i chuck this 'bad' drive or continue to use it - is there anyway of getting it to stop reporting that it's too hot?

or should i just accept there is obviously something wrong with it and let my lump hammer look after it?

can anyone explain why this drive would be reading 87 degrees when an identical samsung drive is less than 2 inches away and only reads at 25 degrees. the bad drive isn't even used a great deal and there is a 120mm fan stuck right in front of both of these drives - which probably means why the good drive is only at 25 degrees C.

could the temperature reading be wrong? it really doesn't make much sense to me.

i think i've identified the disk. duh, should have just looked in computer management > storage > disk management.

so, now i'm even more annoyed - the bad disk is the newest one i've got - probably less than 6 months old. absolutely pathetic.

fantastic. i've glanced over it but will read properly later.

congratulations to superboyac - i can see that it must have been an ordeal to do.

great to see a major big review back again on DC too.

it appears to be one of my 'storage' drives where i keep everything. i've got two identical samsung 250 gig drives - one of which claims to be at 87 degrees C - which the drive monitoring utils i've tried doesn't like the look of.

the problem is now i don't know which samsung drive it is - i've got the serial number for the bad drive but i can't work out which drive that actually is.

help please!

i've managed to find a couple of old drives, so i've got about 180 gig of free space - should be enough for me to back the most important stuff - i hope.

what annoys me most of all is that the drive that is on it's way out can only be less than 9 months old. also, i've got fans inside the machine to cool them down a bit, so i really don't see why they should be playing up.

any recommendations on how to work out which drive it is - when i booted up it said channel 5 master is dodgy - there are four drives in the machine and i haven't a clue which is on channel 5. i mean without physically disconnecting the drives - i'd like to just see which is which whilst i'm using windows.

ha, ha, it's worse than i thought. just read the message again and it might be nothing to do with my raid 0 drives - it might be one of my drives that i use to store all my important files - i don't have room to transfer all these files elsewhere.

woke up this morning, turned computer on and up came a message:

"you are an idiot, you are using raid 0, something is about to fail, back up your data now."

(at least, that's the way i remember the message.)

great. this pc isn't even 12 months old and it's started acting stupid. oh well, time to start backing things up - start again and realise i forgot to back something up.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: drag window to edge automatically resizes it
« Last post by nudone on September 04, 2006, 02:32 PM »
could we not have a separate hotkey config file so that we could change the hotkeys to whatever we want?

i'd probably use something like winkey + downarrow, or some other combination i'm sure wouldn't be used with another program. but i'm also sure i'd change my mind and change it to another key combination at some point.

great, i really like the fast move hotkeys.

but couldn't we have had the combination winkey + 0 to minimise a window, as i see there is still a delay when using the control + g keys then hitting 0.

good suggestions about reusing stuff, app. i've been collecting scraps of paper that would otherwise be thrown away - they just get used again for notes and stuff so it seems crazy to keep buying brand new pads. you can, of course, reuse card boxes for file/folder containers - if the box it too big then just cut it down. if such things aren't the right pastel shade of whatever it's meant to be this month then you'll just have to pop down to Ikea and buy something instead.

your position isn't so unique app. i really, really don't have to do any of the tasks (or should i say projects) i've set myself - that's why they haven't been done. year after year goes by and it always seems that NEXT year will be the year i get things done.

so, what is the difference about this time around? probably that i've been made aware that most things don't get done because other impulse distractions take precedence. does it matter if i do or do not get these 'projects' done? not one jot - the universe won't notice either way. so why bother? i'll let you fill in your own raison d'ĂȘtre.

right, i'm now busy sorting out all the notebooks, scraps of paper and 'reminders' that i've been accumulating over the past ten to fifteen years. i ought to have done this yesterday to meet the deadline for having a clear mind and workspace but it was only this morning that a realised i really needed to break free from all these old 'to-do' lists and chuck most of them out - or, at the very least, put them in one place.

more importantly, i'd just like to say well done to everyone that has managed to complete the first assignment.

whether you found it a completely trivial thing to do or something that took all day and beyond (like me), the important thing is that you set yourself a task that was then completed. this is all we are really hoping to achieve - but with a greater number of successes than we would normally make.

deadlines like the one for the first assignment are there as a guide - you can, of course, create your own deadline(s) to meet. make it realistic and take it seriously. i didn't make the official deadline that mouser set, so i'm now playing catch-up and so i am even more determined to sort things out today.

one other thing i think worth mentioning (i can't remember if it has already be done) is that we will be trying to tackle different styles of procrastination. some of us will have a set amount of work that has been determined by outside forces (like your boss) and others (like me) will be inventing the work with no real penalty if it isn't completed - and there will be combinations.

i'm sure this means there will be plenty of tips and advice that seem completely irrelevant to your personal task problems. the question you will need to ask yourself is whether you are ignoring certain tips/advice that people make because it really will not benefit your situation or whether you are just blocking yourself from taking action and trying something new.

as you are here, taking part in this experiment, you will need to finally accept that you are perhaps wrong in the way you have been running things. yes, external factors will play a part and disrupt your plans but it is entirely your choice in how you react to them. reading a 'self-motivation' book is just entertainment - it changes nothing unless you admit what you have been doing doesn't work and that you actually have to put the ideas in the book into practise - EVERY DAY. if you've read about a new system then give it a few days trial, just as a bit of fun or do it just to prove that it doesn't work and that you really are an incurable procrastinator if that is how you want to define yourself.

i've got things to do so i'm off to do them...
2791
it is now Monday morning for me here. i've woken up an hour late (shouldn't really matter as i'm working from home but it really annoys me) and my eyeballs feel like they are too big for their sockets - a bit like a hangover and yet i've not consumed any alcohol.

i mention this as i was planning this to be the first day of hardcore efficiency and super motivation - but i feel like the complete opposite will be the order of the day now.

so, as one of the pseudo coaches for the experiment i am now declaring that i will have become fully motivated and on track within the next hour. i'll be setting myself a number of tasks for the day ahead - ALL of which i expect to be completed or, at least, attacked by the end of the day.

honestly, if i can snap out of this current thick head that i've got then the rest should be quite simple.

i agree.

not entirely sure why you want the separate databases but ACDSee will let you put image files to cd/dvd (might even let you do it to hard drive - probably not) whilst keeping a thumbnail of the images within the database. these 'remote' image files can then be viewed viewed from 'special' folders that just contain the thumb and a link to the saved out file.

or maybe you could try doing it with contact sheets.

rather than using separate databases you are meant to use the tagging facility to catagorise your files, but as i don't know what you are trying to achieve i can imagine this won't be of any help.

what is it exactly that you are wanting to do?
2794
right, done, sort of. can't decide on the special area yet - need to move the whole room around to be honest so my desk space is going to be wherever I sit - I'll let the final area choose me when it feels right kinda thing. finding a single area sounds a bit rigid for me - I appreciate that is probably the whole point of it though.

other than that, I've got loads of scrap paper, notepads, pencils and paper clips so I'm going for the lo-fi approach - I have an aversion to buy anything else at the moment.

nice review, urlwolf. i was thinking about gantt charts so i'm pleaseed to see that GanttProject can be used with ToDoList.  question is: will i now try using them? possibly...

Zaine's got the right idea. i can't wait for holodecks - but before all that i can't wait for an attractive looking robot to be made (gynoid), and a mass produced one at that so i can actually afford to buy it. yeah, i am serious.
2799
just letting you know, I haven't really done anything yet regarding the first assignment. I've got stuff lying around the place that I'm sure I can use but I'm waiting for the Sunday deadline to nearly run out - I'll have it done sometime then.

You see, if I can successfully complete this GTD experiment then absolutely anyone can.

Living Room / Re: how tall is Cody?
« Last post by nudone on September 02, 2006, 01:16 AM »
Ok, I hate to be rational here and poo in everybody's parade, but if cody carries a coin, and we all know the approximate size of a coin, then cody's size is determined by that. I'd say palm-sized.

i must say i never thought about that. but if you look close you'll see that it's not a real coin anyway (i know, i know, we all know it's not a 'real' coin), so perhaps the coin is actually the size of a manhole cover.

i think i'm favouring the cody takes the size of whatever is required for the situation. but in a landscape setting he'll be about 12 inches tall.
