Jot+ Notes import feature:  wider than usual range of imports, including Treepad, KeyNote, AZZ Cardfile, Action Outline, MemPad, MasterCook, Vault, IE and Firefox bookmarks, etc.  Good range of exports but (naturally) doesn't export to its competitors' formats  ;)

Interesting summary.

One monitor I use is small, and best at 800 x 600.  I nearly went dizzy from scrolling the screen from side to side...

Suggest a bit more use of spelling checker: I think it's "hierarchy" not "heirarchy."

idea of someone paying $20 for a tshirt and us receiving $3 of that while tshirt company makes $17 is just too much for me to bear.

Good grief.  I didn't realise the ratio was that bad!

Point taken...

And while UNIX (or Mac OS) may be great, it's still Windows that made computing accessible to the masses.

I'd have thought that DOS made computing available to the masses, at least in the sense of a tool commonly used at work, and by that fact, kick-started the move of computers into everyday life?

(if you donated in August and missed this deal, send me a forum message and i will give you the full 100% credits for your recent donation as well).

I did - third time in ~550 days online - and don't think I saw even 50% credits, but I could be wrong there.

Mouser, did you really mean "send a forum message," which I take to be here, rather than a private message?

I know some mailing lists are "converting" emails into forum posts and offer a nntp(?) view too.

Yes...  TheBat!'s mailing list also offers NNTP, two flavours of Web interface, and RSS too.  I was thinking of something I could take away and read without an Internet connection, and add my own annotations to.  Something like that might be useful in making digests of very long threads.

Is there any tool or easy way to convert DC threads into something like a TreepadLite .HJT file for offline reading?

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / Re: New version of ToDoList released

Ok...first of all I am still considered a beginner at all this and there is still much I do not know how to do yet.

At the time I first wrote this program (over 1 year ago) it was much easier for me to create 2 plain text files and load one in each side than it
[...]

OK, I thought it might be something like that.  Thanks for your valiant efforts so far.

Having 2 files is also a good idea if you want to export one for another purpose

Yes, I see the value.  There are other ways of getting the same thing, of course.  Although I'm not a programmer, I've been around a long  time now, and it looks to me as if you probably started with Windows, rather than in the deep mists of time with command lines and things like "fgrep -v"  :D

I like the 2 file system it currently uses and it's very useful to me like it is.

In which case you have no motivation.  Well, it wouldn't be the first time I made suggestions/requests that turned out to be in less than immaculate congruence with the intentions of the developer  ;)

Again, thanks for making it available now

Hotkeys added.  :D

If my combos don't make sense or are overly complicated, let me know.

Thanks.  Responsive authors is what we like   8)

I still wish it were one file, though, for ease of backing up/portability etc.  Maybe a tag preceding each entry with "1" for ToDo and "0" for "Done?"  You'd only have to sort the file once to re-order it, and show the two boxes as now.  But what do I know, I'm no programmer  ;)

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / Re: New version of ToDoList released

Don't forget that would also mean saving both lists, ToDo & Done...and after each item shift too. I am not sure how that would perform with large lists on an old slow pc and if it would have a bad effect on overall performance of the program.

Why not make it one file in two parts, internally like

buy groceries
do laundry
mail package

==============================
make dinner
pick up kids from school

so it's only one file to save?  I don't necessarily mean display it like that, just a way to reduce disk I/O activity.  Also, have you implemented hotkeys?  If you offer the standard Control-S for Save, keyboard-centred people can get into the habit of saving as often as they like, and make their own compromise between security and performance.

General Software Discussion / Re: General brainstorming for Note-taking software
« Last post by rjbull on August 23, 2006, 05:19 AM »
I don't think Notebox Disorganizer has been mentioned so far.  It's aimed at writers, and is truly weird.  Here is part of a third-party review:

No, seriously, you should check out NoteBox Disorganizer:
It's an amazingly useful program.

NoteBox Disorganizer is tailor-made for quickly jotting down notes and
ideas, organizing those notes and ideas, combining selected notes into a
document, and exporting that document for publication. It's truly my
favorite writing program, and I've tried pretty much everything out
there. Here are some of the things that make NoteBox Disorganizer so
outstanding:

* Notes are kept in a spreadsheet-like grid that is easy to understand
and navigate. And that means all your notes are spread out in plain
sight; nothing is hidden away in a database or lost in an outline
"tree."

* It's possible to name each column, so you can easily categorize your
notes under the columns where they belong. Have a note that belongs
under more than one category? Clone it! Change a clone, and that change
is reflected in all of the others.

* It's also possible to name each *row,* so you can lay out a book's
structure before you even start writing.

[...]

I love the side-by-sideness of all this, which gives me a sense of
overview, organization, and control that I don't get in any other
program.

* If you need finer "granularity" in categorizing notes, you can include
note ~keywords in the text (and keep an alphabetical list of those
~keywords) and then do a "bounded" search for them. In Boolean terms,
that's an "And" search, which finds notes that include all of the
specified ~keywords. Don't want to fuss with ~keywords? You can still
use a bounded search to find notes that contain several terms.

You can't rely on either types exclusivly, always have backups of any data you have on. I've heard stories of them failing suddenly with no warning. Plus you could lose it :) .

That seems to mean buying several cheap ones, so you can afford to lose the physical entity if not the data, and to keep several copies of the data.  I wish I knew if there were quality differences, though.

regular expression intensively for its search and replace function. However the syntax is definitely diff from the DO's. I am not sure whether there exist an international standard of regular expression which supposed to be used by everyone.

I'm not sure there ever was.  For example, grep has shorthand lile [:alpha:], [:space:] etc. - but these seem not to be used at all in AWK.  Weird.

Another thing I can still remember is about the "rename" function, TC has the most intuitive and easiest to use interface.

It's very good, and quite visual.  You can see what you're going to do before you do it.  And there's even an Undo feature :)

what is the point if newcomer find no way or very hard to learn the syntax of regular expression?

It's probably hard to "sell" the idea of regular expressions to newbies.  You don't realise how useful they are until you've sued them seriously.  But TucknDar's right, TC's renamer has regular expressions, and even has a  section on them in the help file.

1) DO is relatively weak in handling archive files (compare to Total Commander)
[...] I am a programmer (since the DOS time) but I find DO search difficult to learn, particularly its regular expression syntax (which is also used in renaming files), and there seems to have no detail documentation on this.

Somebody on DC pointed out that if you started computing in the DOS days, you probably used Norton Commander, and you like TC because it's closest to it.  If on the other hand you started with Windows, and used Windows Explorer, you prefer DO.

BTW, TC's archive handling is helped using the multi-arc plug-in.

I've never used DO, but here is a man page on Regular Expressions in general.

General Software Discussion / List fonts for a window?
« Last post by rjbull on August 18, 2006, 08:54 AM »
I've seen various tools that list the fonts on a system, but are there any that will list the fonts in use in a particular window?

The context is using Kleptomania to "scrape" text out of certain programs.  In certain cases, it routinely confuses the digit "1" with lower-case "l" (letter eL).

Thanks...

Living Room / USB sticks - do you need a famous name?
« Last post by rjbull on August 18, 2006, 08:50 AM »
When you buy a USB stick / key / thumb drive, do you need a famous name, or are cheap generic no-name clones perfectly adequate?

I bent my Buffalo one - it still works, but I'm worried that one day the connectors might fail to connect.  Someone at work has a no-name he says works fine, even though it's been through the washing machine twice   :o

Thanks...

Suppose you keep a copy of an organizer at home, another at work, and you want to keep the files in step via a USB key.  Normally you'd just copy the file over, or just keep it on the USB key permanently, but there will always be the odd occasion when you forget.  Does any notekeeping program have a way of reconciling the files by importing new or changed nodes only, without overwriting the whole file?  I assume that's the way Palm PDAs work, but I wondered if it were possible with USB keys.

A review site that will out perform all others will, IMO, get more into tabulated reviews, charts and graphs

I would beg and plead, be sure to state version number, .EXE date and date of review.  Things change over time and you need to know how out of date the review is.
