Ah well....live and learn.

Don't try this with high voltages though...it takes a whole lifetime to learn and before you know it the study course is over while saying the mantra of those right about to go on the travel beyond return.

That mantra would be: 'oops' or 'ohoh' (clinical studies still have not lead to a decisive answer on that one)  ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: Time to reinstall Windows? Or get a new desktop?
« Last post by Shades on September 10, 2008, 09:19 PM »
Now I say that my system is still going strong, but I did change from harddisk during this period. Replicated my complete installation from a SATA harddisk to a SATA2 harddisk using a free tool that took forever (and then some!!). The current lack of sleep turned my brain is just solid mass which would the reason why I can't recall the name at this time.

My laptop runned for 4 years without re-installation before I had enough of the sluggishness from XP in combination with the hardware. Now that laptop is running Windows 2000 and it is again a breeze to work with. XP on a 128MB RAM machine together with a slow 6 GByte harddisk is just 'asking for trouble'.

EDIT: note to self - proofreading should be done before pushing the post button!!

My XP installation is still going strong after 3 years!

But then again...my system is not from 2001.

You can "refresh" your system without losing your setup of software. How?

Check the following link written by our famed and loved Fred Langa. The text and pictures make it easy to do.

Tried the method myself on 5 different PC's and it really works!

Seems to be for CD and DVD.

Looking good everyone  ;D

My pc stinks though  :-[

Bad joke but...
If it stinks, clean out (all) the bugs from it...or wait until they are fossilized (when you have some kind of attachment to the bugs)  :D

Well...LanTan asks for some license, so he could visit the site from the creators, leave money there and in that case he should get some license from them.

The free ones were all given away as I understand from this thread...

So Deozaam's magic 8-ball needs a new battery I think ;)

EDIT: proofreading is a must.

Mostly not, but you notice it immediately if rain is the neighborhood... :tellme:

Once I spend a two week holiday in the Domenican Republic during their rain season. Ideal!
Why? Because it was the whole day excellent weather and between 19:00 and 20:00 it would rain. You could set your watch on that...amazing. So all people went out eating during that time to have a good 'base' before partying all night  ;)

It is one of the pearls of the Carribean and I can recommend the southern and eastern part for the beautiful beaches, sea, food and Latinas (any combination is allowed  ;))

When I was the happy owner of such a similar device, I noted the inscriptions on the power supply. It needed to deliver 12 Volt and 1 Amp for the harddisk (3,5 inch). After an hour my power supply was also hot as hell.

My power supply broke because of too harsh conditions...in summer the ambient temperature rises easily to 45 degrees Celcius. If I ever going to buy such a device again, it will be a small one that uses a notebook harddisk, which requires no more power than what is coming out of an USB port.

Personally I use several text editors (depending the task) but you can always find EDXOR on my computer. It's freeware, 35 Kbyte and you can get it here.

On this page you will find the tool, an image that shows most of the options and multi-lingual manuals. It's interface might feel a bit spartan, but that is actually one of the reasons why I like it.

if you trace the connection from the circled piece back to the big black connector on top you will see that some of these tracks (at the line of holes) have directed a lot of current to the component that is burnt to a crisp. Those holes are discolored (there is a group of three and next to the group is another one)..

This isn't a good thing, because these holes usually mean that the board has more than one layer of circuitry. So it will be hard to tell if and which other component(s) have been damaged as well.

Buying replacement(s) for the damaged component(s) will not be your biggest problem (price wise). However, the labor from the technician is, given the replacement value of a SATA harddisk.

Codes have been changed to protect the innocent....or something like that. The format of this message is also obsolete, but you'll get the idea. A message like this doesn't pose problems, but when the size grows to 100Kbyte or more, Notepad++ completely loses track.

I can "improve" with my HP Omnibook 6000 which has:
Intel Pentium III 500 MHz
14" (4:3) screen
128 MB RAM
CD player
56K modem/100Mbit Networkcard
1(!) USB1.1 port

But it is still going as strong as it did 8 years ago. I love that thing and Windows 2000 runs very nice on it.

XAMPP

Free LAMP but then for Windows. Download the 7-zip version, it only requires unpacking (in a root folder) and you have immediately a working Apache 2.0, MysQL 5 and PHP 5 integrated. Some extra's like a mailserver are included as well.

The original intent for the package is development, not hosting. So the only thing to do is re-configuring Apache for web use.

@Target:

Your solution would be: Tiddlywiki

This is a one file Wiki (with a lot javascript behind it). It's about 300 Kbyte in size when you begin with it, and will grow according to your input. You can put it on a webserver if so desired or keep it on an USB stick.

Instead of a "one-hit-wonder" this Wiki would be a "one-file-wonder"  ;)
