General Software Discussion / Re: Comparative review of password managers
« Last post by wraith808 on September 20, 2016, 10:39 AM »
I've been meaning to try out SpiderOaks Encryptr.

I've been a LastPass user for a couple of years.  Recently, when Copy shut it doors (damn them) I signed up for SpiderOAK.  I had no idea they had a password manager until now and I have just downloaded it for a try out.

let us know how you find it !

I've gotten to the point where, other than software, I don't even take the time to look if you're not paying.  Infrastructure costs, and unless the company just has money to throw away, there will come a time that they need to charge, or go out of business.

I'd never heard of that.  I'd like to take you up on it if you're interested!

Great! :) Can I send you your key via PM?

That would work.  And include an e-mail where I can get in touch with you, and I'll confirm that way.

Thanks!

I've had the same experience. But I've been waiting a while, and have seen nothing official, so I think I'm going to take my chances.

So, with tagspaces, unless you use the hosted cloud version, or the USB version, the installations are totally separate, correct?

So, I think I've made a decision, and will probably purchase this week.  But not a Surface, surprisingly.

I'm going for a Samsung Galaxy TabPro S.  I started to look at what I wanted to use it for.  Honestly, it will be mostly for light coding, markdown, writing, browsing, and reading.  With that in mind, a 4GB, 128GB, i3 or i5 is more than enough.  And in those specs, I can get something better than the Surface, for less.  I've used Samsung products in that niche before on Android, and I like them.  And the fact that it includes the cover and the keyboard in a lower price...

I've heard murmurings that the S2 will be out soon, but not sure that I want to wait- we know how amorphous 'soon' is.

Interesting article:

http://arstechnica.c...ntendo-did-it-first/

I never got into the portable game systems (I tried the Playstation one back when they first came out), but apparently Nintendo did test these waters, in much the same way, for much the same reason, with the same response, though it didn't hurt sales.  But they figured out a way to get it back in with their next iteration, which says something IMO.

My "Make Batch Files" tool acts like a GUI wrapper for CLI, including complicated commands. I can give you a free key in exchange for a review, if you are interested.

I'd never heard of that.  I'd like to take you up on it if you're interested!

Are you looking in the correct location for release notes?

http://cintanotes.com/release-notes/

Development seems quite active.  And I think the purpose of cintanotes is not to compete with onenote or evernote in terms of features- it's to work with text.  Which has it's niche, i.e. people that want to just work with taking notes in text.  It seems that they have a new version almost monthly with one or two new features- that are prioritized by their users in the roadmap at http://roadmap.cintanotes.com/?lang=en.

There are a lot of reasons that I don't use it currently, but lack of development is not one of them.

I guess my point is that Facebook tells you how to do it.  I don't use facebook that much, but I did it long ago.  The instructions were pretty easy, and under privacy.  So you have to decide to take the easy way of just not doing it, or the marginally harder way of finding out how to turn it off by reading the help on facebook.

Thanks for the suggestions

Have you tried Toodledo?

http://www.toodledo.com/

That's what I use with Pocket Informant to have my data available where ever I want it.

My problem would be that it's a web app and my web is often absent.
OTOH I notice that it is on the Sync option list of EssentialPIM, so if I like that but dislike syncing tasks through Google, I could always do it through Toodledo.

I haven't used it on the web in... forever.  So much so, that I didn't know about a lot that had been added.  I just used it to schedule my todos, and I put them in through PI.  It syncs everything, and I only ever see PI, offline, until it needs to sync.

I've never understood why I seem unable to get into Workflowy despite several attempts.
Same here.

Can two or three ipads access the data from one account. (For just the price of admission in each one, maybe about $7 if I remember?).  Normally that would not be an issue, but Evernote now limits their Basic account to two devices (although they do it nicely and it is easy to drop one and add the other.)

Pocket Informant is a universal app; I have one license, and use it on my iPad, my iPad Mini, and my iPhone.

« Last post by wraith808 on September 14, 2016, 09:43 AM »
This one was a hard, but enlightening read.

11869727.jpg

In this day of hard economics, and even harder decisions, you want to help if you're blessed with more than others.  But, as with everything, there's a good way to help, and a decidedly bad way.  This book outlines how the best of intents can lead to really harmful actions.  And more than that, it gives examples of how to turn that around.

Public service is a way of life for Americans; giving is a part of our national character. But compassionate instincts and generous spirits aren’t enough, says veteran urban activist Robert D. Lupton. In this groundbreaking guide, he reveals the disturbing truth about charity: all too much of it has become toxic, devastating to the very people it’s meant to help.

A good review of the book is found at Christianity Today: http://www.christian...w-toxic-charity.html

I read the review when it first came out, but it was apparently free for only a limited time, and now requires a subscription.  But the excerpt given for free is still a good synopsis.

Hi,

Do you get a smidgen of category or layering capability?  A little sophistication?

I am actually keeping my "event calendar" now in my Firefox toolbar, in one folder with a couple of subfolders (e.g. "Weekly Farmers Markets" "2017") and I keep them in date order.  As long as you are working with a few dozen events it works well, although of course it is funky in that you don't have reminders, or a visual calendar, stuff like that.  However, once I place the event in, it is at least very easy to go right back to the page url.  (This is especially good for things like concerts, movies, meetings, that you might want to note .. e.g. Snowden is playing with a live feed after the movie tomorrow night, I just think Stone might have made it a bit risque.)

This is my current Rube Goldberg calendar system.  If I had a good iPad utility, I might keep that as my Windows method.

Steven

Who is this directed towards?  If me, then yes, each event that you enter has a space for Tags.  There is also the ability to merge multiple calendars in one view, which I do - I have a calendar for Yanado, for Work, For Home, and For Family, and all show in the same view.  I also have it syncing with Toodledo for my todos- I find it better to work with software that has one intended task rather than trying to be the kitchen sink, though PI comes close to being in that category, I find that it's just enough without being too much.

See for yourself to an extent; the manual can be found at http://download.pock...%20User%20Manual.pdf.

I personally use Pocket Informant.  It doesn't meet all of your requirements, which is why I didn't mention it before now; there's not a client on the non-mobile platforms.  But it syncs with just about everything, including evernote.  And I find it works well for that.  Just figured I'd go ahead and mention it.

Do try to keep up.
why so bitchy?
I laughed aloud at that.  ;D

^ me too.

April failed to see the funny, and IainB then failed to be gentle about it.
Hey, the two of you, you failed!  :o
But what the heck, we like you any way.

I think you might have been right... originally.  But as it wore on, the blame became a bit one sided.

I heard an adage that I think is applicable in this situation.  If, as you go about your day, you meet a jerk, then you met a jerk.  If, however, everyone you meet is a jerk, then perhaps the jerk is you.

If you go to the forum view, there's a section called "Mouser's Zone".  Under that, there are forums for each of his software offerings.

Audio quality aside, how many of Apple's primary target demographic actually care that much are studio quality or better audio? How many are downloading FLAC files or FLAC-HD files and hoping for top quality playback while listening to audio on a mobile device? The technophiles of <insert technology here> will always take issue when a major shift takes place in the tech realm. However, unless you are talking about a tech-specific manufacturer (Monster audio, Bose, etc), most consumer-level products will adapt and provide "Good enough" quality.

Actually, one of those formats, i.e. ALAC, is Lossless iTunes audio.  And there is a whole subset of audiophiles that do always want lossless quality, and most of them are in that same demographic.  That said, I'm not sure how many use their phone for this.  However, this seems to be a slippery slope that would affect them once it moves on to the iPad flavors, as many of them do use it for that.  This might not be the intent.  But it is downslope of this decision.

After further consideration, I missed an obvious connection.  Musicians.  All of my musical tools that I use connect via the 3.5mm jack.  And the one that I use that even gives the opportunity not to use the 3.5mm jack, doesn't do well over BT, at least in my experience.  And there area lot of musicians that use it in that way.

Check out http://www.ikmultimedia.com/ to see the types of tools to which I'm referring.

No, judging a book by the frustration in reading.  To continuing the analogy, sometimes I get into a book, and when I begin reading, I determine that it's too frustrating to read.  At the end, it might be a good book.  But I have to determine if I'm going to slog through the beginning.

When I go to the pimlical site, I have to put an inordinate amount of effort into finding information.  That's not looking at the cover, that's jumping in and getting frustrated.  For example, the two arrows on the right of the listings that point to the right.  What do they mean?  What's the difference?  I went through a few, and they were not what I was looking for.  So I spent the time clicking and loading- to find out that wasn't the information I was looking for.  That's inexcusable.

If added sophistication is needed, there is always Pimlical (to sit on top of the Google Cal feed).

That's an example of a web site design that completely made me lose my interest in finding out about the software.  It's pretty terrible design.
