Monster crabs are invading Europe. Armed with a jar of mayonnaise, Stephen Bleach steps into battle

An army of red monsters is marching west from Russia. They have eight legs, and huge claws, and they grow up to 6ft wide. They’ll eat anything they can catch. There are 10 million of them, and they’re multiplying rapidly.
So, I ask you, what better way to spend a short break than to nip up to Norway, catch a few with your bare hands and eat them with garlic mayonnaise?

I am trying to compile a list of apps you can run off of a USB drive that you all find useful. Post any apps you use, a url, and what you find useful about it.

Thanks!

Living Room / My Mother is a software pirate

http://www.microsoft-watch.com/content/operating_systems/my_mother_is_a_software_pirate.html?kc=MWRSS02129TX1K0000535

Yesterday, my mom called frantic, because she could no longer connect to the Internet. While we worked through the problem, she asked, "What does it mean that Windows isn't genuine? Do I have spyware, or a virus?"

Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage antipiracy mechanism had branded my mom's computer as running counterfeit software. I set up that computer for her three years ago, and I'm confident that it left here with a legally licensed copy of Windows XP Home.

General Software Discussion / IDEA: Kid-Safe browser
« Last post by Josh on November 14, 2006, 09:01 AM »
I am looking for a web browser that is designed for kids. I.E, functions can be disabled (I.E., printing, new windows, browsing outside certain sites, etc), activex and other content are blocked aside from what is installed already (flash, shockwave, etc), downloads prohibited, etc. I know something like this MUST exist, perhaps one of you kind souls could provide me some guidance.

Thanks!

Living Room / Flying spaghetti monster sighted in Germany!!!

http://blog.wired.com/tableofmalcontents/2006/11/flying_spaghett.html

I did not find the concept of a Flying Spaghetti Monster quite the irrefutable proof against the existence of an invisible old man who lives on a cloud and whom is extremely concerned about the gender of the orifice you insert yourself into that some of my smarmier Internet atheist compatriots do. That said, a real-life sighting of the Flying Spaghetti Monster in Germany has me convinced: the FSM is that invisible old man who lives on a cloud.

Hi,

I would like to add that Opera 9 incorporate a pretty decent downloader.  No need to have a special tools for this.  It evens accept bittorrent download !

Opera's BT support is far from the best thou, plus, what if I decide to move browsers? Can I take opera's d/l manager with me?

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Run Dialog aliases
« Last post by Josh on November 11, 2006, 08:55 AM »
ok, here is an idea that I derived from FARR.

The idea is to create a program, which can be modified to add an indefinite list of aliases, which allows a user to enter an "Alias" for a program to run via Windows Start - Run prompt. So, for example, the user has an alias for the Filezilla FTP client, he enters into the program an alias such as "FZ" which when typed into the start - run prompt, launches the filezilla client.

I know this can be done by adding each application to the system path variable, but that gets sloppy when lots of folders are added, plus its not a good practice as is taught in the MCSE classes for system administrators.

I would like for the gui of this app to have a grid style view where you can see all existing defined aliases, sort them alphabetically, and quickly add/remove existing entries.

Would this be feasible?

Anyways, I am not sure how easy it is to do something like this, but perhaps someone here has an idea. Thanks in advance!

Living Room / Re: How Microsoft Chooses New Sounds
« Last post by Josh on November 11, 2006, 08:32 AM »
Heck, I rather enjoy the new sounds. I am glad they are changing the dated sounds. Yes, 18 months is a long time, but hey, when you have those resources (and I bet it wasnt but maybe a small team working on this project), why not.

[RANT]

Now, May I ask why every thread that comes on DC.Com about vista has to be turned into a negative thread about "I hate vista" or "I will never use vista". Cant we just make a single thread for users like this and leave the others open for users who actually might want to use vista and dont really care whether or not you specifically will be choosing not too? I respect peoples rights to have an opinion about vista, but that opinion doesnt need to be put into every vista thread available. Thats like the orbits download guy posting in every thread about his product.

Actually, the idea that jgp states is a great one. Sorting by views or replies is a good way to do this without an official "voting" or "rating" system.

Well, with the existed for a while issue, you could add a sort option that allows us to either sort by RATING or sort by date. That would allow us to see threads that would otherwise disappear.

General Software Discussion / Windows Vista goes gold
« Last post by Josh on November 08, 2006, 01:48 PM »
It's hard to put Windows Vista in perspective. On the one hand, the product has been in development for over five years, which means that Vista had one of the longest development cycles in the 20+ year history of Windows. (See my Road to Gold series for an exhaustive breakdown of that time period.)

Paradoxically, Windows Vista is both revolutionary and evolutionary. While it includes modern OS features, such as a new hardware-based graphical user interface (GUI), Vista will also feel like familiar territory, for the most part, to anyone that's already familiar with Windows XP. And Mac advocates can claim, truthfully, that many of Vista's best features appeared first on Mac OS X, sometimes years ago.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best free firewall for Windows?
« Last post by Josh on November 08, 2006, 07:21 AM »
I dont suppose anyone remember Conseal PC Firewall by signal9 from back in the day? That was an OUTSTANDING firewall that got bought out, I forget by whom. It worked, it worked well, and it was free.

If you have a spare PC, I would recommend IPCop. It is an outstanding firewall product if you have the spare pc with two or three nics.

PSTray Factory adds a lot of functionality. While its primary function is not what you desire, it does perform the function you want and does it well. I say, for the price, this is the best program available. I cant praise it enough.

General Software Discussion / Office 2007 has been RTM'd
« Last post by Josh on November 06, 2006, 10:54 AM »
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/office2007_gallery_01.asp

Monday morning at 9:00 EST, Microsoft announced that its long-awaited Office 2007 System was complete, setting the stage for a late November 2006 business rollout of the products and a wider consumer launch in January. Microsoft is touting Office 2007, in tandem with upcoming products such as Windows Vista and Exchange Server 2007, as the linchpin of a new round in corporate spending.

"We've crossed the development finish line, and the team deserves to celebrate," says Microsoft president Jeff Raikes , who oversees the company's Business Division. "The 2007 Microsoft Office system RTM completes the most significant improvements to the products in more than a decade. It's rewarding to be able to send this release off to our customers and help them take the next big leap forward in productivity."

Microsoft had previously announced its Office Technology Guarantee program, which allows customers who purchase new PC with Office 2003 preloaded between October 26, 2006 and March 15, 2007 to receive free or inexpensive upgrades to similar Office 2007 product versions. Details about these so-called cross-grades are available through PC makers.

These screenshots depict the Trial version of the final shipping version of Office 2007 Enterprise. The first part of my Microsoft Office 2007 System review will be available shortly.

General Software Discussion / Re: IE7 Rant
« Last post by Josh on November 06, 2006, 06:04 AM »
People, give opera a good try. My guess is that you'll like it.

Actually, I did. I was the biggest opera advocate for about a year. However, due to minor annoyances and the lack of Roboform support, I have had to switch. The wand is nice, but it provides no interface for editing passwords (To edit one, you must delete an existing wand entry and relogin to the site). Other annoyances have plagued me too, such as the fact that opera takes about 5-10 seconds to shutdown (which is annoying when installing an application which requires a browser be closed, or shutting down the system for restart).

Anyways, on that note, as of 2 weeks ago, I've moved to Maxthon (waiting for 2.0, which will be what 1.x should have been). Much nicer and I get back roboform.

General Software Discussion / Re: IE7 Rant
« Last post by Josh on November 06, 2006, 05:13 AM »
The reason why IE opens so fast is because explorer.exe is always running in the background. It's also the reason why all IE based browsers open fast.

Not true, this myth has been disproven time and time again. Opera starts up JUST AS QUICK as IE and uses its own dll's which are preloaded. Explorer.exe, as stated above, is part of the Windows shell, and not IE.

PS tray factory, an app I recommend HIGHLY, does this. It saves all icons that run in the tray, and on explorer crash, restores them. It also helps you unclutter the systray area.

The company I work for has issued an edict banning people from installing IE7, because it doesn't work with their Intranet, nor with the corporate centralised buying system.  So much for compatibility...

Microsoft released several beta's and indicated on said beta pages that compatbility needed to be checked. If the company was really wanting to deploy IE7, I am sure they would have tested for compatibility. People complained that Microsoft wasnt standards compliant, and now when they attempt to move closer to being such, they still get complaints because now things that once worked dont. Do people want standards compliance or do they want stuff to "just work"?
