Revealed: how the FBI coordinated the crackdown on Occupy

New documents prove what was once dismissed as paranoid fantasy: totally integrated corporate-state repression of dissent

"...The Partnership for Civil Justice Fund, in a groundbreaking scoop that should once more shame major US media outlets (why are nonprofits now some of the only entities in America left breaking major civil liberties news?), filed this request. The document – reproduced here in an easily searchable format – shows a terrifying network of coordinated DHS, FBI, police, regional fusion center, and private-sector activity so completely merged into one another that the monstrous whole is, in fact, one entity: in some cases, bearing a single name, the Domestic Security Alliance Council. And it reveals this merged entity to have one centrally planned, locally executed mission. The documents, in short, show the cops and DHS working for and with banks to target, arrest, and politically disable peaceful American citizens...."

Good scope is good! What's the problem? Who are you to argue with Good Scope?  :)

I had one ... project that I was doing for the office but it hit the wall early last spring due to "Scope Conflicts" (e.g. Nobody could/would nail down exactly WTF'ing thing was supposed to do).

Eew Scope clashes. I just ran into that today with my commission. : (

Ah. Got it. I was thinking way back to when spacing was significant and a single space could break things.

And so was I, and for that dashes worked for me because you don't do math on file names. So somewhere underscores made me grumpy. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Good coding conventions - Discussion

What language are you using? Dashes aren't legal in a lot of languages (I can't think of one where they are legal) because that creates ambiguity, e.g.:

Code: C# [Select]
  1. int something = an-integer - another-integer;

Compared with:

Code: C# [Select]
  1. int something = an_integer - another_integer;

(Ghetto) None, becuz I' no programmer bro. I just be a dumb humanities birdie. (/Ghetto)

So my only use case is naming files when I don't feel like seeing a lot of %20's in my file names on remote sites. I use spaces the rest of the time in Windows. So I never ever had a use case for Under_Scores, and now that I'm cranky and senile at an early age they annoy me. : )

Other than I hate the rule we have at work with no underscores!  so private variables are thisIsAProperty and public ones are ThisIsAProperty.  I know they did it because we should be using autoimplemented properties now... but in some cases you can't and that rule sucks!

I sorta get the use of dividers, but what am I missing about Underscores vs Dashes? I somehow mind dashes less, and I have no idea why.

Edit: Oops, per Mouser, I repeated myself. I'll go slink into a corner now. : (

The shots are different sizes because you have limited ability to change the app window size.

Here is the basic app before it starts:
PDF-Batch-Saver-ScreenShot1.png

Here it is running:
PDF-Batch-Saver-ScreenShot2.png

Here is a shot of the output files. Crucial is the function to automatically handle duplicates in the list, because the entire concept came about when doing ordinary saving, having to constantly answer "do you want to replace the existing duplicate". However the numbering method does update the number sequence so that if you have an itemized list, #8 is still #8, even if it's in fact the same page as #2.

PDF-Batch-Saver-ScreenShot3.png

It is intended to be "Run and Forget". I haven't powertested it for colossal data sets, it's prob. not industrial-enterprise grade, but a big test set I had was 215 items. I am a real fan of Trandesk from here, and it runs in the background under Trandesk, and it doesn't use a browser instance like I first envisioned, so I think you can often "park it" to run a batch and then come back to it later. It was crucial for it not to halt mid way and ask about what to do with something, so there are a couple small quirks left over with that.

Beta 2 - Final Release

This copy has been cleaned up with a single processing method, a small bit of help text, and some bug fixes. It is recommended that you check your starting folder not to have PDFs left over from prior runs because otherwise the numbering method could disturb related tracking documents you might have such as an itemized spreadsheet.

(Edit1: "Maximum attachment size allowed: 8000 KB". So it will have to go on my external page.)

I'm not much of a coder. But I do work a lot with administrative scripting as part of my job.
In my case, I currently dislike underscores - and very much like CamelCaps - although there was a time when I preferred the exact opposite. (Aging eyesight has a lot to do with it.)

My eyes have sorta held steady for 20 years, I just somehow conceptually hate underscores. When pushed, I'l use dashes. When did the battle over Dashes vs Underscores happen? Does someone have a nice meaty 3000 word blog to link to?

Ah... I see someone is looking to start a war! ;D

Pascal for this, camel for that, CAPS for another, and _these get underscores, while strThose get a pretty prefix, and so do btnThese. :D
...
I stick mostly to C#, Java, C and VB naming conventions. I like a bit of this and a bit of that. e.g. I like private field names with an _underscore and camel case:
_somePrivateFieldName
I'm not fond of:
m_something

Heh I'm no coder, so allow me to be a pest as a Humanities type intruding where I don't belong!  ;D

I like CamelCaps aesthetically. I hate Under_scores. : )

Living Room / Re: Found on the Web: Short Rant Against Users of Free Web Apps

I wonder if the key problem here isn't so much that a service is technically "free", but that the free users view the service as making money off of them indirectly.  If facebook and google are making billions from advertising off their "free" services, it's not surprising when users don't feel a strong loyalty or bond with the site (how google continues to reap so much good will from people i don't know -- they certainly don't get it from me).

I think the relationship with users is quite different if they don't feel like they are being used as cattle.

Well, I remember when there were a lot of e-greeting services that existed pretty much for the purpose of harvesting email addresses to spam, before people figured out what was going on. Or maybe people still use those, I don't know. So it probably looked a lot like spam, if people have that memory. And the service he provided seemed to be an e-greeting service of a sort, that just happened to have Santa in it.

I do sympathize with the general case, though, of the developer being harassed and hounded for suppport by people getting something for nothing though. That's why HFSLIP (a slipstreaming tool similar to nLite except it was a 30 page batch file) doesn't exist anymore, and he was being hounded by free business users.

Not to go all One Year Later on this, I think 2012 saw more of these sentiments as the ecosystem "matured". I get that there are very few free lunches, maybe only "free snacks", but the early age of computing saw some really fundamental core work being offered for free so that everyone could just move to higher level projects without reinventing round things that make big boxy vehicles go. Especially punctuated with the Apple case, it looks like everyone is rather suddenly in their "free" userbases and trying to cash out not to go broke and escape with their hide as soon as possible. Sleazy finance types know that a classic trick to make people make bad decisions they can profit from is to shorten their customer's timeframe to operate in. From the famous 1-day-sales, to more generalist "Fiscal Cliffs", when the profession is behaving itself, Accounting boards purposely put "Going Concern" concepts into GAAP so that playing games with accounting cut off periods doesn't hide swindles.

So the problem with "Free" services is the little guys running fun little projects are facing the brutal monetization themes that Google and Facebook are doing. So users feel like they can't trust "free" anymore without trying to look into the fine print.
