General Software Discussion / Re: uBlock ad blocker and unwanted behavior
« Last post by tomos on May 13, 2015, 02:52 AM »
ublock origin was closing tabs and such after opening them with no indication half the time, and no way to turn off the functionality other than to opt out for the entire domain.  That's what started this whole thread.  ublock doesn't have that behavior.  they also seem to work the same on the sites that I visit.

ublock for me.

that's my answer :)
thanks very much wraith

^ yeah, I didnt mean to ignore the, eh, 'non-technical' aspects ewemoa.
But after having followed a few of the other links above, it didnt seem to me that anyone is particularly at fault - my impression is that the original main guy was struggling with it's overwhelming popularity; then it was taken over by a young guy who seems to have done a reasonable job in spite of his mistakes (initially claiming authorship seems to have been his only major mistake).

Hence my focus on the technical aspects.

I've been using uBlock for my ad blocker in Chrome for a while.  The memory footprint and cpu usage is a lot less than adblock plus, and it works well.  But recently, they added something where they block urls in requested popups by killing the tab.  It opens up the tab, then kills it.  And it's very hard to disable if you actually *want* to go to the link without disabling it for that entire domain.  So you end up not being able to click in e-mails to go to the location, even if you don't care- without potentially disabling it for those ones that directly use that domain.

Does anyone know how to disable the killing of tabs with uBlock?  I haven't been able to find it...

so, do you (or anyone else?) think that ublock is preferable to ublock origin?
(I mean preferable in terms of how it works.)

One of the things that confuses me is special characters - some software show quite a range, some show very few, some (e.g. Sublime Text, PsPad,) dont seem to cater to special characters at all (or am I missing something there?).

am I even using the correct term here: 'special characters' ?
I know that e.g. quote marks need to be replaced; en dash; etc, etc (I forget what else atm but can check that out)
-
still wondering how e.g. Sublime Text caters to 'special characters' (which makes me think I'm using the wrong term - a search didnt help there).

I'm also still learning, and I must say that Firebug is an amazing tool. Only problem is that you can only play around and not save your changes.

belated thanks David - I'm struggling along with the (very) basics but will check that out

Somewhere along the line we also seem to have lost touch with beloved member 40hz, last seen in february  :(
yeah,
that's been a notable absence. Hopefully he's doing okay (and just taking a break as Edvard says he was talking about).

Remember his turtle avatar was slowly fading?  That was a hint.
I hadnt noticed that -
I see it's gone completely now - and his signature is gone too! - Wish him the best and tell him come visit sometime.

If you have an idea, it's always worth checking out reviews - and amazon (or whoever) reviews, especially those that arent so positive, so as you can get an idea of the weak points.

Notebookcheck.com is a site I like they do fairly in-depth reviews (they are translated but generally that's well done):
Asus N550JK-CN109H
Emissions

System Noise

The noise development of the dual-fan system (see screenshots in the right column) remains within limits even during high load. The fan only spins quietly when the user enables Optimus, and the GTX card is disabled. However, we measured the hard drive's consistent base noise of 33.8 dB(A). Thus, although the fans were always active they were restrained. They spun agreeably consistently without extreme fluctuations between speeds. Games produced a noise level of 42 dB(A); the stress test was only marginally louder.
-
they always compare with a couple of other with similar specs which can be helpful.

When not in use remove the ink cartridges and put them in ziplock bags that have a folded wet paper towel in them.    This will keep them from drying out when left to sit for long periods of time.   Re-insert when you need to print.

if there is a separate printhead in the printer, as in e.g. most canon printers, surely that will dry out (?)

I ended up using WeBuilder because it has the "macros" I need to be efficient as well as side by side coding and preview panes.
-HankFriedman (April 01, 2015, 05:21 PM)

WeBuilder is on offer on BDJ for 32$ or so.
The fine print doesnt say but I presume this is for the commercial version.
License is for one machine only.

This was my take after a 'first-look' (*note I'm a complete novice*):

WeBuilder:
($50/$80 home/commercial)

  • everything easy to find so far
  • customisable shortcuts (dont see any way to export a list of same)
  • cant find shortcut for preview current file (but it surely is there - or customisable)
  • unable to compare two files side by side

Here's an interesting one:
www.brackets.io
it's open source, appears to be supported by adobe (dont know the details there)
EDIT/NOTE:
there are two downloads - one with 'Extract' plugin from Adobe - which does the PSD file stuff (display, measure etc.) described below. This looks good but only works with files in Adobe's cloud which sounds like requiring a creative-cloud subscription (see below).
You can also download without this plugin.

On the right here is Chrome with a live preview:

Screenshot - 2015-05-08 , 12_28_34.png

(dark theme, text enlarged for screenshot)

Via menu or shortcut, it will open and show a preview in Chrome - initially it only showed changes when I saved the working file (no refresh required) -but then it started doing live preview and would highlight the area I was working in and show changes instantly.
This is unfortunately now gone, so it's either buggy or I'm missing something...
[edit] now I got it :) -
it does instant live preview when making changes in the css file - in the html file you have to save before changes shown (but as said needs no refresh in Chrome [/edit]

It also does something very interesting (but implemented in a way you can only use online files ) -
you can display a *.psd file and measure sizes/distances.
menu: help >Open Extract for Brackets Tutorial

**NOTE: you need an AdobeID - you can then upload a .psd file - no idea if this costs -
but it seems very dubious that they dont facilitate local psd files

^ have you seen/tried FreeFileSync (mini-review link).

I havent used it in a while & dont remember if it will meet all your needs -
  • does do 'versioning'
  • I think it does plain file
  • dont know about using VSS

Not sure if you mean something different by 'file and folder backup' - do you want to be able to back up just selected files as opposed to all the folder contents? (FreeFileSync cant do that AFAIK)

Screenshot Captor / Re: Delete or cut and paste selected region
« Last post by tomos on May 08, 2015, 04:36 AM »
^ ah, so I was wrong saying that it doesnt have the concept of background colour.

Perhaps I should add an option to "delete" the selected region and make it background canvas color or transparent (or let user select the color to fill with?)
-
some sort of a delete/fill option would be eaiser to figure out than the above options - let user select the color would be even better

Screenshot Captor / Re: Delete or cut and paste selected region

@IainB :up:

hi chiotteaspam -
generally, in image editors, if you delete, it replaces the area with the background colour - or, in some circumstances, to transparency.
Screenshot Captor (SC) does not (really) have the concept of background colour. Hence the approach as described by IainB.

as IainB says, there is though the menu option:
SpecialFX2 >Patch ... selected region with background
which guesses the background colour and uses that.
I find it mostly works as expected, but sometimes with unusual results:

Screenshot - 2015-05-08 , 10_24_28.png

here it uses the titlebar and menu colours correctly:

I bought that album since (Mad Dogs & Englishmen) and it's great - a real party-piece - and now that I look at the videos I see that they saw it that way too, but kept making great music. Note that some videos may be a wee bit NSFW but nothing too dodgy I dont think (didnt check everything).

in fact I'm struggling to choose which track to post :)
Try
Honkey Tonk Women (musical intro to 1:21 or so):

which sounds a lot better on YT ripped from vinyl - now you just need to sync the two :D

I couldnt really choose though, so, another couple of gems:
Feeling Alright,
The Letter,
Sticks and Stones
and
from Harrison and McCartney respectively:
Something & She Came In Through The Bathroom Window

(should have made a playlist...)

Panasonic Lumix CM1 First Impressions Review

cant see this doing that well - high-end point & shoot's have been getting very fancy of late (with prices heading towards the 1000$ mark).
They have zoom (usually not that much, but still a big factor) - but then I guess this has a phone....

this version has come to the US - first look via imaging-resource.com

Possibly of more long term interest (?) - a multi-lens camera is in development for smartphones:

Startup Light “reimagines photography” - Will phones finally compete with cameras for image quality?

General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for a very flexible timer
« Last post by tomos on May 05, 2015, 04:17 AM »
Maybe this is not yet implemented:
tasks are not saved on closing.
___________

If a timer is active and already stopped/started again - I find the display confusing:
  • I see the end time in the timer
  • I see start time and previous end time below
  • I see previous total below

I cannot at a glance see:
  • how long I've been working on this task in this session
  • and how long I've actually been working on this task in total

I'm wondering, would this help
  • show the end-time slightly greyed when task is active - I suspect this would also have to be refreshed though, in oder to refresh the total time (?)
  • the total time gets refreshed (every second?)
