I have to admit I really like it. It almost treats your app like a web page with links and sliders tucked away in convenient places. For all the office workers of the world who struggle not to learn anything about Word or Excel, this 2007 version will take away all their old excuses on why they can't format a document or letter properly.

What this list doesn't include are DOS apps, which many of us were weaned on in the 80s. Anyone remember some of those disasters, like 'Stacker'? And why no mention of WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows? At one point, Norton Utilities finally got so bad it was declared a virus in some circles!

[Carol]: ... instead of chaging $450 they charged $45 for the program they would wipe out all opposition in a stroke - they wouldn't have to prodece an extra version (Elements) and so reduce development, marketing, production and support costs and they would be absolutely guaranteed to sell more than 10 times the volume. Make it $30 and download only and they would cut out all production costs and everyone on the planet would have a copy.

A few years ago Corel offered its previous version of CorelDRAW and Painter software for about half the retail price. Don't know if they ever made any money, but it was a nice idea.

Autocad is perhaps the third most cracked program, it seems. I asked a simple question and had no idea how deep this rabbit hole went. Inherent in cracking is piracy, but the two need not be married, as fodder, javajones, et al. have pointed out; cracking for many is merely a technical or intellectual challenge. Charging $10 for photoshop would still be too much and besides the point of cracking. (Holy crap, that's got to be the worst paragraph of the year.)

I worked at Barnes and Noble bookstore and we encouraged people to come in, have coffee, and sit and read books. Their philosophy was the reader would eventually buy. Odds on they were correct and most of those "squatters" did buy something, if nothing else than a $5 cup of coffee. But there were always 2-3 people who walked in when the store opened, grabbed ten books or magazines off the shelves, and spent all day reading — all day, every day, 5-6 days a week. It was fascinating to watch.

So one day I asked the manager, "Do you want me to ask that lady to leave? She's been here every day for a month and hasn't bought a damned thing." He said no and that the store policy encouraged more like her. I didn't get it until Carol connected the dots. Thanks.

PS Trivia: The most profitable item in any bookstore are calendars, not books. Believe it.

I think because many feel so much of it is overpriced leading us to say things like "You want €49 for that!" I argue more of the case here.

Let us know your thoughts.

Thanks for the suggestion Vegas. However, between being sick on and off for the past six weeks, travel time between Chicago and Missouri, and now that summer is here, I will be too busy to complete this review. I had worked through a few when I felt well, and after listing 15 — 15! — criteria that goes into making a good renamer, decided the job was too overwhelming. Thus I won't be doing this review after all.

Most renamers do not share a commonly recognizable (or transferable) interface, and it was taking longer than I expected to learn those I was unfamiliar with. So I admit defeat! I apologize for letting you guys down. If I did continue it, I'd need another six months just to find the time now.

Have to agree: PCWorld's Dan Tynan must not have been around during all those 'bad' products. Iomega's ZIP drive kicked butt for a short time, and served as a bridge between the 3.5 Floppy and CD. And when I worked as a security guard years ago, I spent my graveyard shifts surfing using PointCast, which was a lot of fun (until the place got robbed).

But I wouldn't blame PointCast for the robbery. That's going too far!  :P

Well, but remember, this is charting two beta versions — Vista and Office 2007 — on the same system over a 15-day period. May 21st was a bad day all around on Ed's chart!

...we aren't zealots for free software or open source. There are innate values in those kinds of software, but our primary concern should be: what is the best tool for the job. If we can make a contribution to the internet by being a resource for discovering the best tools without regard to hype and marketing dollars, I think everyone will be the better for it.
I couldn't say it any better than that — the best tool for the job at hand — and without limits as to what kind of software it is (shareware, commercial, OS, etc.). For all the things that DonationCoder.com offers to its members and readers, that's first knowledge.

That's an honorable mission, indeed.

Living Room / Re: New Article? Europe: No patents for software
« Last post by zridling on May 24, 2006, 09:20 PM »
Patents in software seem a necessary evil, but they've become nothing more than litigation tools to burn other companies with. Did you know that a football coach can patent their own unique plays on the field? It's true! That's how far the insanity has gone.

Anyone tried out Altiris SVS (Software Virtualization Solution)? PCMag is offering it for free these days, too, and has won a lot of awards.

Download Altiris Software Vizualization Solution 2.0 (at bottom of article)

Carol's right in that Windows XP Backup is one of its hidden gems. I use Acronis for disk imaging, but merely sync my files to another drive and copy them to DVD using DirSync, which I've found to be highly accurate.

Perhaps we could start a targeted email campaign to ask that the major download sites begin distinguishing donationware.

It seems mouser hit upon the crux of the matter with users thinking they're downloading traditional "freeware." Even most freeware authors welcome donations — any donation — on their sites anymore. Hell, would an occasional thank you kill you?
