Shades, can you explain the issue with ACPI?

By the way, my opinion on XP ending support and usage of it on old hardware is - Old hardware is not supported by soft developers too. For example, Adobe products on XP are on their way out. Same goes for some modern browsers and that way you'll be forced to upgrade. So in this case, linux is good as there are always altenative packages that works on low hardware.

If you start accepting such monopoly as fair practice and then also dont mind google stalking you as annoying, or try to justify every act of your favorite brand then you're perfect candidate for chip implants in head.
Are you suggesting there may be something wrong with having chips implanted in one's head?
Enquiring minds need to know.     ;)

Nothing wrong actually if you are not part of 'em.

...But one of the chips primary features is to prevent you from enquiring about things that might upset you. It's the new medication free way to maintain calm from the inside out!

I think things don't end there. Matrix (or inception ) stuff starts from there. It has its own market if it comes to reality. I mean you get to experience things which you can't do. Like say, you never got to do X or Y stuff in real world, inset the chip, login and do whatver stuff you want. Something like second life in mind connected to web. :D

MEWLO Web Framework / Re: OLD - Yumps Videos
« Last post by mahesh2k on April 28, 2012, 02:48 PM »
I will be adding a feature that is a 0-step bridged account creation, which will be suitable for some sites.   This is the kind of thing used in blog comments where you don't want to bother the user by asking them even just for their username -- where the yumps account creation is entirely automatic and behind the scenes, and the user never even has to worry about whether a local account was created for them (a unique username will be created automatically for them).  Then on those occasions where the user is a regular site participant, if the user ever wants to they go to their site yumps profile and modify their info
How about openid? You can add "myopenid API" which is also used on the stackoverflow, if that is what you want.

Enlightenment, xfce, and Lxde are the desktop environment you should consider for the distros. Sometimes distros add a lot of stuff and make the distro very bloated. If you want super low system then puppy linux or slitaz are the perfect systems. Avoid xubuntu if you want xfce based distro because it is too bloated in terms of extra packages.

Slitaz is 30mb distro and Puppylinux is 132mb distro. You can try them if the hardware is low on resource.

Another option Trisquel which is also low on hardware and has some decent packages.
283
If you have an old hardware you should consider using any distro with lxde as window manager. Lubuntu is very low on resources. Ubuntu, suse and mandriva, fedora require modern hardware because of the desktop environment like kde and gnome.

I am not paid customer of Skydrive so no idea about their service.Google apps for domain has 0 support so in case of critical data and issues, never going to trust big brands. Spider oak, dropbox and box on the other hand worth taking shot.

Living Room / Re: Selling Domain Names...Is it worth bothering?
« Last post by mahesh2k on April 28, 2012, 06:10 AM »
Before 2009 it was profitable. Now a days buying a brand domain will get you into trouble and you have to forfeit the domains when they send single email with trademark infringement.

Buying small name domains was all rage because people used to type earlier but these days people hop from one site to another and also use the bookmarking tools, so not much of benefit these days.

On the other hand, if you build a website with some "keyword in domain" and content then site and domain both will have a resale value. Go to flippa to see the market of domains and websites in sale.

Though highly unlikely, anyone ever found google customer service? I mean support via email or ticket? I have seen all their paid and free services are usually supported under one of their crappy interface forums.

They have a platform to protect and have more commercial intentions. Whereas linux is not centralized and is people driven, so microsoft is not shooting themself in the foot, they're just trying to hold the platform as long as possible. I do have some expectations with Wine, but it is far from perfect when it comes to porting games.

I am not missing the point here, thats why i presented android app store example. Like app store, games in linux steam arent going to get filled overnight. Python and C/Cpp, java games? Sure thats easy. C sharp games with dx or ms game dev studio released games? Hell lot of time to port them. In fact these are the games that will take more time to get there.

I know what you mean by driver problem. I have this new Dell vostro 1550 with ubuntu 10.10 which died on current soundcard driver. I am going to upgrade it to see if the driver works. In any case linux hardly suffers  from driver issue like this because most of the time community is quite active for unofficial drivers. e.g sakis3g that supports dongles of almost any manufacturer on linux.

Distro difference is not serious because package building hardly takes few minutes to hours. So if we assume they release steam for ubuntu then it will run on debian and all the chiId distros of it. Only thing will be about porting to non-debian distros which is not hard to setup as another community project on other distros.

I don't think steam people have to convince anyone to develop for linux. Nobody convinced app developers and game developers to develop for android but we all know that many developer are these days developing for android and apple at the same time. All that I see these days are blackberry, Nokia and windows app store without any good apps or games.

LOL !!

Not sure I would take Gabe seriously - they may want to expand into Linux (which would be great) but I can't seem them abandoning Windows any time soon - not matter how much he hates Windows 8.

Don't forget the article is written by people with a vested interest in Linux!

The image is hosted on free image hosting so they are likely to have bandwidth limitation. It doesn't load sometimes.

Doesn't display in thread for me at all, ever - displays fine if I right click on the placeholder and say show in new tab.
-Carol Haynes (April 27, 2012, 05:17 AM)
I didn't mean it that they are abandoning the platform. I don't think we have to take this news as if it is from linux people. What I feel about this news is that more software publishers moving for the  linux or in general away from windows means there is going to be decline of users. I know many people on diaspora using windows only for steam and news like this is going to turn them away from windows if they get same software for linux platform and that is ..big change.

The chaps at Phoronix have confirmation from Valve that the developer are working on a Linux version of their platform-bestriding distribution system, and are even hiring new Linux developers. Phoronix have apparently spoken directly to Mr Newell, who was quite keen on the open-source platform. They report: “His level of Linux interest and commitment was incredible while his negativity for Windows 8 and the future of Microsoft was stunning. In fact, as soon as I return to my office this weekend I plan to try out Windows 8 simply to see if it’s as bad as Gabe states…

« Last post by mahesh2k on April 06, 2012, 12:34 AM »
My knowledge in automobile is pretty much shallow, so I don't know any known improvement as of now. I see a lot of changes in electronics world but I have yet to see any 2-4 wheeler cars for domestic market that consumes less fuel. So far the cars in market are in moderate points when it comes to fuel.

Most of the time the racing is around speed and control, not fuel saving. I doubt they have any goals or even research on fuel saving front in these races. I agree that innovation is driving factor, but it's hard to notice such innovation from domestic front if the fuel part is ignored. Sure, we can see A-list people surfing on moon station, even today, unless it gets cheap in domestic market, it hardly gets noticed.

Fuel. That seems to be the problem here. People are already wasting fuel in NASCAR/Formula 1. If this flying car gets into the market, fuel sources on earth will go down in one year. Another point is about safety. Jetson animation is hard to realize on practical  terms.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is Antivirus Software a Waste of Money?
« Last post by mahesh2k on April 05, 2012, 08:17 PM »
Rootkits, they're quite hard to manage with any security software and windows is the only OS that has tons of them. I have observed few of them on modern windows versions, and they are quite hard to get rid of, so antivirus or not, these creeps are supposed to be dealt with /mbr format.

Living Room / Re: Welcome to Big Brother UK
« Last post by mahesh2k on April 03, 2012, 03:22 AM »
Have you been watching what has happened over the last couple of decades in the US and UK? Almost all politicians are under the financial (and hence political) control of somebody else, and if they remain too independent their own political parties treat them as too hot to handle and through them to the wolves.
That is not just the case of US but almost every country in Europe/Asia. Political tricks are often emulated across the pond by all of these politicians. You have heard about RIAA/MPAA's impact in music/movie industry in India (and some other countries in asia). All the movie studios and labels owned or in partnership with some of the US based brands (Like Time warner, 21st century fox etc) are forcing to bring censorship on net in order to control their business. As for politicians, we have same situations here, each party has their own agenda and they try to push something that benefits their lobby.

The reason I said there are people who bring this to public is because it is easy to become hero by exposing each other for their acts and gain votes or win 5 minutes of fame. So not only politicians but media and some of the NGO's bring such to public's attention for their own benefit. They get their fame or money from the lobbies and after some time we all forget some of these policies and adapt to it.

As for patriotic act, you can't asses that issue from neutral ground anymore after so much involvement of that country in middle east and almost every other islamic country. If they don't pass that act and let any random tom-dick-harry to pass through their country and do his/her thing then normal citizens of america are in danger. Why? because often terrorists target normal people and not politicians to make their point or to grab attention. Though I hate that patriotic act, it's necessary evil which lobbyist and politicians are pushing because of their own messed up situation and for profit. Soon, America will be under birdcage of their own restrictive policies and fear culture and if not, they'll be targeted by people they pissed off in middle east. And it's not even made-up situation by FBI anymore, to some extent there are groups working to harm united states. Even in India, when 26/11 happened, terrorists were after American and British citizens and they spared people from other countries. That tells me everything about the other side of fence.

Last thought - in any western countries these days if you want to get legislation passed you just cite public safety and terrorism as a mantra!
Not true. Legislation is passed with or without public interest. Legislations are passed to the large extent due to lobby interests. SOPA is the only legislation that was opposed all over the globe due to it's impact on American economy (directly or indirectly) and that's why RIAA/MPAA lobby failed to convince other business lobbies for that act. You know the result right? You're assuming that large percentage of Americans are conservatives and that's why terrorism mantra works and that is far from truth. Many liberals, non-liberal-non-conservative crowd is moving away from these type of claims. You know why ron paul is developing some followings? He wants to legalize marijuna, oppose sopa and every other white-collar issues that are ignored by republicans and other liberal parties. The reason obama won last time because he was *not* bush and people never wanted that war. Obama delivered that and there is no direct signs of war with any country today( though some random clashes do exist but no panic signs). The problem with developed nations like united states is that infrastructure and social development issues are negligible and for that reason politicians create artificial problems like - gays in military, prayers in school, Dream of America as a Christian nation, war with terrorism and intellectual property rights issues.

Do you know Santorum made deal with some random SEO agency(as per SEOMoz) for positive reviews across the Internet. Don't be surprised if tomorrow Google or any other SE gets sold with billion of dollars deal to screen negative reviews for these politicians or even get ISP's to block such websites. That is the future, I don't want to see.
