I've been busy installing apps and getting everything squared away since going back to XP, so I've added a few more icons since my last post.

Here is my current tray:

tray.png

From left to right:

DirectFolders
My Life Organized
Direct Access
Active Sync
HP printer utility
Adobe Photo Downloader
First Defense-ISR
Bluetooth
Jetico Firewall v2
NOD32
One Note 2007
Find and Run Robot
USB
Volume control
Altiris SVS
AnVir Task Manager Pro
AltBinz (newsgroup leecher)
OneAlert (calendar and reminders from the maker of My Life Organized)

I am currently trying out PS Tray Factory, so most of those icons are hidden.  I have altbinz and AnVir Task Manager Pro visible at all times as the tray icon animates to give useful information.

I am finding more and more that stump me.  My personal rule is that two consecutive images that are too hard for me to decipher successfully results in me forgoing registration or posting or whatever.  The only time I'll stick it out is there is something very important at stake.

And does anybody else find the audio verification found on some sites oddly unsettling at times?  They just sound creepy with all the bizarre background noise and mumbling voices...

The file modified is in Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\WTablet and it is called Wacom_Tablet.dat

I've posted a possible solution to your original question about changing settings with a hotkey over in your other thread:

Developer's Corner / Re: Change Wacom properties with hotkeys ?
« Last post by cthorpe on March 25, 2008, 07:43 PM »
In XP, the settings seem to be saved in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\WTablet\Wacom_Tablet.dat

Could you write a quick script that stops the Wacom service, switches out config files, and then restarts the service?  That way your hotkey doesn't need to be able to actually modify anything for it to work.  Just make a collection of config files that have all the possible sensitivities you might want and switch them out as needed.

edit...

Even better... the dat file is plain text.  Stop the service, change the file out or edit it somehow, then restart the service.

Ok, so this is all with batch files.  I am certain you can do something better with ahk or some other scripting language, but that's not my thing.  I did soft, mid, and firm settings for this example.  I opened the control panel and changed the setting to full soft, then closed it and copied the dat file to Wacom_TabletSoft.dat.  Then I did the same for firm and mid, copying the dat files to Wacom_TabletFirm and Wacom_TabletMid.  I then made three separate batch files in the same folder like this:

net stop tabletservicewacom
copy /Y Wacom_TabletFirm.dat Wacom_Tablet.dat
net start tabletservicewacom

net stop tabletservicewacom
copy /Y Wacom_TabletSoft.dat Wacom_Tablet.dat
net start tabletservicewacom

net stop tabletservicewacom
copy /Y Wacom_TabletMid.dat Wacom_Tablet.dat
net start tabletservicewacom

Running a batch file changes the settings and they are immediately usable in tablet aware apps (you have to close the app and reopen it first).

My big question is can it use alternate shells, or is it stuck with cmd.exe?

Apparently it doesn't and it doesn't play well with cygwin or vi  :(

It's a no go for me.

I recently upgraded to a brand new PC that came with Vista Home Premium.  All was well and good for a few weeks, and I actually found myself wondering what all the uproar was about.  Vista was running well and everything was great.  Then the crashes started.  I had used XP for years and could only remember a handful of bluescreens.  In a week's time, Vista BSOD'ed on me no less than 10 times.  Some of those occured in the wee hours of the morning and I woke up to them.  Next, programs started refusing to load or unload properly.  More than once, I thought everything was closed and found multiple instances of firefox or winword or even notepad in my process list chewing up memory and spiking CPU for no reason.  Luckily, I had a licensed copy of XP with SP2 available after converting my old PC to Ubuntu.  At this point, if MS pulls support on XP with a major fix to Vista or a new OS, I will jump ship entirely and go with linux.

Yes, I can ping and tracert from behind the router.  IPs are identical as well.  Also, this is a problem in any browser.

Living Room / Strange problem - Cannot access a few sites through my router...
« Last post by cthorpe on March 19, 2008, 04:49 AM »
Got a puzzler for you...

So I have a Buffalo WHR-G54S router that had been running dd-wrt (http://dd-wrt.com) for more than 100 days without a reboot.  Everything was fine, then all of the sudden, I started having trouble accessing certain websites.  At this time, I know that I cannot access http://adobe.com, http://xkcd.com, and http://quantz.com.  In addition, I have come across a few other inaccessible sites in my searches for answers to this problem, though I don't remember their names.  The sites are inaccessible on my desktop PC and my wife's laptop (both running XP) and my iBook.  If I bypass the router and plug directly into the modem, everything works fine.  Obviously, that isn't a workable solution.  I have tried resetting dd-wrt back to default settings, hard rebooting to force the internal memory to clear, reflashing the version of the firmware I was running before, flashing a newer version, and even flashing a different alternative firmware (Tomato http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato) to the router, all to no avail.  The XP installation on my desktop is about 1 week old, and I have taken steps to ensure that it remains as clean as possible.  I haven't messed with mtu's or any other network settings.

I have searched around in the Buffalo, dd-wrt, and Tomato forums and haven't seen any solutions.

Any ideas?

Here is mine:
task.bmp

From left to right:
Altbinz (newsgroup downloader)
FirstClass (groupware for my job)
Windows update notification (I need to install a patch for WMP9)
Find and Run Robot (do I need to explain this one?)
Volume (standard built in XP)
Safely remove USB drive (standard built in XP)
Task Manager Pro (from AnVir - better than Process Explorer IMO)
OneNote 2007 (a double click lets be quickly insert a note)
NOD32 (best AV program around IMO)
Jetico v2 (best FW program around IMO, but not for the faint at heart or people who hate popup warnings)
Bluetooth manager
FDISR (Instant system recovery and multiple "snapshots" of windows installations accessible with just a reboot of the computer)

I will have more soon, but this install of XP is just 3 days old, so I haven't installed everything yet.

I have used all of the major iterations of Office since 97 due to licensing agreements with the University my wife and I are affiliated with.  I recently picked up Office 2007 Enterprise edition for a mere $20 (and yes, like Darwin's faculty license, it is a 100% legit).  I find that it just works.  I can load any of the applications in less than 5 seconds (though I am on an extremely fast PC), and I love the live previews as you scroll through options.  I have found the ribbon to be rather intuitive, and I rarely have to search for more than a few minutes to find some option that I haven't used in 2007 yet.  Once I find it, it makes sense to me why it is located where it is in the ribbon, so I don't have to hunt for it again.

I did run into a nasty bug the other day, however, but it may have been a combination of Office and Vista rather than just Vista.  After a couple of weeks worth of daily use, I suddenly found that when attempting to double click on any files saved in older Office format (doc, ppt, etc), Office would tell me that it was not installed for the current user and that I should run setup again.   I could start all of the applications from the start menu with no problem, as well as double clicking on any file that was saved in the new Office 2007 format (docx, pptx, etc).  Running setup did nothing to solve the problem, nor did Office's repair or diagnostic functions.  I never did solve the problem under Vista.  Instead, I finally found all of the XP drivers I needed for my machine and installed XP.  Office 2007 is back to running perfectly fine.

I also purchased it with the 58% off Bits du Jour offer.  I found that it was taking less than half of the memory and virtual memory as Process Explorer, and like Darwin I also saw that it was using less than 1% of CPU time when minimized.

As for updates, the dev site says on http://www.anvir.com/order.htm

The registration code will turn off all nag screens and shareware limitations, and work with future updates.

I don't see anything to imply that there is a time limit or version limit on future updates, so it would seem that it's lifetime.

General Software Discussion / Raxco - Amazing customer service
« Last post by cthorpe on February 26, 2008, 09:41 PM »
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Raxco Software in any way, and I do not receive any compensation for any sales that come about because of this post.  Furthermore, DonationCoder.com does not receive any compensation for sales generated by the members discount that we are currently running on Raxco's programs.  Also, my story is not a guarantee that  you will receive the same benefits that I have received as a Raxco customer.  That means you shouldn't email them demanding that they match the offers made to me.  That being said, they have treated me like their number 1 customer from the very beginning, and I see no reason to think their customer support would be anything less than stellar for anybody who contact them.

Before I begin, I want to make it clear that most of my dealings with Raxco Software (http://www.raxco.com) that I am posting about, including the offer of a complimentary license to PefectDisk 2008, were prior to me being on the DonationCoder.com staff.  The only interactions I have had with Raxco since joining the DC staff were to arrange the current members discount and licenses for our January drawing, getting a Vista compatible installer for a program, and getting that promised PerfectDisk license.

In 2006, I was looking to purchase a program called FirstDefense-ISR (my mini-review) from Raxco.  At that time, the software was available on their website for somewhere around $80 for a direct download.  The software was also available on a CD from a few different distributors for less, as tends to happen with quite a few programs (I can recall Acronis TrueImage and NOD32 being substantially cheaper on CD than as direct downloads).  I called Raxco to inquire about the difference in price, and I was offered a coupon code that put the price for the direct download very close to the CD version.  The best thing, however, is that representative told me that the code was good for anything and everything in Raxco's online store.  I found that I could buy a "Powerpack," which was PerfectDisk and FirstDefense together, for about the same price as FirstDefense was without the code.  On top of that, I could add a second "Powerpack" for a few bucks more.  So that's what I did.  I bought two Powerpacks, one for my desktop and one for my wife's laptop.  The day I purchased the software, I got an email from the sales rep that had given me the coupon to thank me for my purchase.  A few days after I had purchased the programs, a techsupport rep from Raxco called me to thank me for my purchase and to see if I had any questions or needed any assistance in getting the ball rolling with FirstDefense.

Over the next year, I had a few issues with FirstDefense, and each time, I either called or emailed Raxco and got an immediate response.  I don't recall ever being on hold at any time that I called.  I never got the impression that someone I spoke with at the company was just reading from a script or giving me canned responses to my questions.  They always asked me what steps I had taken so far on my end, and worked with me from there.  I never got the impression that the representative did not take my concern or issue seriously.  Even more amazing, I called at least one time and got the same level of support without ever having to identify myself as a registered user.

Fast forward a year or so, and Raxco emailed all of their FirstDefense customers to tell them that they were no longer going to be distributing FirstDefense.  They also released a version of PerfectDisk that many power users were not happy with.  Like many FD users, I was upset by that decision, and I emailed Raxco with a couple of questions and to express my dismay.  I asked if I could get a download of the latest version of FD before they completely pulled the plug.  I also expressed my concerns with the direction the company had taken with PerfectDisk.  Unfortunately, that email went unanswered.  I emailed a couple of weeks later to ask if anyone was able to respond.  I got an immediate reply from Wendy Clontz, their manager of customer service.  She was very apologetic about my first email going unanswered.  She responded to my questions and concerns to the best of her ability.  She provided me with a download of the current version of FD, and expressed that Raxco would continue to support FD for their customers as long as possible.  In response to my concerns about PerfectDisk, she offered me a license to that version of PerfectDisk, as well as a promise of a license to the next version of PerfectDisk.

Fast forward about 8 months, and I bought a brand new Vista computer.  Unfortunately, the last version of FirstDefense that Ms. Clontz had provided for me was not Vista compatible, so I couldn't install the program.  I had noticed that Raxco had continued to offer updates to FD, even after distributing it, as the developer made them available, and that one of those updates added Vista compatibility.  I emailed her again, and she provided me with the latest installer they had, and it is Vista compatible.

Just a few weeks ago, Raxco released PerfectDisk 2008.  Remembering that Ms. Clontz had promised me a free license when it came out, I emailed her two days ago to ask if her offer still stood.  She responded within 24 hours with a serial number for PerfectDisk 2008 Professional, which I promptly installed (it's fantastic, btw).

Everything about Raxco is a class act.  I can say, without hesitation, that their customer service is the best I have ever encountered, online or off.  As you know, great customer service can go a long way, even if the product is not the best around.  In Raxco's case, however, their software matches their support.  PerfectDisk consistently gets top marks.  FirstDefense, though no longer offered by Raxco or the developer, revolutionized the way I use my computer.

One time that download protection could have been useful (though I didn't purchase it and luckily the company was kind enough to help me out)...

I purchased a program quite a while back for my old XP machine from Raxco (http://www.raxco.com).  For an additional price, I could have added extended support, download, and upgrade protection (for major updates).  During the time I was using it, a few minor updates came out for new functionality and bug fixes.  An update came down the pipe at one point that made the software Vista compatible.  Eventually, Raxco stopped selling the program, and stated that they would provide support for any users who had purchased the extended support, upgrade, and download service.  Fast forward a few months, and I bought a new PC with Vista.  The original installer that I had archived for the program would not install at all under Vista.  The upgrades, including the Vista compatible version, I had downloaded were not standalone installers.  If I had the extended support and download protection, I would have been able to log into the site and download a Vista compatible installer without a hitch.  Fortunately, the vendor has exceptional customer service, and when I contacted them to ask if there was any way they could help me out, they immediately provided me with a link to download a compatible installer.  They also offered to provide any customer support I would need to get the program up and running on Vista.

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Raxco, nor do I receive any compensation for any sales that this post generates.  I am simply one of their customers who has been consistently impressed with their professionalism and customer support.

I have a hauppage wintv tuner from an old pc of mine. This is a PCI form factor device, and was known to work in the computer it was in. If anyone is interested, please, inquire within.

How old is the card?  Any chance that it would work with Vista?  Here is a list on the company website of working cards
http://www.hauppauge...s/support/vista.html

If it is compatible and not already spoken for, I would love to have it.

Wow, I just realized how old the message about the card was that I replied about.  Oh well.

If you want to backup  your data to a server somewhere, there are quite a few backup or synchronization programs that will do that for you.  I use Backup4All for my main backup of data files to other computers on my home network.  There is a program called Jungle Disk that was recently written up at CyberNetNews that looks very good for backing up to Amazon S3 (http://cybernetnews....ups-using-amazon-s3/).

I use three different players depending on what I am listening to.

For just playing a single album, I use Billy.

If I'm going to be on my computer for an extended length of time, I will fire up MusicIP Mixer, pick a few good songs and let it generate a mix.

Finally, I have a Zune and a Zune Pass (unlimited downloads and plays of most of the Zune catalog), so if I am putting tracks on it or looking around for something brand new I'll go with that one.

General Software Discussion / Re: What is your boot time?
« Last post by cthorpe on January 31, 2008, 11:05 AM »
I get from a cold start to Vista login in about 20 seconds.  From there, I have a usable machine in about 40 seconds.  A few things are still starting up for about 20 seconds more, but its not anything that causes the machine to be unusable.  Of course, my PC is only a few weeks old, so it better be fast.

Before I installed any additional startup programs, I was booting to Vista login in around 20 seconds, and getting fully started in less that 20 more after entering my password, so Vista is very quick when starting.
