Ok I'm going to have to say.. good point Curt, it's not a small change.. but tinjaw is right.. if the programs follow some guide lines, they should retrieve the correct path to the users' folders, and not use any hardcode paths at all..

And as for your annoying username problem, you can either change the display of it (logon, start menu) via the User management in Control Panel. This doesn't change the \Documents and Settings\Username to the new name, it merely changes a few locations that displays the username.. If you're fine with this, then do that..

Other wise if you want to completely remove the username, just create a new user (which will be your new account), copy all the \Documents and Settings\OldUserName to your .\NewUserName.. After you have copied all your old username settings to your new username.. You can assign admin (well you should have done that when you created the new account) priv's to your new account.. Then delete the old username..  :D

tinjaw: I know about TweakUI XP :P Do I need to repeat my self.. Nice screen shot though :D

Thanks guys for your fast input.. but I know about the standard ways you can do it..

But I was thinking along the lines of.. would it be more efficient to use a junction? or just use the normal way to change paths..

Actually I think it's ok to use a junction (folder that points to another folder, but acts as that folder), but then again, it might be overkill for such a small change? idk.

Hello,

I know that you can change the My Documents (C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents by default) location in WinXP via the registry (either manually or by using a tool such as TweakUI XP, etc.)

And you could also use a junction in place of the standard My Documents folder that points to your new location..

I wanted to know what would be the best way of changing the default location for My Documents, My Music, etc.

What it be best to just change the locations via the registry? Or would it be better to use junctions? Would using junctions be too much for such a simple thing? Does using one or the other effect any programs seeking those special folders?

General Review Discussion / Re: Vote for what Review to do Next

I'd like to see the older reviews updated, most are from 2005/6 and are out dated.. Would be good to see them all fresh and new for 2007/8.. Will be a lot of work, but well worth it.

in the world of hacking (and people who take a stab at it..), it's called cracking.. (malicious hacking).. well the people who take a stab call it hacking any way, lol..

i don't know why they can't just call it "malicious hacking" any ways.. :o

just like fodder said, every one and there dog is "hacking" things these days.. css hacks, code hacking, spade hacking, hacking hacking, hack here hack there.

i think hackers get a bit upset and try to use the term cracker to show the bad side of hacking.. this is all very well in the hacking/netsec scene.. but in the software cracking/reversing scene a cracker is some one who cracks software which has nothing to do with hacking networks, pbx's, ipods or css (not that css is related to any real hacking..)

hacking and cracking is used interchangeably..

yeap, hardlinks and related are really nice.. especially when moving around directories and stuff.. makes organizing easier.

for example i use D:\Desktop for my desktop files, so i create a file C:\Documents and Settings\mitzevo\Desktop to be a symlink to D:\desktop instead of changing the paths via the registry, etc.

I kinda agree about ms not making these features obvious, but then again only people who know what they are doing should have easy access to features like this.

web developer and firebug are good.

this is the stupidiest shit i've seen for a week.. (lol), so i can go to jail or get fined for having telnet on my computer? shit. obviously not, but you can do a lot with telnet.. it's probably one of the most basic "hacker tools"..

do they really know any thing about "hacker tools"? a web browser can be used to do a lot of damage.. so is our web browsers hacker tools? what about nbtstat and related? what about all the tools included in most *nix distro's... WTF... i imagine these days there are a lot of network testing/scanning/probing tools included with *nix.. this is the tip of the iceberg..

obviously.. im going a little crazy, but they don't actually know that many tools can be used for ill purposes even though they are not used for such.. like a hex editor, a telnet/ssh client, and all this stuff is standard on pretty much most boxes these days..

General Software Discussion / Re: Is the Windows start menu dead?
« Last post by mitzevo on July 04, 2007, 01:13 AM »
Start menu isn't dead.. I mean when you are not on your own windows box or any windows box that you have setup to your likings (family, friends, work, clients, etc.), the start menu is always there.. and normal computer users always use the start menu. So start menu will always be a standard, and any thing less/more is personal preference.

I seemed to have caught a lot of breath lately, need to borrow some mouser? Where's that sensible reply of yours??  ;D

mm, very interesting stuff.. this vistaglance looks good.

tag2find also sounds like it is coming along nicely..

Please forgive me, mitzevo, but I think you have been unfair. Paint.NET is an excellent paint program, compared to MS Paint. Paint is the program to compare Paint.NET with, not Photoshop and The Gimp.

Hey hey Curt.. The reason why I am listing it within the ranks of GIMP and PS is because it is very good. :-P What I mean was I never actually used it.. (Only to crop an image and add some text).. A lot of people like it - I'm not downing it in any way.  :-[

Hehe, I've been playing this game with my mate a few days now.. Would be good if it was 2 player.. also some more AI would be better.. It kinda sucks seeing it always do the same angle every now and then :/

I thought about giving RoR a go.. I don't really like the look of it.. And I don't want to learn another language..

Actually I'm quite happy with PHP and a framework or two.. There are a few RoR based frameworks for PHP, Akelos for example:

The Akelos Framework is a PHP4 and PHP5 port of Ruby on Rails Web Development Framework

commercial software fuels open source.. if commercial software didn't exist, who would every one blame?

other than that I pay for good software, nothing less. (most good software is free :D)

Finished Programs / Re: SOLVED: desktop icon manager/grouping
« Last post by mitzevo on June 26, 2007, 11:13 PM »
and im still wanting a good desktop manager.. :P

let's recap.. I'm looking for a nice desktop application that pretty much overlays (or sits on top of) the desktop.
Think of it as an invisible grid. Now I forgot what I was  going to say.. I'll have to finish later :P

Hi, this website may be of interest to some of you developers and designers - it's a project based upon making web application integration easy.. you know.. having a blog, forum, wiki, etc. all rolled into one website, all while maintaining a consistent look and feel. Of course management of all web applications would ideally be done through one administration panel (one time login).

What are you guys opinions on this? Do you have any interest in such a project? Would you contribute your own advice and code/design on how to integrate the web applications you like to use?

Mouser's Url Snooper works fine for these types of jobs ;)

tag2find looks good but I was at work when I tried it and my work computer's filesystems are FAT, and tag2find doesn't support that. So I tried tagg, and it seems to work fine with FAT filesystems  ;D

Guess I'll try tag2find on my box at home.

I think you're going a bit overboard there Darwin - I don't really think any program can be made to organize the start menu based off Type of program/function/name/etc. The same thing happens.. one program will always fit into another category, and that's the main point of this thread I think.. no action because of an utter need to have every thing sorted correctly and efficiently.

Basically what I propose, under All Programs.. you have a similar linux/unix categorization scheme, which goes a little some thing like this:

Office
Multimedia OR Audio & Video
Tools
Graphics OR Graphics & Design
Games OR Entertainment OR Games & Entertainment
Internet OR Internet & Network
Accessories

^--- that, imo, seems to be a good starting structure, you can then add parent categories like "System Development", "Web Development", "Programming", etc.

Now you could get carried away for example:

you're thinking "hmm, some of the items in Multimedia come under Entertainment.. some of the programs in Graphics are Tools... how should I sort those "

then you're thinking "some of the Games are multiplayer games therefor they could go into Internet & Network,

"this is a nightmare, how im gonna organize this shiz?  :-\"

that point is, there is none for this type of extreme and perfectionist type of categorization.
