I can help translating between English and German. And I can test all the Linux applications; windows applications I can only test if they run under wine.

Adventures of Baby Cody / Re: Germany
« Last post by housetier on November 30, 2009, 02:06 PM »
I want to request the presence of the Supreme Being Cody in Berlin, Germany. Who has got him now? We need to exchange addresses.

Cody might make quite a few new penguin friends at the 26c3 congress this year. And since hadez is coming too, there will be lots of very good pictures.

Living Room / Third DC meet-up of the German faction
« Last post by housetier on November 30, 2009, 01:55 PM »
I would like to invite all the Berlin-based users and friends of donationcoder.com to the third get-together.

Again, c-base seems like a good place to meet. So, I have decided this meet-up shall take place on Sunday, January 3rd at 6pm in the mainhall of c-base.

Participants will receive one super-awesome mug, specially created for the meet-ups at c-base. If you already received one such mug, you may not get another one though ;) The mugs are huge with a handle large enough for the whole hand!

Living Room / looking for an old science-fiction movie
« Last post by housetier on November 27, 2009, 02:34 PM »
Many (more than 10) years ago I watched a science-fiction movie. I do not remember much of it though, just glimpses of scenes.

  • In one scene the astronaut is driving on the moon surface in a moon buggy. After he passes, a robot rises from the dust and looks after the buggy. Like all other robots in that movie it has a red eye.
  • In another scene two astronauts finds a human skeleton in a brightly lit room that could be a control room or so. Shortly after this scene, insectoid red-eyed robots attack and are fended off with machine guns.
  • Towards the end of the movie an astronaut seems to sit in an escape pod, the ramp is aimed at the earth.

That is everything I can recall from this movie.

Do you have any ideas whatsoever, which movie this might be?

You could use timebook.

I can't help but recommend using FF 3.5 over 3.0, it's so much faster overall.

That's the way to do it: offer a discount right away :)

for me, mplayer has always been sufficient. But I know there are more media players, and I think some of them might actually benefit from this pack.

Under which license are these distributed?

mod4 starts managing mode. mod4+shift is for moving stuff around (mod4+shift+2 moves the currently active window to desktop number 2. mod4+2 simply switches to desktop number 2.

mod4+j/k selects the next/previous window of the current desktop; the order is shown at the top with the taskbar-like thingy. mod4+shift+j/k moves the windows around on the current desktop.

mod4+space selects a different layout for the current desktop. A layout describes how windows are placed on the desktop. mod4+u jumps directly to the window which has set a highlight (or urgent) flag.

mod4+m takes a window out of the normal layout control and makes it fullscreen; pressing mod4+m again resets to "normal" behavior. mod4+shift+c is essentially the same as clicking the "x" in conventional window managers.

windows can be dragged to a new position with mod4+leftclick. Windows that have the floating flag set can be dragged to any position, normal windows will snap into their new place according to layout.

Usually windows do not overlap; exceptions are floating windows, maximized windows (mod4+m), and when in fullscreen layout.

Layouts can be configured, maybe even on the fly using lua. awesome does have a notification area that is compatible with the freedesktop.org specification which means gnome and kde tools can use it. I haven't found a taskbar thingy that is compatible with applets from gnome.

mod4+r starts a command prompt for launching whatever commands you want. I am certain you can define keyboard shortcuts for programs you use often.

That's all for now :)

Developer's Corner / Re: What's your Programming Language?

And then someone comes up with an example that proves the opposite, thereby showing how "pointful" programming language warscomparisons are...

mod4 usually is the windows-key.

Most of these keyboard-centric applications or addons come with a default keybing set. Often users create alternative layout to deal with conflicts. I am lucky to not suffer from such conflicts so I can go with the defaults.

Haven't found videos showcasing awesome yet, but am still looking.

Interesting, but the system is not for me. I try to do as little as possible with the mouse. I have found awesome to really help that goal.

But if you are an apt mouse pusher, this might improve "performance" (as in getting tasks done).

Wasn't capitalism or at least a market all about "consumer choice"? Now that there is no choice, do they really wonder where the consumers went?

By taking away your choice to rent a movie now they are essentially telling you to take your business somewhere else. I don't like arguments so much so I would follow their hint and cancel any subscriptions, plans, and anything that makes you give them dollars.

That was a very nice film!

I liked best when he was sending customers down the street to get their pepsi cheaper. I'd love to go on a shopping spree in that shop!

I'd want the number block on the left side so the mouse won't be too far away from the center of the keyboard. Better yet, completely do away with the number block like many laptops do
