I've been a Tall Emu/Online Armor customer, but they were just sold to Emsisoft. Hopefully the OA firewall doesn't change too much or I *could* switch to Outpost.

For lists I will now use Size Matters to monitor specific files and TreeSize Free to monitor large directories.

Putting aside the issues I've had with IObit in the past, I figured I would try the free and portable IObit Uninstaller. Like most of their products, it does look good.

Right away I noticed the installation dates are wrong. For example, Revo Uninstaller and MyUninstaller can correctly recognize that I updated XnView a few days ago, but IObit still thinks my installation is three years old.

So IObit can't get this basic info correct, but I'm supposed to trust it to select the correct registry entries to remove? Well crud, I'll stick with the proven Revo and MyUninstaller for now.

Hi Contro. I'm not sure about this "predefined list of files".

SpaceSniffer and OverDisk are two personal faves, but sounds like you may want lists rather than graphical representations.

Have you tried any of the space analysis tools such as TreeSize Free or GetFoldersize which provide lists?

Sorry if I'm on the wrong track here--you might want to go over to Coding Snacks and ask for help.

Universal Extractor is a great utility which I'm using more often lately.

For example, I recently downloaded the setup file for the freeware Duplicate Cleaner 1.45b from the official Digital Volcano site. I consider that site to be a "trusted" download site, but nonetheless I extracted the setup file (which was noticeably larger than the prior version) and it had some strange foreign files in there which looked suspicious to me.

I'm not a spyware expert, and I honestly have no idea what was going on there--all I know is it looked suspect. I have the 1.45a setup file, and none of those foreign files were included in that version.

Thanks to Universal Extractor, I didn't have to worry about possibly infecting/compromising my system. I extracted the essential files, and avoided any issues.

I tried Imagina and thought its image rendering was fantastic, but I experienced an issue with the full images being misaligned to the right side. Not sure why?--my monitor's native resolution is 1680X1050.

Thanks Deozaan, now I won't have to give up Tiny Watcher.  

Here are some basic Tiny Watcher points...

-If it's the first time a process has been detected, then notification is given.

-If a process or file has been modified in the slightest, then notification is given.

-Regular/checkup scans are very fast--usually 2-3 seconds on my system.

-I scan scan every couple days or when I think about it--not every boot. I like that it's not intrusive like some security apps (but of course it's no substitute for a full-blown HIPS).

-Tiny Watcher's log file is a useful source of information.
  Example 1: I installed and uninstalled Macrium Reflect two years ago and now cannot remember the names of its driver files. No problem, it's in Tiny Watcher's log file.

  Example 2: I just performed a huge Windows Update and would like to know exactly which files have been modified. No problem, it's in Tiny Watcher's log file.

Yep, I love this little monitoring tool and I'm glad to know it works on Windows 7.

Seems Tiny Watcher hasn't been updated in a considerable time. This little app has been indispensable on my XP system.

I suspect I know the depressing answer, but could someone kindly tell if this app works on Windows 7? perhaps in compatibility mode?

If not, I wonder what the prospects are of the developer updating this useful software?

Simple DVD Creator (freeware) would supposedly fall into scenario 2: it does not re-encode the mpeg2 file.

I don't really *know* if this info is correct, but it's worth a shot to save unnecessary re-encoding time.

Take note that clicking on Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder's trash icon does NOT delete to the Recycle Bin as might be expected. Just something to keep in mind for the click-happy folks like myself who occasionally click on the wrong pic.

Other than that minor aspect, ADPF is worthwhile image comparison software--drag & drop folders, click on "Start Search" and you're processing images. Simple and effective.

Yeah, admittedly I haven't looked into many extensions yet. So far I'm just interested in Iron as an alternative browser because it's got good speed and they offer a portable build.

Looks like the way it's going with extensions Chrome/Iron will be a Firefox clone in no time. Kinda funny how some folks go extensions crazy and choke the browser to death. I've seen posts on other forums where someone is tweaking away to achieve browser speed all the while running 30+ extensions. Duh!

Well, time to check out the portable version and see if there are any noticeable improvements. Hope the annoying mouse issue has been addressed (or at least I'm lucky enough to work around it).

What type of HD do you have? Both Seagate and Western Digital have free (stripped down) versions of Acronis which allow full image backups.

Those manufacturer versions may not have all the bells and whistles of the latest Acronis version, but they provide a free solution which works well enough for me. I use Seagate DiskWizard and have restored a full image backup several times without issue.

If I weren't using a Seagate or WD version of Acronis, I would go with Macrium Reflect.

I test these image comparison apps all the time, and most are not worth a mention here at DC.

I didn't really expect too much with a freeware named Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder, but I'm very pleasantly surprised with this one. They have a portable version, it's very easy to use, and the accuracy is very good. It's a keeper!

I have seen mentions of a free audio editor named Power Sound Editor Free. I never took the time to check it out, and then I saw Free Audio Editor 2010. Based on the download file size and screenshots, this appears to be the exact same software (with different names?) on at least 3 sites.

Yep, the Options/Exclusions section of OA is what I meant. Sorry I haven't responded before now, but I've been computer-less for the last few weeks (ie. failed power supply).

Hope your issues were resolved or at least minimized so that you can continue to use your preferred hotkey apps.
