50 pounds of pot mailed to wrong address
What would YOU do if you got 50 pounds of pot in the mail? Make brownies?

Good question... I don't partake, but I have friends that do... then again... I'd be paranoid having had that much arrive.

That's pretty scary, because whoever it belongs to will certainly want it back. Give it away and hope they don't find out that it arrived at your home? You pretty much can't give it to the police as they'd stick a flashlight & swab so far up your butt that the cotton would clean your ear wax while the flashlight would help your dentist...

Ok, I have a heavy LOVE for music and this is really one of the best that I can think of:

Can anyone else think of a better rock anthem?

I can't.

In the above medley that 4wd posted, the Bon Scott scenes were damn good!

These are my headphones:

The overear fabric is a velvet cover for them. Very comfy.

Oh, I know! That's a damn good episode, and probably one of the best Twilight Zone episodes ever.

It fits into discussions about language and linguistics just like the Humpty Dumpty quote from Through the Looking Glass.

And they are addictive... The series really nails so many different elements of human existence. The Monsters are Due on Maple Street is an excellent example.

My NAS is still down as I've not had time to get it up and running yet (need to rebuild and get a new drive), so I can't get to my collection there, which is probably good because I just don't have time for it right now. :D

Plastic (or leather) gets hot and sweaty.

I had a nice pair of Sony headphones that spent years in the pouch in the drawer for that reason.  I only broke them out when I wanted to blast my stereo in the early AM.  Even with the A/C on my ears got itchy.

I find it very odd that fabric over-ear headphones are so hard to find. They are far more comfortable. Like you say -- even with A/C.

I don't like to keep earbuds in for very long.

That's one of the reasons why I use over-ear headphones. They don't get painful like earbuds. The only issue is that it's a bit harder to find over-ear headphones with fabric instead of plastic for the covers. Plastic (or leather) gets hot and sweaty.

Would you connect those devices to, say, your phone?

No.  So I guess that answering the rest is rendered moot?

When I say I wouldn't connect those things... I really mean it.  And though I don't understand everything in regards to the security, I do know enough to prevent corruption of the non-connected method via other connections.  I don't care what advantages I'd get from doing it, unless I could be sure that it was totally inviolate, I wouldn't.  Which you can't be sure of.  So I don't.

I'm on board there about not connecting things, but I'm also not sure how long that option will exist if you want to have a fridge or washing machine.

Just look at cars now. They're all jammed full of computers. If you want a car that can't be hacked, you're going to have to get an older one, and probably one prior to 1996 (or round abouts).

I think all of this will be rammed down our throats just like cars have.

What will happen is some tool will start screaming about how fridges and washing machines need to be more environmentally friendly and CO2 blah blah blah. They manufacturers will have legislation rammed down their throats and will have to build in computers that monitor electricity usage, etc. etc.

Then some douchewad will propose legislation to track electricity usage for household appliances, etc. etc. All appliances will need to report to Big Brother about their electricity consumption. Those that don't have reports will have the Green Police show up at their house telling them that their old appliances are no longer legal and that they have to get new ones that spy on them.

While that may sound a bit over the top, it's probably not that far from what we'll actually see in reality.

"Choice" is the enemy of the control freak, and that's what we're seeing now. Those choices will be removed one way or another.

General Software Discussion / Re: Unique Solution to Pirates

I just wanted to point out that i think its a terrible idea for software to do bad things to a user's computer or files if it suspects that it has been pirated.

That pretty much goes without saying. There's a pretty big line between scaring the piss out of someone and actually screwing up their computer.

But, like... c'mon... Blood dripping down a white static screen with a translucent, demonic face muttering things like "behind you" over top of radio static noise and a popup asking whether you want to sell your soul? That's some lovely Hallowe'en stuff right there~! ;D

But that's all really "in your face". Why not be a bit more subtle... go after their sanity...

Imagine it's just a programming problem.

1. Discover whether they have speakers or headphones, and what kind?
2. Use 3D audio to play sounds in different locations - to their left. Slightly behind them. Over their shoulders...
3. Schedule playback of different audio in different locations over months with the intensity building slowly.

For the audio, you can use lower resolutions for smaller file sizes and automatically get that old radio static built in to a degree.

Oh... the fun just thinking of it~! ;D

4. Slowly work in video, like TV white noise flashing, or faint overlays of faces or horrific scenes that fade in/out.
5. Schedule the video similar to the audio with increasing intensity.
6. After a year or so have a final climax if they haven't already called in an exorcist~! ;D

And think of what you could do with their webcam! Record bits of their own audio then process it to get useful tidbits to play back. Just how creepy would it be to hear yourself? Disjoint audio that picks out single words to play back? "He... sleeps..." The later, "He... rises"?

In the end, with enough imagination, it would probably be far kinder to simply go after their systems rather than their minds. :P

MWAHAHAHAHAAHA~!

12 Things You Should Never Do on Airplanes

Oh god... The WORST advice you can possibly get for flying.

  • Come to the airport with a bottle of water
  • Drink it.
  • Fill it up past security unless you want to pay $5 per 0.5 L of water
  • But food or bring food -- you will starve to death if you think the airline will feed you
  • Stop giving a s**t about security. They're being dicks, so don't worry about "hurrying" -- they're causing the slow down, not you -- take your time taking your shoes and belt off.
  • Declare everything as a weapon that could possibly be used --- yes, they are that stupid
  • Get up whenever you damn well feel like and walk around.
  • The flight attendants are just doing their jobs and repeating BS lies - pay them no attention other than to be polite
  • No, your mobile phone won't cause a crash.
  • No, your laptop won't cause a crash.
  • No, farting doesn't cause planes to crash.
  • Yes - they are full of BS.

Flying is one of the most unpleasant things you can do. Many third world countries make it a lot more enjoyable, but if you need to fly in the first world, you're hosed -- it ain't gonna be fun.

Ok... So I go outside for a smoke, and I trip across this:
http://www.bbc.co.uk...ancelled-in-malaysia

That's priceless. I sometimes wonder whether the BBC doesn't try to do its level best to grind its face into its own poo. It's probably a form of ritual liberal-marxist religio-political self-abasement as penance/atonement and as proxy for an imagined history of racial abuse by white male (mainly British) colonists.

It just fits in so well with "Cherry 2000". I'd just mentioned that yesterday, and what's in the news today??? Yep. that.

I loathe the BBC. But, that's a Basement topic. ;)

Love and Sex with Robots conference cancelled in Malaysia

The Love and Sex with Robots conference due to be held in Malaysia has been cancelled by police for being "illegal".

The annual event, which was supposed to go ahead on 16 November, was called "ridiculous" by police chief Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

There was "nothing scientific about having sex with machines," he said.

An apology has since been posted on the event organiser's website, loveandsexwithrobots.org.

It said the cancellation was because of "circumstances beyond our control.

"The conference will definitely not be held anywhere in Malaysia.

"We deeply apologise to any person or any authority which has felt offence in any way," a statement said.

More at the link.

But did I call it or what???

Cherry 2000 is about technology, human sexuality, freewill, and companionship. Lots for people to lose their minds over in that film. But nobody is losing their minds and freaking out in this thread.

:P

You don't get to have art and have it divorced from politics or social issues. That's what good art is about -- something to make you think.

OH MY FREAKING CRIPES ALMIGHTY~!

This is just 1,000,000 degrees of awesomeness~!

It's got:

  • 9/11
  • Conspiracies
  • Back to the Future (the movie)
  • Funky wildness
  • "Concentrating collective consciousness onto a single space-time focal point" (Just how friggin' awesome is that???)
  • And so much MOAR~!

And it's in the friggin' WASHINGTON POST!!!

At under 13 minutes (11 minutes after the credits), this is going to be one of the best/wonkiest films you've seen in forever!

I've got $5 in DC credits for anyone* that watches it and isn't one of:

  • Entertained
  • Freaked out a bit
  • Saying to themselves, "WTF did I just watch???"

(* Must have >50 posts and have posted in this thread before. Max 4 people.)

And that's why the wonky, freaky stuff always has a place~! :P ;D

Hm... Interesting. It's rather like old malware behaviour, so it is sort of, well, not sure how to describe it.

On the other hand, doing something like that could be a very interesting project.

Just thinking about my own software (link in sig below), my initial thoughts are to play back phrases and sound effects to make the user think that their computer is possessed by some kind of evil entity or demon.

  • Hail Satan
  • Kill your mother
  • Kill kill kill kill
  • It's on backwards, backwards, backwards, <echoing>
  • <door creaking>
  • <screaming in pain>
  • <stuttering> I s-s-s-sold h-h-him
  • Damnation comes
  • Darkness grows
  • Shave your head off
  • I'm behind you

Oh god... the horrible, terrible things that you could do. Watch a few Rob Zombie movies and let your imagination go nuts!

Make the screen flicker as you're doing all of that!

Put on "white noise" then fade in and out twisted demon faces that speak!

Have blood stop dripping down the screen!

Put a graphically disturbing pop-up with two buttons:

  • Delete all your files?
  • Sell your soul?

Play system sounds randomly, or dig into them and figure out some really nasty timings for them.

Oh, the fun you could have~!

Pen Test Partners have a nice little bit about a kettle...

https://www.pentestp...security-issues-meh/

NEW WI-FI KETTLE, SAME OLD SECURITY ISSUES? MEH.

We saw that Smarter's iKettle 2.0 and Smarter Coffee machine were reviewed on ITV’s This Morning yesterday.

If you’re not familiar with the iKettle it’s a device that solves one problem (physically having to get up and switch your kettle on!) and creates a whole bunch more.

We haven’t been shy about our security research findings, you can find them covered here, here, here, and here.

The fundamental issue is that if you have this kettle it’s possible for someone to get your wireless network key, and help themselves to whatever is on your network, or use your Wi-Fi for whatever purpose they choose.

Anyway, that’s all in the past because the new iKettle 2.0 model fixes all that. …erm, except it doesn’t.

More at the link.

IoT is going to burn a lot of people. ;)
