I've my doubts about sharing my wireless internet connection. What if, someone uses my internet connection to download via p2p, send spam or worse? Authorities would come to my place...

Is there some kind of security in "Fon" to prevent such things?

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Keepass Password Safe mini-review
« Last post by wr975 on June 18, 2006, 02:28 PM »
Nice review.

But I think you missed two options:

There is no way to cache a password/keyfile for X Number of minutes after entering your password. You are required to enter it everytime you restore the app from tray. This again, is a small annoyance and nowhere near a show stopper

You're not required to enter the password each time you restore the app. Only if you tell the application to do so ("lock workspace when minimizing").

If you want to cache the password for a certain amount of time use the option "Automatically lock workspace after... seconds". In the advanced parameters the program can be configured to terminate the app instead of locking.

There is no way to have it CLOSE TO TRAY, I.E. you press the X to close it, and have it min to tray instead. This is a feature I've grown acustom to with various apps that remain in my tray.
There is clearly the option "Close button [X] minimizes .. instead of terminating app"

General Software Discussion / Re: Are free web hosting services legit?
« Last post by wr975 on June 12, 2006, 03:50 PM »
I would appreciate some advice on how to transmit large files.  I don’t have the need or resources to set up a full blown website but I have some large files (50 to 100 MB) I would like to upload to a site to make available for download to selected folks.

I had the exact same need. I tried to find a free web hosting provider, but it was a waste of time. I agree with everything Mouser said.

Then I tried uploading services, like Rapidshare, YouSendIt, zUPload.. but uploading is sometimes slow and plenty of people don't know how to download from it.

So, finally, I gave up and just bought a webspace. Being cheap I tried GoDaddy. I got much more than I wanted (5 GB space, php, sql server, tons of site tools...) and I do not regret my decision.

FWIW, for easy sharing I recommend CSBFTP (http://www.toffi-net...P-support/eindex.php). Just right-click a file and it'll be uploaded to a FTP Server + the download link(s) will be copied to the clipboard.

I would appreciate a utility to fool my PC into thinking that A DRIVE NAME THAT I PROVIDE ( OR A MAPPED NETWORK DRIVE ) is actually my CD or DVD drive...

For games this won't work. You can't copy the CD/DVD protection on your HDD. You'd have to create a image of this game cd/dvd using a tool like Alcohol 120% and mount it, but most new games won't start if they detect a virtual cd emulator installed, no matter if you actually mounted an image or not.

If you own the game, you can go to GameCopyWorld and download a "patch". That's what I do, because I don't like to insert DVDs just to start a game.

the only thing is a nag screen when it updates. To me that is no big deal, one click and it's gone.

In another forum I read of this registry hack. It should disable the nag screen.

Copy in notepad, edit the path to your antivir installation if necessary, save as "disable.reg", double-click disable.reg to import it in your registry. Done.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Safer\CodeIdentifiers\0\Paths\{3f4dabe0-8061-4eb3-8ae7-265a4c579700}]
"Description"="Disallow start of avnotify.exe."
"SaferFlags"=dword:00000000
"ItemData"="C:\\Program Files\\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\\avnotify.exe"

Another way is to use the security tab in file properties of the file "avnotify.exe", and just disallow it to start. But XP Home users don't see this tab (unless they boot in safe mode). So using this registry hack is probably easier.

General Software Discussion / Re: Help with AutoHotkey to Terminate Process
« Last post by wr975 on May 01, 2006, 02:45 AM »
I have tried to write a script but without any luck.  Can someone help me write an ahk to do the following in Windows XP?

1. Press Control-Alt-Del to open the Windows Task Manager
2. Go to the 'Processes' tab
3. Select the program called "stupidprogram.exe"
4. Click 'End Process' button
5. Close Application

Thanks,
jdd

Try the command "process" to kill a task.

http://www.autohotke...commands/Process.htm

Example

process,close,stupidprogram.exe

I think the whole issue undervalues AHK and the work which went into it the last past years. I mean, if I'd donate to XviD nobody would get the idea to split it and give half to DivX. As AHK emerged nobody thought it would get more popular than (the more powerful) AutoIt. Well, it happened. Since it doesn't remove any references to AutoIt, a lot of people who use AHK hear from AutoIt the first time and of course try it. I think that's a fair trade for the few % of used AutoIt source code + modified AutoIt programs.

Anyway, my last words about this: It's not up the donater to decide who should get something, but the one who receives the donation. If the author of AHK feels AutoIt deserves something, he should give some of the donation money he receives.
283
I object.

I donated for AHK, not AutoIt.

As for the "stolen" source code (there're many threads about this elsewhere, no need to start here again):

Suggestion: Create a new fund for AutoIt + give users the possibility to transfer spent DonationCredits from AHK to AutoIt (like via Email request.)

[edit] I've just noticed that it's not looking good. For some reason, it appears streched. But it didn't when i tested it locally. anybody knows a solution? (i think i also have to upload an html page)[/edit]
You're right. You have to upload the html page + link to it, else it'll look streched.

BTW: Disable wallpapers if you're doing screenvideos. They're just bloating up the filesize.

have a clue about WLAN's today use to secure their wireless networks (WPA with AEP/TKIP).
I read somewhere about someone who said WPA/TKIP is insecure and can be broken (not brute force)... After a long read: TKIP is insecure with short passwords only.  :-\

I'm using WPA/AES anyway, but I took the recommendation to use really strong passwords generated by http://www.grc.com/passwords

I've also configured and activated the MAC-Filter; network cards which are allowed. I know it's no problems for real hackers, but good enough for script kiddies.

And every some time I check for firmware updates. This shouldn't be necessary, but the admin log-on tells the name of the router (I wish it wouldn't do so). Any possible hacker sees the router I use, researches possible exploits and he's in...

General Software Discussion / Re: Suggestions for Usenet Binary Downloader?

What I love the most out of that piece of software is its lifetime registration PLUS registration for all software that the author has made or will make. It's worth every penny.

Lifetime updates sounds nice, but are there updates? ;)

The current version is 9.4, released 4/20//2005 !
SBNews now supports the new yEnc encoding format!

Maybe this information will be satisfying:   http://www.binaries4all.com/newsreaders/

Great link!!

That's exactly how I thought a newsreader review could be done (if ever).

a.) List common features and compare which Newsreaders supports what
b.) Give a recommendation, but no "Best client is"
c.) Tell users to try and find their best one.

I noted, most clients do not support post RAR/PAR processing. There're external tools available doing it. I used DLdone for a while, but replaced it with Par-N-Rar. It's not perfect, but at least there's some kind of development...

General Software Discussion / Re: Suggestions for Usenet Binary Downloader?
« Last post by wr975 on April 23, 2006, 11:25 AM »

Best binary downloader isn't an easy answer and frankly, I don't think it can be given. Everyone has different needs. As example, assigning priorities is important for you, but not for me. Best is to try every client out there and just use the one you like best.

I think the best binary downloader is Usenet Explorer. But it's not easy getting into it. I really tried, but never felt comfortable.

Now here's what I use, and I hope I'm not sounding like a fanboy now:

I'm using Newsleecher. It was the only binary Usenet-client back then which was good enough to make me move on from Xnews. (I still use Xnews for text only groups.) Now, I don't know if I'd choose Newsleecher. I think other programs caught up and perhaps they're better. There are a lot of good ones out there. But I'm quite happy with Newsleecher, so I've no need to test something else joining the neverending quest of finding the perfect program.

Why I use it? Plenty of reasons. Most of all, I just feel comfortable using it. I like the GUI. It's easy to use, but still powerful. It can leech and handle millions of headers without getting a ressource hog and it stores headers in a small database. I can use it on two different computers w/ different IPs the same time and the progam is not blacklisting my registration. It works quite stable, there was a lot of development the last year (not only bug fixes but GUI changes + new major features) and licenses get some extra days whenever they've server troubles. And it has basic text-reader support (reading, replying, posting new.... in future versions Newsleecher should get a full featured text-newsreader, that's something I look forward to).
292
Good idea, but no, I never installed something from Symantec or any kind of reycle bin protector.

293

I like using Scanner. Simple & easy. Just right-click a folder to delete it.

http://www.steffengerlach.de/freeware

Just wondering if this happens on my machine only. Rarely I find several hundred MB of data in C:\RECYCLER (system folder, recycle bin) even if I emptied the recycle bin and Windows told me it's empty.

Looking in C:\RECYCLE I see at least two folders named llike

S-1-5-21-4147852415-1003663588-2812303019-1119
...

One of them contains the data "Scanner.exe" found. I can erase this one folder, while the other one is protected by Windows (obviously the true recycle bin).

Anyone experienced the same?

Kerio noticed me about verclsid.exe just yesterday. I thought I caught malware somewhere.

Good to know it's just a new MS service. *phew*

[rant]
The Windows Explorer update isn't the only patch in Microsoft's latest round to cause trouble for some users.
No surprise. "Security Experts" search abstract security leaks 24/7. Publish them online to a.) get their 15 minutes of fame and b.) force MS patching the leak ASAP. Real bad dudes say "Thank you" and use the well documented leak on sites/banner ads to inject malware/trojans. MS gets blamed by the media for not fixing such bugs, has no time for testing and here we've the result...

Sure, other browers get their bugs fixed faster, but tons of (business) software isn't depending on them.[/rant]

Can't help it, i still play Doom (the first).

Oh yes, same here. The game is more than 10 years old but still fun.

Childhood games... that would be C-64 for me.

My first game was "Human Race" by Mastertronic on a C-64 tape. The music, done by Rob Hubbard, was the best part of the game. (Click here if you have interest. I like track 4 most.  ;)

There were some great games on this system... Boulder Dash, Wizball, Paradroid, Last Ninja, World Games, and, and and... If I would have to choose the most favorite game, it would be a tie between "Maniac Mansion" and "Defender of the Crown". It's incredible these games could be played on a system with 64 KB memory... Java games for cell phones are larger than that!

General Software Discussion / Re: Searching a good Screenrecorder
« Last post by wr975 on April 15, 2006, 01:35 PM »
From watching the two movies it is clearly the Wink movie that is more complex because there are more changes in screen contents in the Wink movie. Also the Wink movie was recorded with a gradient Title Bar that also increases the size. Finally the Wink movie could be smaller by reducing the number of colours (by adding a palette to the Wink project). I did a quick test trying to mimic the BBFlashback movie as much as possible (with textboxes and pauses) and got a 275 KB file from Wink. Still not as small as the BB Flashback movie but certainly much more comparable.
I didn't even note that and had to look in the settings why there is no gradient title bar. I recorded both movies on the same computer and saved the files in 32 bit. Flashback was configured to disable graphic effects while recording, that's why there is no gradient title bar.

mistakes during recording since everything is recorded and not just screenshots of actual actions.
It's truly a matter of taste. I rather erase some frames and re-record the mouse movement, than inserting screenshots I forgot. :)

In fact, if you keep in mind you can easily erase whole parts, I redo screen operations while recording. I just do the same again, and later erase the whole section where I messed up. The time bar in Flashback allows precise editing.

While Wink can do continuous (timed) capture it is not in the same league as either Camtasia or BB Flashback in this regard and this is also not the goal of Wink. The best/smallest projects with Wink are done with input-driven capture that automatically captures screenshots for each key press and mouse click.
True, I read here several times now Wink is not designed for live action capture. So my sample isn't a good example for Wink. Also it's not optimized and not showing anything Wink can really do. It's just a tiny sample. Nothing more.

If someone volunteers to do a proper Wink 2.0 sample, I'll gladly replace my link + even offer server space.

The afterwards editing of a project is easier in a framebased project than a continuous captured project.
Guess we won't agree. ;-)

I've been using Wink 1.5 for a long time and then I got Flashback. As someone who knows both worlds, I've to say it's easier in Flashback. But then, I've used Wink the wrong way. Input-driven capture was too much work, so I eventually started using timed-capture only.

It is impossible to do simple edits of cursor position in both Camtasia and BB FlashBack.
Can't speak for Camtasia, but Flashback allows changing the cursor position.

I find Wink 2.0 more powerful than BB Flashback in both the editing and interactivity part
Interactivity, yes. But it's a power user feature, too complicated for the masses. A "pause" is all I need.
Editing? Again, each to it's own. I say no. Wink 1.5 got quite a ressource hog with larger projects, editing got a pain. Also it's not quite easy to insert another Wink movie. Did Wink 2.0 improve?

And the price of Wink can't be beat as already mentioned

Agree 100%.

Anyway, my last words about this:

Wink is a great freeware. For me right in the same league as Autohotkey or StrokeIt. And if I wouldn't have won Flashback, I'd be still using Wink.

For small projects and framed capture (screenshots) with some interactivity, it's the best there is. For live action it just can't compete with Flashback/Camtasia, at least not now... but these applications cost $200! No freeware should be compared with high priced applications, but people do. I guess this alone shows how good Wink is. Perhaps Wink will improve in the most important aspect: smooth videos/live action. Then it would rule. Now with audio recording/editing it probably beats middle priced solutions like Flashback Express/Snag It...

General Software Discussion / Re: Searching a good Screenrecorder
« Last post by wr975 on April 14, 2006, 08:10 AM »
last time i tried it it wasn't good at all at producing smooth flowing movies automatically (or at least i didnt see how to do it).

It was my main interest to see if Wink 2.0 changed something in this area. Unless there's something I missed, it's exactly the same. Just like the old version it offers three modes.

  • Single frame capture - You've to tell when it should do a snapshot
  • Timed frame capture - Creates a snapshot at a given intervall (like 4 frames / second)
  • Input Driven - Creates a snapshot every time you click a mouse button or press a key

My short sample was done with timed frame capture, 4 frames/sec. More frames/sec would make the video smoother, but increase file size.

For optimal use someone would need to change between the three recording modes while recording.

Wink 2.0 has been completely rewritten:

New features:

  • Translated to more languages
  • Undo/Redo
  • Unlimited textboxes
  • Unlimited buttons
  • URL Buttons to open a webpage when clicked
  • Image objects
  • Shape objects, create and use shapes just like callouts with no text
  • Audio (can record while capturing, as well as add/edit later)
  • Improved and simpler properties panel
  • Improved flow of control in output swf file so no more flickering of title/callouts when no buttons are used
  • Ability to disable frames in a project so they won’t appear in output

My first impression: Looks like old Wink and the only major new feature is Audio recording/editing.

Guess the result of the screen recorder review won't change much. Wink is the best freeware one and a very good piece of software, but can't challenge commercial solutions, like Camtasia or BB Flashback.

BTW: BB Flashback got recently updated to version 1.5. It didn't change a lot, but now it creates incredible small SWF files.

Here's a screen video I made for a friend the other day:

BB Flashback 1.5
