I think many of the free PDFs readers have "freehand" pens, highlighters, etc.

I was just dinkin' around with Acrobat, and it does appear that you can make the bottom margin huge.  When viewing the PDF, this will essentially make it smaller.  (Rather make it appear smaller)

Those are cute, but...
I'm not sure I would call them icons? Sure, they might come in (high-res) icon dimensions, and even in .ico files, but... I dunno, am I being overly pedantic?

A valid point.  Most folks who have attempted to define what an icon should look like have suggested that the image should relay some meaning as to the purpose of the icon itself...

Hey you never know:  If I was doing a big dissertation on the various characters of the cartoon series Futurama, and I needed to have different subfolders for my notes about each character....  And if I wanted custom images on those folders....  Well, I'd have it made!

Extra note:
It occurs to me that I should reference the artist
Artist: PixelPirate (Lasse Salling) (Available for custom work)

No doubt you've tried all the "Save As..." option in Word.
284
Truth be told--there are probably good freeware alternatives to any of these.
As I said above, I'm a long time fan of Photoplus and Drawplus.  I doubt that PP is any more powerful than GIMP.  DP is comparable to Inkscape or Paint.net, I think.  DP has really nice shape-builder tools as well as good effects for makings outlines, bevels, shadows, etc.  Also it has a nice "cut-out studio."  (though GIMP also lets you do cut outs)

As folks have mentioned above, you'll get "special offers" such as the Uniblue stuff in the Serif installers.  Another annoyance is that you get a "register me" pop up that NEVER goes away unless you register.  Registering takes you to this screen:

If you ever uninstall/reinstall the software, you'll have to call again.  There's no way to just register online....  They'll use the opportunity to try and sell you more stuff.  No biggie though.  The guy is pretty polite, and you can haggle with him.

Also, they'll email paid upgrade offers.  Ignore the first half dozen or so offers, then they'll start emailing better offers.

The extra spam that I get from them is not too bad.  No worse than Ashampoo.

Another note:  If you're thinking of getting a webbuilding app, I learned about this somewhere (maybe here, or Gizmo's?)
http://expression.mi...t.com/en-US/cc136523
Expression Web v4 is free.  The download link says "trial" but it's a full free version.  It seems like a pretty capable app.  I don't know much about making websites, so can't give an expert opinion.  Also I've never looked at the Serif Web one, so can't compare.

285
Probably the size is because of all the clipart, fonts, textures, tutorials, etc.  The apps do use up a lot of RAM when running, but they load fairly quickly.
286
I can't speak to the others, but DrawPlusX4 and PhotoPlusX4 are both really good products.
They just recently came out with PhotoPlus X6.  DrawPlus is currently at X5, but I imagine they'll come out with X6 soon.
PhotoPlus is  probably not any more powerful than the GIMP, though PP is probably easier to use.
IMHO though DP is a stand-alone product.  It's been my go-to app for vector work for years.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Screenshot Captor - New Quick Capture Bar
« Last post by kunkel321 on December 29, 2012, 12:57 PM »
How is the progress going on this Mouser??

As indicated in this crosspost ...
I managed to setup Minicap (https://www.donation...r/MiniCap/index.html) so that it's fully transparent   :)

Used command line
"C:\Program Files\MiniCap\MiniCap.exe" -captureregselect -save C:\Users\Kunkel\Minicaps\Img-$date$-$uniquenum0$.png -exit  -postrun "C:\Program Files\ScreenshotCaptor\Tools\sImgurUploader\sImgurUploader.exe $file$"
Had to make a folder for Minicap to save files.  Works good though.  I'll cross-post this over there....

Would be kindof neat if your Quick Cap Bar could give a similar option.  Not necessarily launching MiniCap...   I just mean the "transparent" part.

Funny, I too, own TC, x2, and XY.   ;D
Each has unique strengths that the other two does not have.

Definitely XYplorer excels in its scriptability--and other ways too.

As you have said, even though the developer promises to continue honoring the lifetime licences, after 2012, he will no longer SELL them.  If anyone has considered purchasing XY, now is the time.  And be sure to get "lifetime pro."

EDIT:  And btw, I too, had Don incorporate a feature request within hours :)

I'm actually surprised by the degree to which this has streamlined my ability to post screenshots onto the various tech forums I frequent.

I kind of had the impression that Avanquest were a bit like Ashampoo, doing some of their own and some relabelled stuff, ...
This is also my impression.  Same thing with Serif.  Kindof annoying, but oh well.

RE Expert PDF 8:  Is there anyone out there that uses Sophos and has been unable to register?
On my home computer (with Norton), everything is fine, but at work (with Sophos), I get an error "Cannot access ...  blah permissions."  I think it's a false positive with the SNUpdater.exe module.

Do you mean it makes a PDF that is a list of links, or does it get the webpages that the URLs point to and convert those?
If the latter, I image this would work well with the Docear mindmap project.  http://www.docear.org/
