CSearcher has had some relative success, I've had thousands of downloads on my site and until today I only received one donation. It was something I expected but it is still a bit of a disencouraging and leaves me with little motivation to continue to evolve into more complex features.
I need to find this motivation (and some free time) to be able to implement these features.

Despite this I made another version
-hugo nabais (May 08, 2017, 08:23 AM)

I downloaded several versions not realizing the program was written by someone on DC.  Seeing this thread I think I will put the new release on a USB just to try it out in a portable scenario.  Thanks for the software.

Afa the donations my feeling is that one is most likely to receive a steady stream of donations if the software enables the user to get something else either very cheaply or for free.  Examples might be News readers or ICQ apps that make it easy to download binaries.  Or video conversion programs that squish a BluRay image into a file of more manageable size etc..  It seems like software that does a useful function in and of itself is less likely to provoke a contribution.  But this is just my visceral reaction, not the results of a scientific survey.  :)

For me the donation is an unexpected event that makes me feel good that someone liked my software enough to take the time to send the donation and a comment.  Mouser makes a good point about the $1.99 - $4.99 "cheap" software Apps available these days.  I have to wonder how much they can really pull in at those prices.  But in my short experience using Android I could believe the downloads are multiplied by the fact the store search is built in and people know where to look for most things.  So if one developed a media player or something similar maybe sales in the thousands and more could be possible. It would be interesting to see some data on how much the most popular Apps actually take in.

Edit:  It looks like I may not be able to give the application a fair trial.  My Laptop has issues where it cannot update .NET or do other Windows Updates.  Many programs that use Windows Installer I have to install/uninstall multiple times to get them to go on the system etc..  So it may not be an issue with others.  The symptom is an unhandled exception with some text about "mouse drag" and .NET form code.  According to the dialog it loaded .NET 4.0 assemblies.

It looks like I may be due to get a Windows 10 machine as much as I hate the idea of pushed updates.  Windows 8.0 is kind of a dog in many ways, at least on this system where I cannot update out of it to 8.1 or newer.

Edit2:  If I select Continue in the unhandled exception dialog then do a simple search the program goes away.  Likely my system does not play well with any software that requires .NET 4+.  So I would suggest not wasting time to trouble shoot it.  This Lappy was an "Open Box" purchase and trouble shooting those it a real time thief.  Which is why the original purchaser returned it I am sure.  :)

If I get something else Windows to try it with I'll give CSearcher another try then.  :)

Non-Windows Software / Re: Android 6 tablet Cmd keys?

Those tablets seem like they come with the keyboard, and are made for them, looking at the marketing, but I could be wrong.  It's billed as a 2-in-one, not a tablet with a case.

Good point. I guess that's what happens when I speak in ignorance. Next time I'll click the link to look at the product before saying anything. :-[

It may be a distinction without a difference.  The 7 inch RCA I have is sold stand-alone as well as with a dedicated case with keyboard that it snaps into.  In any case I have stopped fretting over it.   :D

What kind of device?  Lots of Android devices out there.  Without that information, no one is going to be able to really help you much, I don't think. :)

It's this one  https://www.walmart....Marshmallow/54458714

Many of the keyboards are built for Windows or dual boot Android/windows devices.

Many tablets also come in different versions: Dual boot, RemixOS, pure Windows or Android etc.

This is easy to realize because these are only firmware changes. But it would be too expensive to produce different hardware keyboards for them.

Therefore you may have cmd keys on your keyboard, which have no use on your current OS.

That sound logical.  If it had W10 it would likely act as the Winkey.

Have you dared to press them already? :-[ ;D ;D ;D

A few combos yeah.  Strange that Viking docs don't mention them.
This has a lot of special keys like one for the 3 dot menu.  But the Cmd keys are down with control Alt Spacbar atc. so it should be a modifier for hotkeys.  Seems to do nada.

Isn't Cmd an Apple thing? Maybe the case was intended for iPads?

That's what I thought.  afaik RCA tablets are either Android or Windows 10 preloadd.

Anyone know what  Cmd keys on either side of the spacebar are for?  I get no reaction from them.  This is keyboard built into the tablet case.  Not onscreen.

Search gets me nothing.

Non-Windows Software / Android Raindrop.io or alternative
« Last post by MilesAhead on April 28, 2017, 06:56 AM »
Since it is a bit of a pain to use regular bookmarks in chrome on Android I thought I would try out Raindrop.io.  I installed it as an Opera(chrome based) extension in Windows, then installed the App on Android.  It works, but when launching from the bookmark in the Android App it seems like the browser becomes embedded in the App somehow.  The expected controls such as back and forward arrows disappear and all I have is the device Back Button.

Not really smooth.  If someone knows of a similar bookmark sharing mechanism that is better to use I would appreciate a heads up.

I haven't tried MSE myself but regular posters on several Windows Support Forums swear by it.  I just never got around to checking it out.  It can't be a total piece of crap because the regulars who praise it are no dummies.  If you have a pre W10 system you may want to download MSE.
It's not as much of a "MSE is super cool and catches everything" as it's a case of "Pretty much everything else has a high snake-oil factor, and is so hopelessly engineered that it creates more security problems than it fixes".

I believe that.  That's why I don't run any Real Time Shield(tm) type stuff.  I used SandBoxie for awhile but it became too small for the job imho.  Plus the author got pissed about some licensed copies he gave away being passed around.  So he set up the new license mechanism so he could kill your license by remote control.  Too much overkill for me.  I stopped updating when it would have meant changing to the new license scheme.

The scare mongering marketing scheme annoys me anyway.  That and the idea that if somebody pays a few hundred bucks for a "certificate" they must be trustworthy.  What a laugh.  Like make sure if you are ripped off it is by somebody who isn't broke.  I fail to see the logic.

One of the professors who teaches the Computer Repair Level 2 class I am fond of taking is very psyched on Avast AV.  You can totally legally create a bootable USB scanner after installing the trial version on a clean computer.  You can download Avast from Ninite

Step by step to create a bootable USB

The professor had an IT company back in the day.  He related that his company was paying some $6,000 odd per year subscription for a corporate wide license of Norton AV.  As the story goes, he kept encountering strange behavior on some of the workstations.  But the Norton scans all came up clean.  He consulted friends with their own IT companies and was told to scrap the Norton and create the bootable Avast thumb drive and scan the strange workstations.  Turns out the Avast detected dozens of malwares on the "clean" workstations and fixed them up.

I am not a big believer in AV period.  But when I do scan I use a free one with a good reputation.  Hmm, why does that remind me of a Dos Equis commercial?  :)

The law says that one cannot be charged if one does not possess the necessary capacity.

Hmm, I wonder if a "trans-sister" is someone who starts out like Bruce Jenner but ends up like Caitlyn?
Perhaps, in the case of a bipolar junction trans-sister.

I heard the porn industry, innovators that they are, were the first to demonstrate the "feel effect trans-sister."  :)

Opera 45.0.2552.453 Beta fixes video play memory leak.

I have found in the past that just playing an hour of video I could easily end up with 1/4 GB of cache.  If this is the memory leak they are referring to I am not certain.  But I have installed the beta to find out.  :)

Edit:  Note that after pressing the Download Button you are given several download options.  Supposedly the beta downloads, either 32 or 64 bit, have the video play memory leak fix.

Hmm, this reminds me of a temp job I had.  It was working for a large department store in a mall.  Back then The Gas Crisis(tm) was going on.  Some people got wood burning stoves to cut down on heating oil purchases.  Anyway, this one temp guy I worked with was taking brand new pallets and chucking them in the dumpster.  After work he retrieved them and put them in his vehicle.  He broke them up to burn in his stove.

The security in the department store got onto him.  They dismissed him saying that his behavior was absolutely unpalatable.

@ital2 I think the regular posters on 10 forums would agree with you afa not running everything out of the built in Admin account.  That would be like running as "root" all the time in Linux.   But I do not know the nature of the programs etc..

I am pretty confident they could muster better suggestions than I as they have had several years of experience running the various releases and builds of W10.  Also many of them are retired and have a support background.  They just like to keep a hand in trying to help out with problems.

If you find out anything please post back the results because I am sure a few readers here would be curious how things pan out.  And of course someone in this forum may have an insight or two.  :)
