That's great!  I have just spent twenty minutes trying to work out how to contact Quicken - their website is extremely frustrating!  Loads and loads of words, but not the ones I want to read, and no clear way to ask questions that aren't already answered there...

I'd like to know the answer to that question too, Shangnyun - did you find out?

(Slaps hand against forehead) Okay, that worked!  I hate Norton.  I remember now: when you switch it off, rather than assuming that you know what you want, it assumes you don't and only allows access to what has explicitly been granted access previously, blocking all else.  And even when it's not in memory it manages to keep that status quo.  Time to get some lunch now - 5.40pm!  Thanks, Mouser and Carol.

They are both enormous and were definitely the main cause of this machine running slowly - other than this odd not-able-to-update-or-access-via-ff problem, it's running much more quickly now.  Even uninstalling NIS is a mammoth task: it's taken about 20 minutes so far!  When I said disabled I meant: turned off all autostarting components and services and then rebooted.  As far as I can see, there is no trace of the program in memory or services - I'm checking using SysInternals Process Explorer and WinPatrol.

Uh, somethign I didn't say but really should have  :-[ :

Because the person whose computer I'm working on is unsure they want NOD, rather than uninstalling Norton Internet Security, I've gone through and disabled it.  This might be the problem...  I have removed all startup programs and disabled services, but it's likely the culprit nonetheless.  Uninstalling it now to see if that makes a difference.

No, nothing at all in FF, but in IE it's fine.  I installed Za and that's working okay - asked me for permission for FF and NOD and I created rules for both - so it's not the firewall blocking them.  But then can't download... Nor can Hostsman update its HOSTS list, nor TrojanJunter its defs.  Nor can I connect to LogMeIn in IE (did I already say this?)

Nah.  I uninstalled Kerio and still doesn't work... About to install ZA and see if that works.  No problem accessing DonationCoder, by the way...

I've switched Kerio off, but it's still happening.  Yep, constrained to 98... oh, and insane!

I've an odd situation: I've just installed FF and NOD32 on a machine, and although IE continues to be able to access the 'net straightforwardly, neither of these two new programs can...  I also installed Kerio 2.15 at the same time, but that doesn't seem to be the problem, because it makes no difference when that is switched off.  Any ideas why they might not be working?  The machine in running Win 98 SE2, on a network with a broadband connection - no proxy, no hardware firewall.

Living Room / CDs... :(
« Last post by m_s on October 18, 2005, 02:30 PM »
This morning I excitedly dug out two old cds I've not listened to in a few years - Brian Eno's 'Thursday Afternoon' and 'Music for Airports' - and all the stories are true: cds do deteriorate!  Both have oxidised or something, because there are plainly visible little holes in the silver, where I can see through to the other side.  These were the first cds I bought - 'Thursday Afternoon' was the very first, when it came out in 1985.  I heard something on the radio about the effective life of a cd likely being 20 years - this feels a little like the well-known thing about items breaking on the day their warranty ends!

I, uh, stumbled upon this in MacWorld's excellent guide to being a Firefox Power User (via Lifehacker): StumbleUpon.com

I've just been playing around with it a little this afternoon, and I've turned up some really wonderful websites.  If you don't know it, check it out!

I ran RedHat for about 6 months, and it took quite a lot of tweaking and fiddling about to get everything working just as I wanted.  I really liked it, and once I had it doing exactly what I wanted, it was great.  Then I bought a new laptop, and that shipped with Mandrake, which I was really happy about, but while I was installing it, it didn't recognise the wifi card, and the previous 6 months of tweaking flashed before my eyes, and I'm sorry to say I chickened out - went with XP.  When I go back to Linux at some point in the future (I think I will), I will probably start with Mandriva - which is what Mandrake is now renamed as...  There was a link on betanews.org about their new version a few days back.

My first was a Commore 64, back in OMG 1979!  I loved it, and when the first emulators came out a few years back, I downloaded several of the games I had back then - and they were as good as ever.  I remember the flashy screen as I loaded programs from cassette; I'd set them to load from tape and go run around outside for 30 minutes or so while they did so.  Wow, and now I get frustrated when I have to wait for 30 seconds...  I taught myself some basic machine language and used to write simple programs and - forgive me for I knew not what I did - crack games for my own use.   Ah, I'm coming over all Proustian...

Living Room / Re: Partitioning hard drive - any point?
« Last post by m_s on October 14, 2005, 02:11 PM »
That point about the swap file - I had heard that it makes little difference unless you're actually using a separate physical volume.  Is that wrong?

I just bought Backup4all, as I've been increasingly worried about my lack of backups - now I'm thinking of getting an external hard-drive and Acronis TrueImage (as recommended in the venerable DC review!).  And I think this kind of backup system is a good argument for keeping my documents separate (as they currently are).

I just read this interesting set of tips at Techyogurt (via Lifehacker): http://techyogurt.com/?p=12

I'm interested in his point 18, since I have heard it said often that partitioning makes things safer, but whenever I think about it, it doesn't really make sense since we're still talking about the same drive.  One of the commenters says something about it making reinstalling Windows easier, and that does make sense.  But is there any real benefit in partitioning?

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Registry Cleaning Software
« Last post by m_s on October 13, 2005, 08:38 AM »
I followed Mr Langa's advice: ran Easy Cleaner and then JV16 Powertools.  Lo!  I had problems.  I restored backup created by each program, and all is back as before.  I was using the lowest level of cleaning - sorry, forget what it's called, but the least aggressive setting...  I run CCleaner's 'Issues' module every month or so, and I think that's plenty for me.

For the sake on completeness: I uninstalled XAMPP, and that was obviously what was blocking the HOSTS files, because Hostsman can edit it again.  I tried it on another machine, and it didn't work there either - with a different security setup - so I don't think the problem is necessarily on my side.   I've put in a support question over at freehostia, because I don't understand why Textpattern isn't working on their side either...
