General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by PPLandry on March 24, 2008, 06:50 PM »
Wow... and I thought that this week-end would be quiet... Easter weekend... It's going to take me a couple hours just to catch up  :)

Randomly... the image issue:

Incomplete as many of you have noted. I believe that the current status is that images from web-pages can be drag-dropped onto the HTML pane and local images to sub-items of grid items. Other combinations don't work, namely:
- Web image to the grid
- Image to a main item of a grid
- Local image to the HTML pane

Also, there is no URL translation currently, so drag-dropped images retain their original URL.

Other issues are:
- HTML pane has no insert image function (must insert HTML code <img>)
- I incorrectly check the text content to decide if there is something to save, so if all you have is an image, then nothing is saved. That wil be fixed rapidly.

Not that any of this is particularly difficult to do, it is simply that it hasn't been done.

The HTML editor is incomplete in many ways, and this is one such way. I'm working on using Word as HTML editor. I also found an excellent MHT generator which should help resolve the image issue so common to HTML editors.

Finally, keep in mind that SQLNotes started as an Ecco replacement and the 2nd pane (HTML) has come later in the dev.

More to come later today after I put my near 5 year-old to bed

I know CSV is not ideal.

BTW, When importing into SN, you can save / recall your field mapping. So the first time it is longer because you need to do the field mapping, but after that, you simply open the mapping file and click .

BTW2. I just found a free component that read/writes OE WAB files. So it would be very very easy to implement it. If you want it, simply add it to Mantis.

PPLandry, are you planning to implement native thunderbird-outlook express contacts import export?
- You can use CVS format to do it right now
- I don't see why not, given some time
- Also, as shown in Mantis (http://mantis.sqlnot...s.net/view.php?id=40), an API will be published. This will allow for add-ons
- Finally, Microsoft Sync Framework has just entered CTP2. It may be the channel I'll use for syncing with other apps and devices. Too soon to tell, but I'm following it closely. Demo is impressive http://msdn2.microso...s/sync/bb821992.aspx (there was a video at one point, but I can't find it now: Demo showed it could sync contacts between Outlook, Vista contacts, Hotmail, PDA)

[edit] Does Thunderbird use the new SQLite database storage that some FF apps have started to use? If yes, it should be trivial to import it. SN can pull bibliographical info from Zotero this way...

OK, try these steps:

1- Open SN
2- File>New. give it a name
3- Open the Welcome Grid (View>Grids>Welcome) or toolbar. Does it work?
4- If yes, now do Create Grid (View>Grids>New Grid, a grid is like a sheet in Excel). Give it a name. Do you get a blank notepad ready to start writing?

(BTW, if you did not install the latest build, there was an issue with creating a grid before opening a database. This is now fixed)

Hope this helps. Keep me posted.

@superboyac,

You wrote in another thread:
>I predict that I will eventually move all of my contacts into SQLNotes.

Anything special missing right now (other than time?)

You can create as many contact fields as required, there is a dialer (which looks into parents to find #'s), e-mailer and custom forms.
Would a customizable cardview be the deciding thing ?
such as:

or:

You could use NetMeeting or MSN Messenger (or some other remote control tool) to achieve something like this

Ok, more progress, HTML editor could not be opened, ok, so what I did, was delete the new created files in sql folder (options.ini, settings.ini, and a file named dock and menu.

then when I started sql notes I did no longer have some docked um... things on the left (that said "feature reqests", "journal" etc). Then I made new file, and 'lo and behold, there was the grid and I could edit it and save it. no problems

so seems much like the html component is the culprit. Strange that I'm the only one experienceing it, though...
You can try an alternative registration tool:

Correct. There is some improvements to be done.

I work on a 1.5 GHz first generation Centrino, so I'll be able to easily determine aspects that can be optimized.

BTW, I'm a bit surprised, since it takes about that amount of time on my 4.5 year-old notebook (1 sec) to open a new grid as it does on your power-house... surprising isn't?

I actually read the doc. I can create the wikilinks tag. But I am not sure about how it works.
Checkout the links grid. Especially the examples in "Hyperlinks (in both in-cell and in rich-text pane)"

e.g. To link to item(s) with wikitag projSomiro:
This will open the Scratch grid with all items <a {projSomiro}> tagged as projSomiro</a> displayed

Can you be a little bit more precise?

Wiki links in the HTML pane has been disabled temporarly since it needs fixing.

In the grid:

From the doc.http://sqlnotes.wikispaces.com/Links:
-------------------
Hyperlinks can be added. Format is < a xxx>linkText < /a >
where xxx can be:
1- an itemID
2- a Field/folder enclosed in [ ]
3- a Wikitag. Wikitags are enclosed in { } and entered in the WikiTag field
4- href='AWebAddress'

If the linked item is in the grid, focus is moved to it. Otherwise or if the link returns more than 1 item, the scratchpad grid is opened with the linked item(s).
Examples can be found in the new template (File>New) in the Links grid
-----------------

Improvements to come:
1- Wiki link to an non-existing item will promt you if you want to automatically create the item
2- Selecting text, you'll be able to convert it a link to a new item containing the selected text
3- Re-enable Wiki links in the HTML pane
4- UI to create links

Basically, I want this to be as easy to use as other apps (wikipad, wikispace, etc)

The ksdhtmledit yahoo group is:

Kurt Senfer, the author, is very helpful. Perhaps he can help you register it.

You are sure that the HTML pane is not just collapsed ? Check around the window frame for a tab written HTML...

I unregistered the ks... componenent and was able to create a new file and edit it. Of course opening the HTML pane (F12) I got an error message on the status bar but the program worked as expected after that.  :-[

You can also try to manually unregister:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\regsvr32.exe "%1" /u

Developer's Corner / Re: Visual Basic .NET - Can I make a dynamic GUI?
« Last post by PPLandry on March 21, 2008, 06:33 PM »
I would have to look up how to do it in .net, but in plain old VB, your invisible control is a control array. So you simply do ControlName.add. This can help:
http://visualbasic.a.../bldykctrlarraya.htm

We're progressing. Try this:
  • Open SN
  • Close the HTML Pane
  • Close SN
  • Open SN
  • Do File>New
Can you open grids ? view / change data?

If yes, then the problems lies only with the HTML component.

I can definitely be done, I've done exactly that using VB3 15 years ago and it wasn't complicated to do...

[edit]
  • You basically put an invisible copy of every control type you want (textbox, commandbutton, radiobutton, etc)
  • When the user does the right thing, you programmatically copy the invisible one to a new visible one
  • You save the configuration to a text file. I used tab-delimited (now may be more convenient to use XML format)
  • On re-open, you re-create the controls based on this file
  • To switch between design and run modes, simply change the dragmode properties

If you want sample code, just ask.

I understand, however the installer basically does 3 things:
- Decompress the setup package
- Copy files
- Write to the registry

Nothing else...

Did you try re-boot ? Perhaps some file is locked...

This is the first report of an installing not making it through the above process. Please post it on the SQLNotes forum and we'll track it down.

(BTW I use Inno setup)

Yes, I'm using the installer. It stops at the Registration screen, and regsvr32.exe eats my CPU. I have to kill it.
PPLandry, I searched your forum for regsvr32.dll, but as you indicated, this only brought a problem installing on Linux to surface...
weird
regsvr32.dll is a windows utility to register components (to the registry). Perhaps you can try a registry repair tool such as regclean:

We had some installation problems a long time ago (last summer), in particular on Vista, but this has been resolved. I haven't heard of installation problems recently (except on Linux where it installs but doesn't run, it even works on Macs under Parallels)
295
But I haven't yet heard anything from anyone using SQL Notes that has clarified anything for me.
OK, how about these metaphors:

  • A very large Excel sheet where you can control which rows and columns are displayed. Multiple views of the same sheet. Making a change in one updates all others
  • A standard 2-pane outliner where the 1st pane (outline) is dynamically generated, not a static outline
  • Wikipad with wiki links in both the wiki content and in the wikiOutline
  • A database where you can add fields as easily as records or "Easy MSAccess" as superboyac once said
  • All this data is visible (live) by ODBC enabled applications (Word, Excel, Access)
  • Can pull data from on-line database for local browsing. If Mouser created a read-only account on DC MySQL server, you could have a local copy of whole DC content... 1 click refresh... wouldn't that be nice?
  • And the list goes on and on

I hope this helps. The free phone call would certainly help too. Anytime...

Very good suggestion superboyac. I also want to have a beginners and an advanced mode, with, in beginners, simplified menus and toolbars. There is just too much there for beginners.
297
I had exactly the same reaction Dormouse ... SQLNotes simply baffles me and I have tried it 3 or 4 times and ended up deleting it again. I also suspect it is going to cost big time when completed!
-Carol Haynes (March 21, 2008, 11:35 AM)
I'm the designer of SQLNotes, allow me to clarify a few things:
  • SQLNotes can be as complex or as simple as you want. As I get user feedback, each new version is easier to use. I agree that it is not an easy program to grasp (mostly since the data is clearly separated from the UI).
  • Special introductory price has been set to $49.99
  • Documentation is improving. Checkout the new step-by-step Getting started guide: http://sqlnotes.wiki....com/Getting+started

This mock-up picture represents quite well the SQLNotes philosophy:

You put your data in the box and then decide what you want displayed on each of the views (i.e. box sides). But remember, the data sits in the box, not on any of the views. So the same data can be viewed from many sides. Views include rich-text outlining grids, rich-text editing pane, properties pane with user-defined forms, pivot tables / charts and soon Calendar, Contact Cards and MindMaps

Developer's Corner / Does anyone have VB3 installed
« Last post by PPLandry on March 17, 2008, 09:21 AM »
I've got some code written years and years ago in VB3 and saved it in binary mode . I can't seem to find the diskettes for VB3 anywhere  :(

Does anyone have VB3 installed and could convert the source code from binary to text, so I can read it in VB6?
(Simply open the project and select "save as text".
