General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced

And, apparently there is a problem with a piece of software that I've never had a problem with before.

Rocksmith 2014 has worked fine for me since win 10 came out.  After the update, whenever I exit normally, it kills the video, and doesn't come back.  In order to get out of it, I have to either do a hard reboot, ctrl+alt+del and down arrow and enter to log out, or alt tab instead of exiting, and kill the process (that last one is what I'm going to do if it works).

And I'm not the only one...

You accuse me for not supplying information, but the truth is that I don't have any other information to supply apart from my first post in this thread. I just need a phone that will work in UK, I am not tech expert to have special requirements like to be able to connect to 4G+ network in Kuala Lumpur or whatever.

Also, you accuse me that I did no research, while the truth is I did but the information is scarcely available, not offficial and in various forums here and there. I did research, I did find the trustedreviews review, which is a mainstream reliable source.

And I don't ask for something exotic, just the differences of the models in few words, which if someone knows can mention in few seconds.
And to be honest, I don't find any big price differences between the models so I would go for the most feature rich anyway.

Can we get away from the accuse?  That's starting to get a bit aggressive, and I don't think that anyone is accusing- just stating the obvious from what's been going on, and trying to help to get things on a more even keel.

I think that if you had presented that, and presented where you had looked, and what you were confused about, it would have become apparent that you tried.  And I think that's the main thing-to give a best effort at putting your mind to the problem, and making use of the information given.

And to counter a bit:

You want me to tell you whether this is the best phone for your usage patterns and needs and whether or not you will love or hate MIUI?

That's the part that rubbed people the wrong way.  You've been given the information- more than enough information to make your own decision.  No one here is going to make that for you.  It's a risk.  But a risk that we all take, based on the best information we can find.  Give a man a fish, and all...

oh don't be so harsh
I am not talking about personal preferences here, I am talking about objective advantages and disadvantages!

It's not objective.  That's the point... it's subjective.  Do a bit of research and decide for yourself which best fits your personal needs.

This is the textbook that I used for my kids - https://www.manning....world-second-edition

It was Python, which is useful in the long term.

They liked Hackety Hack too, which uses Ruby, so has the advantage of being useful.

There are several others, but the languages are not ones that are useful in the real world.

Here are a couple of sites with several resources:
https://www.fractusl...rogramming-for-kids/
http://www.edutopia....s-parents-matt-davis

But I really found that my kids weren't interested in it (my daughter likes writing better, and my son is more hands-on, so not a good fit for either), though they did enjoy a camp at a local computer 4 kids type workshop.  So that's what I recommend - finding something local if it's available that they can interact with.  There are more out there than you might think.

HTH!

Yeah, annoyed me too but it did say that it will check to see if the computer is being used if outside that 12 hour window.

Then, when it started, it had removed/blocked my displayfusion.  And put up some BS FUD about it might damage my computer.

I didn't get that, DF continued to work without a problem, ClassicShell upgraded itself to cope with the new updates.

I was actually able to get it to run.  And the thing that bothered me about the check for activity, is that it takes 90 mins+ to install.  Just because I went upstairs to get coffee, I wouldn't be ready to install.

And they installed skype, and made it front and center.

So, today I had my first real reservations about my choice to upgrade.  Microsoft doesn't really think things through.

They have that anniversary update.  So I tried to set my working hours, and it wouldn't let me give it a window of more than 12 hours, even though I have need of my computer for longer than that.  I got pissed, and figured I'd figure it out when I got back.  And found that it had updated.  They apparently removed the setting where you can set it to not do updates or anything unless you ask.  Then, when it started, it had removed/blocked my displayfusion.  And put up some BS FUD about it might damage my computer.  Do they not even realize that people want control of their computer and how they use it?  Or do they just not care.  I was OK with the auto update stuff when they let me put the control of them asking me when I wanted to do it.  But this isn't cool.

Well, I actually purchased off of eBay.  Didn't really mean to, but I set up a few low bids on Gixen, and got one of them.  $635 for the i5/4GB New.  What made me even bid was the fact that I found out you can purchase a warranty.  So I'm waiting to make sure it's in the advertised condition, and then I'll buy that.  Maybe.

Anyone have any opinions one way or the other?  It would be either squaretrade or warrantech.

Is it only in PMs?  Or does the same thing happen inline in posts?

And the official section is here: https://www.donation...index.php?board=21.0

But I guess mouser will move it if it is a big deal...

Look at this way, if I post a question on DC, if unclear or poorly formatted mouser is not editing it. There is no reason he should. SE, SO are not doing anything better or revolutionary by doing it, peer reviewed or otherwise.

The particular case that you're using to form your opinion, i.e. the question is unclear, they will vote to close.  Only in very specific instances is the text of the question edited.  Most of the edits are for tags.  It's just that it shows "edited" that is sometimes misleading.  We do the same here in regards to moderation.  Sometimes people put questions or things in the wrong place.  And they're moved, and a redirect is placed.  They don't have separate forums in SE.  They have tags for the same reason.  And most edits are for those.

The 'funniest' thing abut SO type sites is the ability of some to edit your question. Unless all those editors have super powers to clarify my dumb way of asking then sorry No. Yes I know some of the edits are for formatting but still that editing power is pointless at best imo.

It's actually not, and you see that once you can look from the other side.  It's not free-form editing, and the alternative, which is used a lot, is to put the question on hold/close the question.  That's what's used if there is a question of intent.  In most cases, when it says that the question was edited, it is because of formatting or tags.  And it's not just editing- the edits are peer reviewed.  And there is a strict rule of not changing intent unless you're the author.  It works, at least on the two SE sites that I have a high enough reputation to be a part of that side of things.

^ Yeah, I'm on a few of the SE sites.  Some are more welcoming and easier to get into than others it appears.  SO is just too overwhelming, and has way too much traffic flow for me to ever become truly comfortable doing anything but searching there.

and though Reddit isn't really a forum, I participate in /r/mk fairly regularly.

What is that?

I get a 404 when I try it out. Some sort of exclusive club, I guess. :P

Yes... just used to typing /r/mk, but it's /r/mechanicalkeyboards

I don't trust alibaba to buy from there, I used in the past a similar chinese bullsht called ioffer or something and I lost my money! absolutely no protection or customer support!

I haven't had any problems.  Did you look at the seller reviews?  And you can initiate a dispute- they have a process.  And I used it in one case, and it worked.

My Surface 3 is an Atom, with 4B of RAM. It does okay with browsing and Plex playback.
That is pretty much all I used it for.

I hope to use my Surface 4 as a desktop replacement. I am not a coder, gamer, nor graphic artist.
Still, given there is no way to easily upgrade I went with the i5 with 8GB of RAM as a good middle ground.
I already notice less battery life than with the Atom, the i7 just wasn't right for my new situation.

Given the prices, used at least, the i5 seems to be a good middle ground. Also in that it comes with the 8GB of RAM.

They actually have an i5 that's 4GB of RAM.  The only concern I have buying off of ebay is the lack of any sort of safety net other than the manufacturer's warranty.

I've had the same experience. But I've been waiting a while, and have seen nothing official, so I think I'm going to take my chances.

That's how it works. It's not a week after you first think about ordering it. It's a week after you actually do order it. :D

I think I've decided to go with the SP4.  Now I'm just trying to decide between the m3 and the i5.  So far, opinions seem mixed on which one to get.

Easily one of the best DC threads ever :)
ADS looks awesome!
This really makes me want to fix the old luggable I have laying around so we can play this in all it's original glory :)

Does bring back memories!  I kept my old Apple around just so I could look at my old projects for the longest time.  I finally got rid of it when my disks that had my old work on it were stolen.  But it was very good that you were able to recover your work!

I simply don’t have the time now to spend working around Microsoft’s debugging process for Win 10. When Microsoft gets their act together and things stabilize, I will consider upgrading the OS, but not before.

Yup. Well put. Same here.

Isn't that the same as for any organization?  I don't ever remember one of my organizations being on the cutting edge of OS upgrades, ever.
