Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR v2.00.01 ALPHA PREVIEW Release

That reason is exactly why I have been pressuring mouser to put the folder searching feature into 2.0!!!! Good to see I am not the only one who thought of this :)

Find And Run Robot / Re: Text recognition in any application for FARR
« Last post by Josh on December 20, 2006, 12:08 AM »
I do think it will impact it, however, there could be an addon module that might be enabled in FARR. That way, if you want it, you can download said addin module and enable it in the options dialog.

Find And Run Robot / Text recognition in any application for FARR
« Last post by Josh on December 19, 2006, 11:23 PM »
I would like to suggest a feature similar to Direct Access (www.nagarsoft.com) and similar apps. The idea is that you can be in any application and have keywords typed that are recognized by FARR and when one is recognized, a hotkey prompt is displayed asking you to press a select keystroke to launch said keyword. Pressing that key launches the process/file associated with the keyword.

This has proven most useful and I think would be a great addition. What do you all think?

General Software Discussion / Re: moral behaviour in the shareware industry
« Last post by Josh on December 18, 2006, 01:12 PM »
Thats just it, with software there is no real way to "return it". Yes, you can return a physical medium, however, you could still have a copy of the program along with the serial number. The serial number will still work (unless server validation is required, which isnt totally mainstream yet) and you can continue using it for as long as the current serial hashing algorithm works.

This is why most software companies wont offer a refund and offer you a 30 day trial of their software. Users should check out the program, its support options, and whether the program is in active development still. I am all for the "If it works dont fix it" policy, however, a company should still exist and its developers show an interest in improving it if a way is found to improve it, however, some communities would have you believe a program that still works that was made in 02 is just as good as one that does what the 02 product does and is under more active development.

For now, we'll take enthusiastic reviews with a grain of salt... unless it's Zaine Ridling talking about XYplorer or me about Opera ;D

Or zaine talking about anything he likes ;-)

What we need is a top 10 most accurate portayal of technology list.

Also, why did the matrix not make the list? The idea that they shove a metal rod which is about half a foot in length into the back of your skull is laughable. How in the hell would they have implanted that without damaging the brain or nervous system/cerebelum which is near that area?

While I agree with most, how can war games be on the "Worst" list? It is by far, one of the more accurate accounts of technology at its time. While the problem I have with it is the fact that back in the day you couldnt use the old style modem like he did (auto-dial, since you had to manually establish the call first and then put it on the receiver), it was fairly accurate.

Yeay for folder finding. Hopefully this works similar to the windows run dialog, in which you can type out the path to a file or folder, and have it appear as a dropdown list of potential matches as you type. WOOHOO!!!!

Living Room / Re: Resolution: an open source desktop in 2007?
« Last post by Josh on December 13, 2006, 03:59 PM »
Honestly, I am not switching to a niche OS when what I am using now works well and offers, generally, higher quality and better designed programs than the alternative does.

While linux is free, and most of its software is too, that comes at the cost of quality and support. Yes, I can go to various forums for support, however, if no one knows, I am SOL on my problem and am left to my own devices to figure it out. I also would be giving up the polish that I am used to in a windows app. With linux, most of the GUI's feel tacked on and like an after-thought.

Switching to another OS, just because, to me is like these people who switch their documents to this new ODF format for no other reason than to spite Microsoft. Again, the "If the current environment works, why switch?" logic comes into play.

Living Room / Re: Best Free and Pay FTP Client
« Last post by Josh on December 13, 2006, 12:17 AM »
For payware FTP servers, I prefer g6ftp server. Been a client of theirs since 1997 back before BP bought out their original offering, and got a free upgrade to v3 which now works like a charm and has even more functionality. For freeware, I cant say as I've never used anything besides G6.

Now, for the topic (which contradicts your post), the best freeware ftp client, in my opinion, is filezilla and the best payware one USED to be leapftp, but that was left to stagnate so now I would have to say SmartFTP.

I would like to see more forums that allow discussion that isnt centralized around the coder. Yes, this is donationCODER, but, as pointed out above, there is such a vast amount of knowledge here that its a shamre that we are limited to the living room to discuss various topics. Such things could include hardware, gaming, software, etc. This could all be under one specific forum with subforums underneath.

Living Room / Re: Demise of the trackball? What's the alternative?
« Last post by Josh on November 29, 2006, 01:16 PM »
What I want is a trackball with the side scroll option, back/forward buttons and a SMOOTH scroll wheel (You know, instead of feeling like a "click" when scrolling on it). But, it seems, no one wants a trackball. I find the mouse awkward for gaming and the trackball makes it so much easier. I love my trackball explorer from MS, but I am on my second one and dont feel like buying a new one because, knowing my luck, someone WILL release a new one with the features I want RIGHT AFTER I buy it. BRING BACK MORE TRACKBALLS!!!!

General Software Discussion / Anti-spam utility that supports IMAP plus...
« Last post by Josh on November 22, 2006, 01:14 PM »
I am looking for an anti-spam utility which supports the following:

Greylisting
IMAP Filtration of messages
Rule based filtering
Whitelist/blacklist (based on address book entries)
Thunderbird support.

The REQUIRED features are Rule based, white/blacklisting and IMAP filtration (t-bird). Greylisting would be nice, but I dont know of a client-side solution which supports this.

Can anyone recommend any solutions?

Living Room / The worlds most high tech urinal
« Last post by Josh on November 19, 2006, 09:57 AM »
In an effort to handle its nighttime public urination problem, Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is considering installing urinals that disappear below street level during the day. Unlike the automated, self-cleaning toilets planned for Toronto and Vancouver, which are enclosed booths with doors that that automatically open after a set time period, the Urilift system is a two-meter high stainless steel cylinder with three alcoves, each with a urinal, and no doors.
