Hi Eddie,

This one intrigues me because it's like a wildcard version of the old game Ataxx, one of only 10 90's era games I really liked. In that one, you could only move close to your existing "spiders", where your game lets you place them anywhere. I have no idea what that does to the strategy!

The pity is that there's no AI to play against!  :(

YouPorn (YP in German is really obscene!)
That...is the best thing I have heard all goddamn day!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I have to admit it was meant as a joke, so I'm very pleased it finally got a taker!

You just know you send a couple of us scurrying into NSFW corners of the web!  :o  :D

Heh yeah, or if they miscalculate the math, it could go slamming into the earth and wipe us out! Weren't they sometimes saying it was an asteroid that killed the dinos? I know! Let's find one and make it approach earth 267 times per year! Oh wait - so THAT's what the Mayans meant on why the world ended!  :D

Okay, my turn to jump into the fray.

"Travel Soothing Sound Machine with Alarm Clock".

Now let's get the "available for sale somewhere".
http://www.buzzillio...-alarm-clock-reviews
Buzzillions seems to suggest it's at least available on Ebay. However the signature seller used to be Radio Shack, though they are now out of stock.

For me at least, I am recommending it in reverse of the purported reason it was sold. Play with the cute little sound effects, sure. But it's the best travel alarm clock "I have seen, and may ever see".

Travel Soothing Sound Machine.jpg

Basically, it's got the essential features all laid out so clearly you wonder why 30 years of other clock makers couldn't do it. Huge clock numerals. Big button to make the light come on in the dark for 7 seconds. I'm not a Snooze Guy but it's also the snooze button. BOTH the "date" and the "day" in half size font below that. 1/4/2012 AND Fri.

It folds up really secure so no one drop will bounce it in half.

And then the feature that made it priceless for me: A thermometer. Absolutely brilliant. It's prob got a margin of error a couple of degrees, but it's close enough. Whether in one job where the company hobby was fiddling with the thermostat, or the funky heating in my building, no more guessing why you are hot or cold. Just look at your clock.

Yeah, *eventually* the contacts will wear out a little. Because I'd not easily like a clock this much for a long time, I bought about 6 of them! One became a gift. I think I still somewhere have my last spare in the stuff I just moved.

By the time I've actually paid for a few things, I usually pick pretty well. But in the trial/free dept it happens to me all the time! I was just posting a few weeks ago how I removed about 100 unused programs from my machine after they had all just showed up for random reasons at the time.

A remark from Softpedia:

"Users are advised to pay attention while installing this ad-supported application:

· Includes third-party components not necessarily related to the program's functionality, but intended to generate income for the developer"

For me for some time now MSE runs really heavily at boot up, enough so that I am starting to think about replacing it. There was a report elsewhere with the generally disturbed tone that AV isn't as good as most people hope it is, remarking on some delays for it to pick up brand new malware. MSE scored straight in the middle of their tests, with a couple of (newer?) companies I hadn't heard of scoring higher.

Unless it's just really good at background protection, I can sorta count the number of MSE blocking events on one hand all last year.

Well, what I found this year was that working on something way in advance (and not specifically for NANY) helped.  Usually it's a scramble at the last minute, and it still was as I was trying to get my other pledge done.  But I like to pledge rather than just show up so that it gives sort of a head count.

Mouser is pondering to take the Last Minute Scramble part out of it, and let it be more of a year long process. As seductive as the calendar New Year is, it also just happens to be the busiest holiday month which can't help scheduling dev time on the app.

^^ It's not like ads really serve anyone except the advertisers. I think it was Tinman that pointed out that there is no truth in advertising. I don't particularly have all that much sympathy for purely ad supported businesses. If the product were that good, people would simply pay for it. There are other ways to make money without ads. Maybe they should stop whining and start trying to think about their business.

Naw, the world is too complicated for just paying for stuff anymore, because modern internet culture is based on a huge base of everyone casually using tons of offerings. Using people's time is a different metric than using people's money. For example the "experts" can use adblock etc, but otherwise they're not out $10 every month for each of 1000 different things. (Ever notice how Pre-2005ish "shareware" used to be really high like $29.99 to register each silly little utility?) Then there are tons of other concerns about the structure of making payments, "hidden fees" and more. Blecch.

I'll point to the abysmal quality of some of the iPhone apps in the free vs paid versions.

So, it's just a big messy topic with no easy answers.

They also have a version with colours. But then you will first need to click "Other software" and scroll some more, not knowing what you are looking for! Really a bizarre design!

Did they take it down? I don't see it at all, not from a simple look, or in View-Source, or a web search in their domain. It seems only to be hosted by those external download sites.

Or you can just send your DonationCredits to the site fund account and we will use that for mugs and then distribute the rest to nany participants.

Thank you everyone who helped with NANY this year (special thanks to Hally for the great 2013 mug image this year)!

I'm happy with Cody wallpapers, so that's why I make it even easier and just donate my mug funds to the general fund!

N.A.N.Y. 2013 / Re: NANY 2013 Release Find Long Names
« Last post by TaoPhoenix on January 02, 2013, 04:27 PM »
I researched the file size problem and found the size varies !!! from xp to others.
It is about 255 more or less so i cannot be sure ,and no body is, on the FORMAL file size,
Even the name or extension changes from one window to the other.
As for that i have given all 3 section file dir name and extension to be variable.
A good number will be <250.

Hallo!

I just got around to downloading this now that nany is official because I've had the same types of problems. Let's just say that problems arise on XP whe (something) exceeds about 250 characters. If this includes combined path and filename, I have busted over it quite often! It's real easy for me to have (especially a web page file!) something like:

C:\Documents and Settings\user.NONE-QsgRDDpdfk465\Desktop\Humor\2012\SillyHumor\StuffIReallyShouldHaveDeleted\DonationCoder\StuffToAnnoyMembers\Renegade\Rants\Copyright\PoliceAbuse\ByState\RantOnTXPoliceAndMobileData\TexasPolice_have_decided_that_they_can_do_random_new_obnoxious_things_in_the_name_of_border_control.html

It happily saves like that from the remote news site, then Windows throws a snit fit later when you try to delete it!

So LongNames could be fun!

Another Copyright Rant:

aka Irish Newspapers decided linking to a story was copyright infringement and wanted €300 (I had to copy and paste that symbol!) for a single link.

I'll just open this with a quick link to Slashdot's version of the news, without repeating all their links etc.
Antivirus Software Performs Poorly Against New Threats
http://it.slashdot.o...-against-new-threats

The main report is here:

My initial remark is that Microsoft is noted at the top of the "market share" list, yet as they are a little unemphasized in the detailed reporting charts.

« Last post by TaoPhoenix on January 02, 2013, 08:11 AM »
At the end of the day it makes me wonder what the point is - Windows 8 out of the box drives me mad and Windows 8 with Start8 and a fix to send me to the desktop is just Windows 7.

Judging by some of the articles I read over Xmas about Win8 sales it looks like MS is having some problems convincing anyone this is more than another Vista fiasco.

Heh Carol,
Put cynically with old school memes,
"We Are Microsoft of Borg. We do not care if Win8 drives you mad. Smart old timer customer are not our market (this year!) We are pushing some obscure tablet-based agenda on newer users that we can assimilate. Resistance is futile." (Until they inject a nano-virus of some common sense and put it all back next year for Windows Blue!)

The simple reg hack still work for me..

Just so I can learn about a concept, done the long way, isn't there a 1 click button that goes to the desktop from the start screen? So wouldn't one of our famous snacks just run at boot-up which silently does that? It feels like an alt. for people like me who think that hard registry entries might be a little too aggressive. (In the sense that if you don't keep a list, maybe you get silent bugs from something else years later that relies on the factory registry setting.)
