I want to start a little thread here to bring to light, all those nasty little advertisements that fool the average (and sometimes even the more tech savvy) into clicking on pages.

Firstly, they take the notice away from the reason your on the page in question, but also...What is the point?  If they are on PPC (Pay-Per-Click) or even PPI (Pay-Per-Impression) then the originator is paying money to drive traffic, to his or her website, through bad techniques, for which people are simply going to navigate away!

What's worse, is that, if there where off-line advertisements, they would be reported, and be removed due to 'False Advertising' laws...yet nothing is done about it on the Internet.

Lets get started!


1. The "Download Now" Trick

This trick, is #1 on my BAD move list, and I would love to see it's removal from the entire internet...

Usually put where you would expect to find a legitimate download link.

2. The "You wasn't paying attention" trick:

Now, I some-what agree, that with this one, you should have been paying more attention...but whats the bet, that 50% of people see this, and use the one on the right, before they notice the small text link to the REAL download?

Use's a slight psychological trick, to fool users into clicking that, instead of what they actually wanted.

Just gonna add those 2 for now.

Feel free to add one's you think should also be removed!

Finished Programs / DONE: Simulate keystrokes to scalable BPM

Anybody willing to code the following:

It would need to simulate key strokes, and send them to the active window, at a specific BPM

For instance, I would want to send the following keystrokes, to the active window:

They would be sent at the rate of 128 BPM (In this respect, for the left hand segment of Rufus Wainwright - Hallelujah)

If possible, I would like to also be able to set the program to be able to loop X times, then follow with a new set of orders (so looping that 4 times, then sending the next set of keys to the active window) - It would send each set, a designated number of times.

It should also be able to send multiple strokes at once, so if I wanted to send B Q E at the same time, it would do (at EXACTLY the same time)

BPM is hugely important in this, as its going to be used in conjunction with a Virtual MIDI Piano, So I would obviously want to be able to set a specific BPM for each song.

I know I'm pushing my luck, but I would also be able to set "BPM Markers" within the keymap file, so if it plays X at Y BPM, for N number of times, it could then also change BPM

As an extension (yay, more options), I would also be able to designate shortcuts to be sent to the active window (which will in-turn, change the transposition, the octave etc) (These are set by the MIDI Piano software itself)

IE

*128 4 (<--- signifies, 128 BPM, Repeat 4 times)

It would be cool if those shortcuts are all able to be chosen and changed at any point using this softwares control menu, so I can add/remove shortcuts, or change stuff around to make life easier.

If Sol explodes I just hope it's during the day.  The bright light in contrast with the night sky could produce a hell of a lot of eye strain.

You see, thats the thing right there...There will be NO night sky while its happening, it will act as a second sun, causing 100% daylight for 24 hours a day, for who knows how long lol.

The source I had, didn't mention anything about impending doom, in-fact, quite the opposite, it stated that we would be blasted with particles that will cause us no harm what-so-ever, and will only cause the double sun, and perhaps no daylight for a little while.

Gawd knows though...it's hard to find a reliable source for bloody anything now-a-days lol

On the same note as this, has anybody heard about the one thats going to supernova any moment (They said 2012).

This isn't going to cause any hard to us, but they said it could have a couple of strange effects:

• If it happens, it will be so bright as to cause a temporary "Second Sun"
• Due to said "Second Sun" we may be in complete daytime for several months.

Two suns...wow...Its gonna be worth every moment of daylight just to be able to say we saw that...alien landscapes in our own skies, how cool would that be!

(PS: Theres also the chance it might not happen for another 10,000 years, so don't get too excited )

I’m a writer at CNET and Download.com, and personally I’ve been getting a lot of feedback on the Download.com Installer, including but not limited to Mouser and I emailing directly. (We've spoken a few times over the years.) I had absolutely nothing to do with the development or approval of the installer, but I wanted to assure you that I’ve been forwarding on your complaints to the appropriate people.

I have no news of changes being made to the installer as of yet, but I can assure you that the people in charge of it are listening to your complaints and are strongly considering options for improving the experience. I can’t say whether the installer will ever go away because CNET is seeing a much higher download completion rate than before it was in use. I have not been provided with numbers to back this up, yet. However, your feedback does appear to be reaching its target.

In the meantime, if you’re a developer and would like your software to be excluded from the installer, you can send a request for exclusion here: [email protected]. No requests have been denied so far, to the best of my knowledge.

If you’re a Download.com reader, logging into your CNET account (at the top right corner of the page) will give you a text link on the download page that allows you to directly download the program you want, bypassing the installer. The link appears just below the green Download.com icon, and reads, “Direct Download Link.”

The most visible exploding star in a generation will be visible in skies above Britain within a fortnight, Oxford University astronomers have announced.

The supernova, triggered by the collapse of a star 21 million light years away from Earth, began on Tuesday and could soon be bright enough to see through a pair of binoculars.

 The cosmic event, observed by Oxford scientists and American colleagues, is one of the closest stellar explosions to Earth since 1987, and is the nearest example of its type to be seen from Earth in 40 years.

 The rare "type 1a" supernova – an event where a star explodes, then sucks up the energy from another nearby star and is reborn – happened in the Pinwheel Galaxy, located in the Great Bear constellation.

 It is of particular interest to scientists because type 1a supernovae can be used to measure the size and age of the universe.

 The supernova, dubbed PTF11kly, is close enough that astronomers will be able to study it in unprecedented detail, and Nasa announced it would tear up the Hubble telescope's work schedule to study the phenomenon from Saturday.

For the first three weeks after the explosion, the supernova will burn with the brightness of more than a billion Suns, but experts warned that it would still be difficult for the general public to locate in the night sky.

 Dr Mark Sullivan, who led the Oxford team, said: "The best time to see this exploding star will be just after evening twilight in the Northern hemisphere in a week or so's time ... You'll need dark skies and a good pair of binoculars, although a small telescope would be even better."

 Tom Boles, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Association, added: "Most amateur astronomers detect supernovas using electronic sensors, so to be able to see one at all is tremendous and to be able to see it using binoculars is pretty much unprecedented.

 "To find it will be relatively easy if you know where to look, but someone who has not done it before will probably fail because you really need to know where the Pinwheel Galaxy is, and even then it will not appear that bright."

 The discovery of the giant explosion just hours after it took place means astronomers will also get a rare chance to study the outer layers of the blast, which contain unburnt sections of the star.

 Prof Andy Howell of the University of California Santa Barbara, one of the team who made the find, said: "We caught this supernova earlier than we’ve ever discovered a supernova of this type.

 "On Tuesday, it wasn’t there. Then, on Wednesday, boom! There it was -caught within hours of the explosion. As soon as I saw the discovery image I knew we were onto something big.

 “We are finding new clues to solving the mystery of the origin of these supernovae that has perplexed us for 70 years. Despite looking at thousands of supernovae, I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

Okay, I've bought the iPad Keypad Pro app and a few of the ready made button templates... but, I can't bring myself to try it. I may test it out over the weekend just to see how well it works - I've decided I just don't like the idea of having to keep an iPad next to my keyboard just in case I want to use some fancy button shortcuts.

Don't get me wrong, I do want some convenient fancy button shortcuts that are there whenever I need them; an iPad just doesn't fit those requirements.

So, I'm going to get a mini touchscreen and try Ath's WinButtons. It will be in a week or two from now that I get the touchscreen (unless I can't resist getting it sooner)...

Can you use the iPad as a Tablet of sorts on which you can actually draw directly on the iPads screen, and see what your doing (rather than typical tablets where your drawing on your desk, and staring at the PC screen)

Just a quick rant about how full of Adverts youtube videos are becoming.

Seriously, I just watched a 2 minute video clip and was having to keep clicking those annoying as hell "close" buttons that are so small, you miss half the video trying to aim on them...if you miss, your taken to the spam site, and when you finally hit the damn X, the video has finished.

Its driving me mental and I'm now in the process of finding a good alternative to youtube that doesn't drive you absolutely mental.

I am sorry to say that I abandoned the "You Have Files" NANY 2012 pledge, as I found that many similar exist and no point in making the same.

But do not worry, I am testing a totally different App right now, and may be this will prove more useful that the above. Hope to make a beta in 1/2 weeks.

It seems I was overly optimistic in predicting that the outrage over this would force cnet to immediately stop this practice

I'm not sure what we can do to put a top to this other than continuing to express outrage everywhere we can and demand that our software is removed from CNet's services, and cause enough heat that CNet realizes how badly their reputation is going to be damaged if they do not reverse course.

The response to my email to them telling them to remove all donationcoder software was to tell me to purchase their premium service if i wanted to remove their bundled installer crap.  In other words this is one big extortion racket.
