Ability to configure the length of the pop-up menu preview.
i believe you can do this now -- see quick pop up options.

I would prefer the main window appearing on a double click of the icon.
agreed, good idea.

* Handle images as well as text!
long desired, as well as richedit, etc.  im thinking on this; i have always intended to, and i will make it an option, i just have to figure out where to put this in my todolist priority since its not something i currently use myself.

Handle files copied to clipboard
hmm interesting; hadn't thought of that before.

nitrix-ud, yes, i will be adding this actually, i think its a good idea.

Alex (www.3form.org) has convinced me to join with him in working on this a little since both of us have backgrounds in machine learning.

I have my doubts about the possibilities of winning this but it seems an interesting challenge and worth a little bit of time playing with it.  I'm happy to talk with anyone in the donationcoder irc channel (#donationcoder on efnet, or hit the chat button aboce) who thinks they might also want to try entering.

this reminds me that i really want to add something like member-website of the month/week, in a little box somewhere, so we can get to know each other's websites..

Before this thread gets off too much in anti-mac territory, i have to say i think there are great things about the stuff apple has done regarding OSX, and i think i agree with a lot of what tomos said.  apple should feel good about their focus on making things work smoothly and making working with the computer a smoother experience.  and i think OSX has brought a lot of serious people to the apple platform and was a great idea.  make no mistake there are some serious power users working with macs.  i'm just not thrilled with these commercials.
27082
Don't get me wrong, i do appreciate the value of having a stable system with a core line of polished "official" programs, or appreciate that there is a lot of crap out there, or appreciate that osx with its *nix base gives you access to a ton of software.  It's more that i notice how much mac's seem  to be marketed to people who don't want to get involved in installing software, configuring, etc.  to each his own i guess.
27083
Sorry it took so long but i've added the traditional chinese flag to the translation buttons on the dc pages.

The latest mac vs. pc commercial touches on something that i really think distinguishes the mac culture from windows/pc culture, and may touch a nerve with some of us real software lovers.

Screenshot - 4_19_2007 , 1_04_40 AM_thumb.png

Here's the video: http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=1EbCyibkNB0

Basically the pc is "bloated from all the trial software he has installed", while the mac "comes with all the software you need".

Am i the only one who gets a real and satisfying enjoyment out of trying new software?  for some of us, it's this vast world of independent small software development and all the experimentation we can do trying new software that makes the pc/windows platform so fun.
27085
wow that's really weird sri..  let's try to figure it out on irc rather than in this thread but it sure sounds like a bug; the SAP related alias you have sounds like it might be causing the problem.. try examining the alias or changing it and see if you can discover what is making the bug happen. definitely looks like a bug!

General Software Discussion / Re: RANT: High Software Prices!
« Last post by mouser on April 18, 2007, 10:02 AM »
This discussion about photoshop has got me thinking more about some of my feelings on these high end programs.  I sometimes work with academic software, which has similar insane pricing schemes (go price matlabl).

Part of what makes people turn to piracy is when a company prices its products for one rich market, and prices it out of range of normal people, for the sole purpose of keeping the people who can afford it from paying less.

In other words, imagine the case of photoshop.  Ideally, as long as they don't have to provide you with support, they aren't negatively effected if 30,000 high schoolers have pirated copies of photoshop and learn how to use it.  In fact it helps them by establishing a more dominant user base and trained users who may eventually buy the program.  But they can't "officially" give out those copies of photoshop or charge $5 for them, because they need to be able to charge the pros $500 for it.  So we are left in this strange situation where companies are officially fighting to keep the program out of the hands of people who can't afford it, just so they can extract high dollars out of the people who can.  This is the kind of thing that makes me long for the day when we can all pay what we think a program is worth to us (i know it's not going to happen im just saying).

in general i guess i evaluate companies and get a feeling for if i think they are trying to jack up their prices and update charges in order to maximize profits with no real "love" of their customers.  i want to support companies which balance making a profit with having happy users.  show me a company trying to bleed their users dry to squeeze the last drop of potential profits, and i'll show you a company whose users are looking for an excuse to jump ship.

i really need to improve the autohiding features of LBC, and i do plan to make it toggle visibility with a hot key so that should help.

im not sure im completely following all of your requests:

Maybe if I could add a text description with the main menu Icon
could you explain what you mean?

Finally, if I could drag my application and have LBC take the path, the icon and the name, THAT would be amazing.
again, im not sure what you mean -- you can certainly drag items ONTO lbc and lbc buttons.

Looks fun.

Note: my clipboard help+spell program includes special formatting dialogs that can auto strip this stuff for you as you paste:

You can design your own formatting operations and then create menu items for them in the quick pop-up menu so that they are only a hotkey  away.  Web page: https://www.donation...ipboardhelpandspell/

#1: what warbird said (OR you can use function keys OR you can configure FARR to launch on number key press OR you can use numpad).
#2: if you make an alias with the 5 urls, then you can type the alias and hit Ctrl+Alt+Enter to launch all.

If people are interested i could add a flag to each alias to let you say that these should all launch as a group by default.

good idea -- putting it on todo list.

Living Room / Scott Karp's Latest Essay on Web2.0 Flaws..
« Last post by mouser on April 17, 2007, 01:02 AM »
Here's the latest essay from the website Publishing 2.0. on the web2.0 hype and the problems inherent with such a fast moving hyper-distributing content driven system..  I tend to agree with his points (see my post on how digg gets everything backwards)..

In an open Web 2.0 system, with a randomly chosen group, it’s impossible to generate anything other than arbitrary results. Web 2.0 glorifies the “social,” but in an open system, social behavior becomes “monkey see, monkey do.”

All of a sudden it’s crystal clear what Web 2.0 really is — the greatest platform ever for harnessing randomly imitative social behavior. Before Web 2.0, achieving utterly arbitrary results took time and effort. Now, with platforms like Digg, we can get nowhere in a fraction of the time it used to take.

Mircryption / Re: mircryption and on text scripts
« Last post by mouser on April 16, 2007, 07:35 PM »
hi thede!
hidden in the help file is this.  it's the way to handle such stuff in mircryption.  you'll find it's more work than fish, which can auto takeover the on :text: stuff since it patches mirc, but it is more flexible:

"Unfortunately, in mirc it is not possible to trigger normal text events on decrypted text, so if you have existing scripts which normally are triggered when the user types something, these scripts will not be able to respond to text that is sent to you encrypted.

So you must make some changes to your scripts to allow them to react to encrypted text.

Mircryption provides a signal facility that will help you design very flexible scripts that can see encrypted and normal text, both incoming and outgoing, and handle it appropriately.

To do this, you will use a mirc SIGNAL.  For more help on mirc signals, see the mirc help file.

The mircryption signal you will write a handler for is called MircryptionSignalAll.

The following code is from the bottom of your mircryption.mrc script, and you would copy and paste this into your own script file and use it as the starting point for your script:

; Here is a sample signal trap for catching text BEFORE it is displayed on screen.

;  you can implement this signal in your other scripts if you want to detect

;  and act on text BEFORE it is displayed.  check $1 for the type of event.

; The most common use of this signal is to issue the /mchalt or /mchaltdef commands, which will BLOCK

;  mircryption (or mircryption and mirc) from displaying the text when you return from the signal!

; DONT add your code to this procedure(!!) because it will be overwritten

;  if you upgrade - instead, make your own script file with this code.

on *:SIGNAL:MircryptionSignalAll: {

; trigger signal for other scripts that want to handle decrypted text, only trigger for text that was received encrypted or outgoing crypted

;  this allows other scripts to be written to trigger on incoming encrypted text, without having to modify mircryption.

;  note, this signal is triggered on your OWN text too(!), just detect the case where $1==input.

; $1 = event type (input,text,query,notice,action,join,topic,part,kick,quit,nick,mode)

; $2 = target ($chan)

; $3 = speaker ($nick)

; $4 = is $true if text was encrypted or $false if plaintext

; $5- = decrypted text

;uncomment to test this

;/echo TRAPPED MircryptionSignalAll: event: $1 , target: $2 , speaker: $3 , encrypted: $4, firstword = $5, text: $5-

;if ($5 == hidethis) {

;  ; this test hides all lines (incoming, actions, outgoing, everything - which starts with the word hidethis)

;  echo 4 MircryptionSignalAll test, hiding your statement.

;  /mchaltdef

;}

}

Note that an older signal (MircryptionSignal) is still present in the mircryption.mrc script for backward compatibility, but it is being phased out; MircryptionSignalAll provides all of the functionality of the original MircryptionSignal and adds more features.

SO, to recap, go to the bottom of your mircryption.mrc and copy the MircryptionSignalAll function and paste it in a script of your own, then inside that check for and handle the text and input events you want.

grab windows object hotkey in SC is Ctrl+Shift+PrtScr i think.
Bring that up and then select the object and hit Ctrl+T.

I think I finally figured out the proximal cause of a crazy problem a friend of mine is having.  Some installers she runs just seem to disapear when launched.  After much confusion it looks like the damn installers are running silently!

In other words, the program is actually being installed quietly/silently, without asking for any options, as if they had been run specifically in silent mode (silent mode is designed for installation on clients when you dont want any interaction).

I think the common denominator here is Installshield (or MSI+Installshield combo?).

Now, the question i have is, is there something about her PC that might be confusing installshield (MSI) to run always in silent mode?

Any help is appreciated.

it doesn't include this functionality to detect whether or not .NET 2.0 is already installed

i use inno myself and i would love to know a good answer for this as well, to detect presence of net2 and help user download and install it if not.

another option would be to let your parents make the pages however they want and just use a simple find+replace script that you could run which would replace
<img src="
with
<img src="http://www.website.com/folder1/
that seems to me like it might be easiest and maybe best solution.

C# is a good choice if you are on windows.

but don't get me wrong, if you can get excited about learning c++ then go for it.  my advice to all new programmers is simply to find something that motivates you, usually a particular book or something.  whatever language you choose will be fine as long as you can stay motivated enough to keep programming and practicing.

ps. whatever language you choose, check out our Programming School section to help motivate you with some challenges: https://www.donation...index.php?board=77.0

yeah i agree that installing farr just for this would be overkill :)

to jump on Earthcoder's bandwagon, i would also like to see a simple plugin which would load a set of text files (maybe in its "Notes" subdirectory or let you configure where), and then when you trigger it would search through the lines of text matching them.  When you select it could copy the text from the line to the clipboard.

i think it would be a useful plugin for keeping and searching through simple text notes.

note that the farr plugin system is quite well suited for this, can can handle all filtering and matching of lines, and so will do most of the work.  it also includes a feature to copy text to clipboard so it's easy.

my farrfox plugin in fact does almost exactly what this plugin would do, except it grabs url bookmarks from a text file, so perhaps i should just write this plugin myself.. if no one does it by the end of the week i will.
