if these clowns could generate effective code maybe they would have got a _real_ job

;D Very true. Still, it never hurts to OVERestimate your enemy.

General Software Discussion / Re: Context menu Antivirus
« Last post by Darwin on June 11, 2008, 10:48 AM »
Hmm... this thread is giving me food for thought. I really like Webroot Antivirus with Spysweeper but cannot stand the hit it makes on resources at system start - this with checking for updates and checking status disabled at startup. IF one were to be very diligent in only surfing the net from within a virtual machine or, in my case, from within a sandbox (I use Sandboxie) then one *could* disable to real-time protection... Now, do I have a brass pair big enough to do this? Er, no...

Compensating in Courtenay...

I didn't notice that, rjbull. That certainly re-defines hideously expensive! However, the stand-alone price, while steep, is bearable. The standalone cost of DOpus is arguably worth it but steeper yet! I, of course, count myself among the Dopus faithful...

Why am I suddenly in support of waterboarding;)

As Carol says, backup, backup, backup... To combat this sort of instanity, I suppose this means that disk imaging is the best way to go.

Thanks Lashiec - nicely done

Don't forget everyone, toss a few DC shekels the way of the authors of reviews here on DC. It's a nice way of saying "thanks" and "well done"...

WinMout workes really well. However, the uninstaller sucks (could just be my set up, I know) - it starts up, you click OK to let it uninstall completely and then it hangs. Forever.  >:(

PS Don't bother looking at the users forum - SPAM central. Wow! Online pharmacies and busty blondes - what do these have to do with the paperless office? Well, I guess you have a virtual office environment along with a virtual pharmacy and a virtual... you get the picture  :-[

Anyway, as Brett pointed out, this does appear to be abandonware BUT the feature set and Brett's endorsement are compelling nonetheless, unless you're running Vista, Tom? In that case, all bets are off!

An alternative to PaperPort, with which I have no experience whatsoever, is Paper Valet: http://www.chocksett...are.com/products.asp

A nod to Brett, who posted a link to this here.

Tom - $99.99 IS the cost of the non-pro version of PaperPort. The Pro version is $199  :o
2711
Crap. Scratch kind of expensive - make that hideously expensive. The last time I paid attention the buy in price of Dopus was about $55 USD, now it's closer to $81  :o
2712
Directory Opus can do this via its Synchronize tool. I can't recall if a plug-in is required (it'd be free anyway) to allow the following, but you can open archives (including RAR files) as directories folders in Dopus, so you set up two panes, one for each of the two RAR files you are comparing and then select Tools - Synchronize and then click on Compare. It will offer to synch the two files for you, but you just click Cancel... Kind of an expensive way to do this, mind you! And possibly not quite what you're after? At any rate, I've just installed WinMount and am off to take a look.

Can't answer  your question, Justice. In fact, I'm here to add a more generic question of my own that I've been mulling over the past month. Basically, is NOW the time to buy electronics and other goods, full stop? With the price of fuel in the stratosphere and with no let up in "fuel inflation" in sight, will electronics and other goods begin to increase in price significantly? Think about a computer, an amalgam of parts produced all over the world that is then itself shipped elsewhere... Frightening to consider the cumulative effect of the cost of shipping being passed on to the consumer...

I have an ulterior motive in that I have big gift card to use at Staples. It's good for two years from issue (about 22 months now) and was issued as a warranty buy out on a notebook that failed. We don't NEED another notebook/desktop at the moment, but I wonder if the $750 Core 2 Duo notebook deals that are everywhere right now are going to be a thing of the past soon. At current prices I can use the card to cover most of the purchase price and pay for taxes and an upgrade to 4GB RAM out of my own pocket and not be "out of pocket" too much (perhaps $350 - less than $100 if I keep my pants on and don't go for the RAM upgrade)...

Living Room / Re: Where does the power go when I save it?
« Last post by Darwin on June 11, 2008, 06:57 AM »
I *think* the issue is that in order to "get" electricity we have to convert energy, which is costly - both in terms of financial outlay and in terms of environmental impact. I also *think* that the point of Earth Hour was/is to show how big a reduction in our energy needs we can make with simple acts such as turning off a light when we leave a room. The hope, then, is that people will start to do this of their own volition on a regular basis, thereby reducing electricity requirements overall and causing power companies to reduce output and to stop needing to build new hydro electric dams, coal burning electricity generating plants, etc.

Have you looked in the Help section here at the DC site:

https://www.donation...er.com/Help/entry/1/

You *should* find "About/Enter new Licence key" in the Help menu from within the main Screencaptor window.

Dang. Carol beat me to it!

EDIT: note that you can also right click on the icon in the system tray and select "About/Enter new Licence key" from the context menu...

Just an update: Archivarius has been updated to version 4.05. This is noteworthy because my index has been optimized and now sits at a hair over 1GB instead of 2
wow, that's a pretty big change... Thanks for the info Darwin.

I compressed it afterward and it's down to 925MB  :)
2717
I'm running all three on a notebook with a 120GB harddrive... The indices combined total about 3GB - the largest being Archivarius at about 2GB with dtSearch weighing in at 580MB and X1 at 472MB... I still have about 20 GB free so am not worried.

Oh, I thought the indexes were FAR bigger.

Me too, Curt, me too!

Note: I left the file content search running and it took 2 hours 26 minutes and 25 seconds to complete  :o
2719
New version of FileLocator Pro is out (v. 4.5) - it's MUCH quicker in searching file names - 2 seconds to search 85 67 GB and find 491 hits.

SearchGT did the same search in 5.7 seconds and returned 489 hits.

Right, off to do a file content search with FL Pro...

Well... content search has been running for 13 minutes and is at 4% done  :o

Yup. I can buy Yakult at Real Canadian Superstore...

I dunno though... I have a circa 2000 notebook running Wn2k with 512MB RAM and two Centrino machines (2004 and 2006 vintages) running XP Pro Sp-3 (2004) and Sp-2 (2006), both with 2GB RAM. The Win2k machine and the 2006 XP Pro machine are running Office 2003 and the 2004 XP Pro machine is running Office 2007. The Win2k machine is the quickest of the lot...

I put this down to the fact that on system boot it's running about 40 process vs. 71 on my older XP Pro machine, to the fact that it only has a handful of applications installed (vs. about 325 on the older XP machine), and to the differences between memory requirements for Win2k and XP. Note: both XP machines are set to Windows Classic and have the themes service disabled...

Main point is that old P-IIIE 600mhz processor with 512MB RAM is still a viable, useful machine. Who'd a thunkit in 2000 when I bought it? Well, OK, I certainly didn't! Can't speak for the rest of you...
2724
Desktop Search software is useful for me, at any rate. I have 20 GB of pdf files (ie thousands of them, some are over 1000 pages long), all academic journal articles and masters and PhD theses and dissertations. Often I am after a bit of content - all pdfs that mention and discuss some arcane term like "microstratigraphy" or "olecranon process" or "HLA" - and desktop search is the only way to to this, short of opening each pdf up and reading through it...
