very very cool stuff.  sort of like a smart interactive external raid.
(ps you might adjust title of post to make it a little easier to identify what its about).

so it looks like its keeping multiple copies of data for redundancy - it would be nice to see what the internal filesystem organization looks like, and how configurable it is.  very cool stuff though, no doubt about it.

right ok so its UNC path -- FARR is not supposed to be trying to resolve those, but maybe the code snuck back in somewhere, like checking icon. let me try to duplicate and if i can't i'll ask you for the shotcut info.

thanks cnewtonne!
do you happen to still have that file/shortcut!
i added code to tell farr to STOP trying to resolve such network shortcuts but it was obviously still trying to.
if you could find it or recreate the phenomena, and help me figure out what it looks like i would appreciate it.
mail me ([email protected]) and we can do via email.

General Software Discussion / Cybernet Recommends 5 IE Addons
« Last post by mouser on May 07, 2007, 09:34 AM »
Some useful addons for IE7..

  • 1.ieSpell – Spell-check in my opinion is something that should have been integrated into the browser from the start. However, it wasn’t. Luckily ieSpell is a free add-on that will spell-check any text found in input boxes on a Web page. This is great if you’re in forums, or commenting frequently.
  • 2.IE7 Open Last Closed Tab – This is one of the most handy add-ons yet! With tabs being a big part of IE7, once again, I’m surprised this feature wasn’t included with the browser from the start.  If you’re like me, you have multiple tabs opened at once. At least once a day I close a tab that I really didn’t mean to close. Instead of trying to remember exactly what the URL is, you just have to press “Alt-X” and the last closed tab will open.
  • 3. Inline Search – If you’re needing to search a page for a specific word or term, this will do the trick, and will do so better than the built in search. It’s more of an extra added convenience because it searches while you type. It’s 1000 times better than the normal find box, but it’s not as nice as the “find while you type” feature that Firefox offers. It’s definitely worth installing though!
  • 4. Foxy Tunes – Talk about a crowd-pleaser! Foxy Tunes allows you to control your favorite media player like iTunes, Winamp, Windows Media Player, etc., without ever leaving your browser! For those who like to have their Tunes playing, this is a must-have. I haven’t come across one complaint yet for this add-on.
  • 5. RoboForm – Sometimes it’s hard to remember all of your passwords for all of the accounts you have online.  This is where RoboForm comes in.  It will save your password information from logins and automatically log you in to the password protected sites that you visit. It also makes the process of filling out forms easier by using identity presets.

yeah it does seem like a bug.  question, do you have the option checked on the general tab that says "always launch shortcuts directly" ? if not, try it.
26885
jdmarch, for what its worth, farr 2 has built in shortcuts for control cpanel, so just type "cpanel add" or something like that and it should bring it up :)

Weleome to the site Dean!

Ok some good issues raised, let me address them.

First, you can reconfigure the hotkey you want to use to capture a region, so i definitely encourage you to do that rather than have to use the right-click on system tray icon.

Second, you are right that you should be able to use escape to cancel a selected-region capture - i'm putting that on my todo list and should have it added on next release.

Third, the idea of being able to use the SendTo system menu is actually quite good.. I'm going to look into adding that to the SendTo menu as you suggest.  Right now, you can do what you want by right clicking on the thumbnail of the screenshot and choosing the SendTo menu item from the menu that pops up, but it would be more convenient to show it in the SendTo main menu, and i'll look into that.

Living Room / Re: RPG Tower Defense flash game
« Last post by mouser on May 05, 2007, 09:31 PM »
i thought i replied to this already but i think i closed my browser before i posted it.

First off, great start!
It's no secret that i love tower defense games, and this one looks like it's going to be very good.

One of the tricky things to get right with the tower defense games is to make them easy to start, but have it so it really requires some strategy to do well..

We recently posted about one of very best tower games (Onslaught) and you should be sure to check it out, because it shows how to really make a game both easy to play but also "deep" in the sense of drawing you in to experiment with different strategies (https://www.donation...index.php?topic=8183).  I think that might be your biggest challenge at this point.

The idea of having different towers for different classes of enemies is interesting, but i couldn't quite figure out when i would use dif towers and where i would want to place them differently.. and the fact that each tower could get the same upgrades also made me feel like i wasnt as compelled to explore with different kinds of towers.

The ability for enemies to take different directions has a great potential i think (Curator Defense, another tower defense game, used this idea to great effect), but i couldn't figure out how the monsters in your game made their decisions.

So i guess my general feeling was it had great potential but i want to see more features and game design which makes me feel like i want to really explore to figure out different kinds of strategies..

I hope I'm explaining this right cause I sure can't figure out how to google for it.

can you explain a bit more? it's not entirely clear what you are wanting to do.

maybe what you want is just a php page which does nothing more but do:
<pre>
DUMP CONTENTS OF TEXT FILE HERE WHICH WILL KEEP ITS FORMATTING BECAUSE OF THE <PRE> tags
</pre>

I've just posted May's site of the month: http://www.ghacks.net

Read more here: https://www.donationcoder.com/Links/
ghacks.net is one of only a handfull of reliably good daily blog sites for software news and discovery. Rather than focus on one specific area, ghacks offers clear and useful advice on maximizing your computer experience, with tips about new utilities and games, optimization tweaks, etc.; anything that could make your computer experience more enjoyable, in nice short summaries that are fun and easy to read. We're always finding things to blog about that we discovered on ghacks -- it's a daily read for us, and we think you'll like it too. Our only quibble: Maybe it's time to upgrade the site logo?

And see past sites of the month here: https://www.donation...s/Archive/index.html

ps.
if you have suggestions for future sites of the month (preferably small websites that deserve more recognition than they are getting), email me [[email protected]]

After months of development and numerous beta releases, Pidgin 2.0 is finally ready. A significant improvement over the current 1.5.x series, Pidgin 2.0 includes several compelling features and usability enhancements. Last year, we looked at the second beta release and concluded that much work still needed to be done. Many of the problems we discovered in the early Gaim 2.0 betas have since been resolved. The official Pidgin 2.0 release, available for download from the Pidgin web site, provides an impressive level of quality and reliability.
