Living Room / Movie Title from info fragments
« Last post by MilesAhead on November 27, 2014, 12:21 PM »
There are obviously some movie buffs on DC.  I thought it may be an opportunity to post movie info fragments, such as plot or remembered locations, cast etc.. to see if anyone can remember the title.

I have been unable to find this film title:  The film concerns an auto mechanic who works at a Firestone Tire Store.  A mafioso brings his Caddy to him if he hears the least noise that shouldn't be there.  He refers to the mechanic's ability to ipick up sounds no one else can detect(except of course the mafia guy since he is so attuned to his own car.)  I believe he says words to the effect "the kid has some ear" several times in the film.

Where it gets dicey for the mechanic is that for some reason the mafia don's girl friend thinks he is sexy.  She cheats on the don with him.  The don gets wise and pursues them to kill the mechanic etc..

I think the actor who plays the mechanic is a first timer or no name guy.  I cannot recall who plays the mafioso.  I tried Joe Peshi but found nothing in his filmography that rang a bell.

If you think you know the film or have one of your own to find, please post.  :)

Ah, it wasn't just me going crazy then haha, I noticed it when you first posted, I just couldn't be bothered to ask :P
The typos seem to be fewer lately, but stealthier.  I can't kill them all.  :)

I have  no input on this topic other than the following question...

Why is the topic "v\View" ... is it a typo, or did I miss something?

I'm on a Laptop.  It seems to like adding characters after I post.  How it accomplishes it I have no idea.  :(

Edit:  Subject line fixed (I think)

Here on SMF software
when you click the "new" icon in topic list -
the display of the updated thread is being positioned
with the first unread post at top of the screen
in the list of sequential posts.
Isn't it on your side ?

No.  I just get the start of the thread.  Maybe that's the whole misunderstanding.  What I was doing was clicking last page then Go Down.  Now that I have preferences set to most recent post first in thread there's less to look through.  On some forums it is fine to have most recent post first but on this for some reason chronological felt more natural.  :)

No biggie.  :)

Edit:  Just to clarify, what I do is click "New Replies to your Posts" which brings up a list of threads.  Clicking one brings up the thread but at the thread start(when pref. set to chronological.)

Oh, sorry, yes. I would have mentioned it, but I assumed you would have already known that Google Reader was killed off some time ago.
I now use Bazqux reader, which looks just like Google Reader and behaves almost the same too. Only thing is, it cannot use the Google Reader Filter extension. I am wondering whether to rewrite the filter myself, or ask the developer to provide something that does the job.
The filter seems to be in Java script, and I am unfamiliar with writing that, but I could probably figure it out if I decided to give it the necessary time...

The little bit of dabbling I did with JavaScript I found a bit frustrating.  Enough time has passed that I forget the particulars.  But I think what bugs me about doing web is that even with scripting languages, not to mention compiled, you can set a variable value and count on it being there whereas the back button seems to undo everything.  It just seems like a frustrating medium for programming.  I don't like to use anything more complicated than target = _top.  :)

It occurs to me if you enter "none" it will be accepted.

I have tested such a choice.
It resulted in registration reject.

Can you declare which browser are you using ?

I am using Firefox.  But in any event on those Windows forums the specialized links, such as show unanswered posts, view first unread etc.. do everything with JavaScript search statements from what I can see.  If there is no new post since I last viewed the thread there will be no link.  I think it stores the post number I last viewed in each subscribed thread to make the View First Unread work.  For finding unanswered I suspect it does a query of threads with a post count = 1 etc..

One thing to keep in mind with music and movies downloaded, the stuff is released on the sly by the marketing apparatus of the content makers.  I know when I was buying Jazz CDs I was very skeptical of tjiis new fangled MP3 stuff and buying music or movies as files only.

I think most people were.  So they needed a way to get people to try the stuff and become accustomed to the packaging(as in none other than the file container format.)  The answer, let people "steal" it.  But since copyright requires you use due diligence to protect said copyright or lose it, another arm of the content providers has to constantly complain about the fact that so much content is stolen.

After the file only content and streaming mediums became excepted as shown by the willingness of people to pay, then those complaining crack down(or stop posting) on free content.

As soon as it became obvious that the content providers were going to go after those getting "free samples" I gave a wide bearth to the whole business.

( Beside I don't have a living room with HDTV to watch the stuff anymore anyway.  Watching movies on a Laptop screen just doesn't appeal somehow.)

Short version, now that they have us buying the stuff they are going to make sure we pay for it.

I rarely buy software since just about anything I need there's a free software that does it.

This thread is sidetracked.  Since Mouser doesn't chime in I can only assume the board software somehow makes it awkward to implement or everyone is fine with a chain of new posts from mixed threads.  Either way it looks like no joy.

I guess I'll just switch to newest post at top of thread instead of chronological order.

Me, if I wasn't running Windows and the forum was Windows Seven Forums I would just put Windows 7 for OS.  I don't think they send the FBI if you lie.  :)  (They send the NSA.)

On the bookmark manager utility I'd like to see an option to convert the input file type to the output file type with no assumptions as to the location.  As example, if I open a browse button for Firefox bookmarks as input and choose a file, then click a browse button for Opera as output, I can save the Firefox bookmarks formatted as Opera type .adr file, and vice versa.

IOW, I'd like to totally replace the target browser's bookmarks with those from the input, not merge.

Edit:  Preferably the input for Firefox should be able to handle and convert both .json and .html to .adr or whatever output.

You are doing it outside the thread.  What I'm talking about is inside the thread instead of pressing Go Down there should be a link View First Unread (in thread) so that you are in position to read the unread posts of the thread without clicking a link for each.  To me it's way more convenient than a top/bottom of page which is all Go Up and Go Down is.  After all I have Home End keys already.

Not life shattering.  :)  But if you got accustomed to it I think you'd miss it.

Most forums have a "view first unread" button for threads.  I found one reference to pressing the "new icon" to show the first unread in the thread.  Bit I don't see the icon or anything that looks like it will view the first unread post.  I've been hitting "Go Down" then backing up..  kind of awkward.  Is there a button that does the View First Unread in Thread function?

That new does the same thing.  It views the first post that is unread for you.  After you press it, that goes away... until someone posts again to that thread.  Am I misunderstanding your need?

What "new" are you talking about?  Say in this thread as example.  You just posted a new reply.  I log on and click "show new replies to your posts" and this thread has a link shown.  I click it.  But I don't see any "new" button or link inside the thread.  All I have to use is "go down."  In the other forums when I open a thread with new replies I can click "view first unread" since there may be 4 pages of new replies.

I gather everyone else can see something that's not showing in my browser.  At least that's how it feels?   :-\

What other languages can you advise me to learn? I considered Java but it's looks too hard.

I don't think C# is simpler to learn than Java. I'd say they are comparable in size and complexity, both the languages and the accompanying libraries.

C# Form Designer may feel familiar as I believe some people from Borland migrated to MS.  Also any experience in c type languages helps.  I haven't done much more than dabble with Java.  But I assume the portability is more straight ahead as it was designed in from the ground up.

I would definitely avoid Visual C++ Form Design as everything is just chucked into a header file that's one big mess.  If you wanted to code a module with no UI, or "engine," that's where it could come in.  But for hobbyist programming I think I'd learn C++ command line stuff first.

If you use Windows 7 I recommend it. If you are on Windows 8 this forum has the same feature

Might as well choose the appropriate forum if applicable since they are great sources for the Windows OS.  :)

"Test environment"  ;D

Let me destroy the registry of my XP in a VM or spare PC?

EDIT: Before laughing at me, what I mean is, testing things like this is not the same as testing the beta of Photoshop for example .... in my opinion

That's a good point.  The one time I had a problem with CCleaner it was the Registry Cleaner.  It worked so well all along I got complacent and didn't write the backup .reg file.  A restore point got me out and I just reverted to an older version of CCleaner until the issue was fixed in the next release.

But it doesn't pay to assume it will just work flawlessly.

Living Room / Re: Worm's neurons mapped, simulated in robot
« Last post by MilesAhead on November 21, 2014, 09:38 AM »
Oh oh.  Maybe Charles Stross isn't so far off.  In Saturn's Children humans map their own neurons to create AI in a race of slave robots.  Then conditioning is applied to make them love to serve their masters.

The original human race, or "Creators" as the robots refer to them, dies out.  Various factions search for some viable DNA material to recreate a docile "Creator" to trigger the slave reflex in rivals etc..

Fun stuff.  Let's see how long it takes them to get from worms to mammals.

If the question is about learning a programming language which is useful for a hobby programmer, I would not recommend learning Eiffel. While Eiffel is being used for production applications it is nevertheless mostly a niche language used primarily in academia (and probably only at ETHZ). Eiffel has interesting concepts from a computer science point of view (primarily its strong support for design-by-contract, and lately its verification support through AutoProof), but the useful ones have already found their way into more common languages.

If it doesn't have a form designer then it's probably not what the OP is looking for anyway.  I too tried Lazarus when I was looking for something Delphi 64 bit.  Things simple in Delphi 5 seemed like a struggle in Lazarus.

The big drawback to .NET is people won't try your program if they have to install yet another framework.  It tends to make you use what you figure most people already have on like .NET 2.x features.

I don't care about the html.  In forums the link is usually labelled "view first unread."

Edit:  The second time into the thread "view first unread" won't be there if there are no additions to the thread.  But what difference does that make?  Once I read the first unread I'm in position to read the replies to it.

I read somewhere lasers can change the color of metal by the wavelength of the cut-scan.
Not sure what could be done with paper, but perhaps a partial effect like 'smokey color' could be produced (just wild conjecture).

I just hope the smoke doesn't rise up out of the printer while running.  I'd hate to have to atone to the boss for that.  :)
