I don't think that "speed dial" is a good idea :(
Good news, then: You can turn it off! :)

General Software Discussion / Re: AutoHotkey scripts - what to do?!
« Last post by jgpaiva on April 17, 2007, 05:19 AM »
I see what you mean.
Each script you launch (either by double-clicking the exe or the .ahk file) is launched with a new instance of autohotkey.
The reason for this is because each script needs its set of variables, functions, labels and such (called the context). If you had 2 scripts launching with the same context, they'd be using each other's variables, thus, interefeering with each other (with a 99.99% of probably that it'd be a bad interaction).

You can copy 2 scripts into only one .ahk file, but most probably it simply won't work. It takes some ahk knowledge to be able to change the 2 scripts so that they don't interfeer with each other.
I believe BrotherS does this frequently, though.

I have got another problem, FARR seem to have stopped search results in the history. It began between the version 2.0.60 and 2.0.68.
I think that this bug might have passed unnoted. It presists in V2.00.76. I'm noticing it because it's one of the features i most use in Farr. :)

Developer's Corner / Re: The Best Introductory Language
« Last post by jgpaiva on April 16, 2007, 05:10 PM »
The introductory language at my university is scheme.
Pretty bad, i think. But it's only used for learning the basics of programming. Then comes C, Java, Lisp and C++ (in that order).

IMO, the best introductory language may very well be Java. It's not that easy, but the compiler is great and i find it quite a fun language. A good advantage is not having C's 'Segmentation Faults', which are traumatizing in the first times for most people. I could go on and on about Java, but probably i'd be flamed in no time :P

Notice that, although i do like programming in Java, i think it's a pretty useless language if you're not talking about corporate software and such (which is what i'm working on now) and C++ is way more useful.

If you're working under windows, a fun, useful and fast learning "language" is autohotkey. I like this one because it's so damn easy to make stuff that you can actually use.

The problem with the Wand is that if something nasty happens (you forgot your password or you accidentally delete the passwords file), then it's over as it doesn't have a simple 'export' function to CSV or even TXT
That's why i use both opera and keepass. I keep all the passwords on keypass and when i enter them the first time in opera, i save them.

Nomadin: there's a way to edit the passwords. Well.. not edit. But delete and add a new one. Just go to tools->preferences->wand->passwords
Also, there are ways to get the passwords from opera. Something related to pressing ctrl-enter followed by escape, so that opera will type the password and not open the next page. Then, using a bookmarklet, you can read the password field.

Still, i'm with you: i also think opera should have a better way to manage passwords.

Hey, it's quite good!
It's possibly the best in it's gender! And i've tried quite a few of these.
The use of mem is very low (5mb of ram and 2mb of virtual mem), it's very fast and very easy to use!
Oh, and the "close on middle click" feature is a great bonus.

It works just beautifuly! I think i'll keep this running for a while :)

I think that the best shortcut in Opera is '1' and '2'. And also, flipback and flipforward.
'1' moves to the tab on the left and '2' moves to the tab on the right.
Flipback is pressing mouse's right button and then left mouse button. Flipforward is the reverse.
By default, it's assigned to back/forward, but as my mouse has a back and a forward button,i assign those 2 gestures to the same as '1' and '2' :)

DonL: It was the [enter] on address bar bug, as it didn't work, i tried ctrl-[enter]... BIG mistake. I didn't know ctrl-[enter] would launch the focused app. The focused app was the game. Oh, and i stupidly pressed ctrl-enter more than once. Combine that with only having 512mb of mem, a slow disk and an apache server running with java virtual machine.. And you can imagine my problem :P

As for the "safe mode" you mentioned..I don't think that's a good idea. I don't eve have the delete confirmation dialog.

Oh.. I just remembered something else i'd like on XY: being able to press ctrl-z after deleting something to bring it back, as in Explorer.

Nudel: currently, by what i mentioned above, you can understand why 5mb or 10 do make a whole lot of difference to me :)
Actually, XY is now taking me 16mb of mem, thus, if it'd behave in my computer as it does in yours, you're right, DOpus would take less.

I've been using speed dial for a while now, and it's pretty good!
I don't use it that much because i'm more keyboard-centric when using Opera. Also, because old habits die hard, and i'm used to typing the alias for those pages.
But i bet much people will like it.

Also, here's a tip: to remove the yahoo search and use google's, just go to the following address: opera:config#UserPrefs|SpeedDialSearchType (i love these links to opera:config!! :D) and change "Speed Dial Search Type" to '0'.

[rant][edit] had to change the link to non-hiperlink, because the forum software appends 'http://' to the beggining of the url,thus 'opera:' links can's be used  >:( [/edit][/rant]

Whoa.. Now that's nice! :)
Actually, yesterday i was revolted because a bug in XY made me inadvertedly launch a game while my work stuff was taking almost all my mem: i ended up losing half an hour to bring the computer back :(
I'm off to make a post at XY's forum!

Oh... Buffers and delayed/lazy writing... Now i know i should pay more atention to my classes!
Yeah, i learned that in my "Operating Systems" course at the uni.
I'm much more enlightened about what could happen if i don't use that!!
Thanks a lot!

I was wrongly thinking that, after windows said there was no writing to the disk, there wouldn't be any, but you're absolutelly right, stuff can be left behind.
Oh damn... I think the best option i have is to buy a usb hub so that i can keep everything connected and not have to be plugging and unplugging stuff everytime i want to connect my usb pen drive :)

I've had the chance to test both XYplorer and DOpus intensivelly.
Last year i downloaded a (cracked) version of DOpus and used it for some time. I felt it was just everything i could ask of a file manager.
Then, i won a XYplorer license here on DC, and decided to ditch DOpus for XY.

My opinion is: XYplorer is definitelly a big advance over plain old explorer. But DOpus is also a big advance over XYplorer.

There are a few advantages about XY, though. It's fast, it's lightweight (which is a feature DOpus doesn't have, IIRC) and does ALMOST everything i want it to do.
My biggest gripe with XY is its enormous amount of bugs. Probably DOpus is developed by a big team, but XY only has one developer, and sometimes the difference is noted. For example: when using the "send to" menu to copy a file to a usb disk, i often get a "the destiny can't treat this file" error after the copy was done, even though everything went well.
There are countless bugs like that one on XY. Stuff that isn't really important, but anoys a bit.

There's a big change coming on the road, though. Since yesterday, XYplorer supports customizable keyboard shortcuts, which is one of the features i missed the most!
So, the hope that it'll evolve into something even better then DOpus isn't lost ;)

This happens frequently.
I think it's related to the stupid ms installer.
It happened to me recently. I solved it by using a "fix ms installer" kind of thing that just removed the instalation files of office (not office itself). It did work, the stupid installer stopped appearing in places where it wouldn't make sense, BUT, the office shortcuts and file associations were deleted and everytime i opened any office app, the processor would go up do 100%, although everything worked as expected.

General Software Discussion / Windows "safely remove device" thingie
« Last post by jgpaiva on April 13, 2007, 07:13 AM »
Anyone know this: Screenshot-07_04_13,01_14_08.png?
Do you actually use it?

I have a few doubts about this. There has been a time where i'd be very cautious about it, but eventually gave up when i found out that using it would frequently restart the connection on all USB ports and, as my modem was USB at the time, it'd make my internet connection drop everytime i "safelly removed" something.

Although i do understand that it is meant to avoid having processes writing or reading from the usb disk when it is unpluggled, i don't think that not using it does that much damage. I own an external USB hdd, and although i'm very cautious not to unplug it when i'm working in it, i never "safely remove" it, also because, for some reason, that thing only works when i "safely remove" that disk twice, since the first time it always fails for some stupid reason.

So.. What's your opinion on this?

Off topic a bit...
The oh-so-damn-useful unplug-stuff thingie (which i never use).
Your referring to the Safely Remove Hardware icon. Unless you have a "permanent" thing like an external drive or DVD drive that you never turn off or unplug, you actually should be using this lol...

Martin: Something like the following grid should work:

grid here
[Groups]

  NumberOfGroups = 3

[1]

  TriggerTop    = [Monitor1Top]
  TriggerLeft   = [Monitor1Left]
  TriggerBottom = [Monitor1Bottom]
  TriggerRight  = [Monitor1Left]+ 1280
  GridTop       = [Monitor1Top]
  GridLeft      = [Monitor1Left]
  GridBottom    = [Monitor1Bottom]
  GridRight     = [Monitor1Left]+ 1280

[2]

  TriggerTop    = [Monitor1Top]
  TriggerLeft   = [Monitor1Left] + 1280
  TriggerBottom = [Monitor1Bottom]
  TriggerRight  = [Monitor1Left]+ 2560
  GridTop       = [Monitor1Top]
  GridLeft      = [Monitor1Left] + 1280
  GridBottom    = [Monitor1Bottom]
  GridRight     = [Monitor1Left]+ 2560

[3]

  TriggerTop    = [Monitor1Top]
  TriggerLeft   = [Monitor1Left] + 2560
  TriggerBottom = [Monitor1Bottom]
  TriggerRight  = [Monitor1Left]+ 3840
  GridTop       = [Monitor1Top]
  GridLeft      = [Monitor1Left] + 2560
  GridBottom    = [Monitor1Bottom]
  GridRight     = [Monitor1Left]+ 3840

I hope it does the trick! ;)

I keep it simple... My 512MB of mem don't allow me for much extravagance, so i have to keep everything trimmed down to the minimum.

Screenshot-07_04_13,01_14_08.png

There's:
Opera, my browser of choice,
One AutoHotkey script i made that allows me to control winamp, have global shortcuts, have the cd drive open when i turn of the computer with a CD inside, etc etc etc.
GridMove, my all-time companion ;)
The windows wireless connection thingie.
The windows wired connection thingie.
The sound volume thingie.
The oh-so-damn-useful unplug-stuff thingie (which i never use).
FARR!!! (this one doesn't need any explanation)
msnmessenger, on which i'm "online" 24/7.
Clipboard Help+Spell, which has already saved me from losing important data a few times.
AllSnap, an app that is very lightweigth and provides for the snap windows funcionality that Windows itself should already have.

I also keep Winamp running all day, although i've gone tired of that minimize to tray thing, and now just keep it on the taskbar.

Definitelly interesting!

I, as a user of Keepass, was very interested in this. Thanks a lot for the info! :D
Looks like, for the time being, i'll just keep to my current version of keepass,though ;)
