The Alt+L trick is one of the least known essential tricks in thebat; it should be plastered all over their web page.  i remember when we first discovered it on this forum and my mind was blown.  good times :)

it's quite easy for me to add new functions to the fcalc parser engine (it uses muParser, http://muparser.sourceforge.net).

The code for fcalc plugin will be released, so i or others could easily add new functions to the calculation engine.

Anyone who uses the calc alias in FARR may soon become quite happy.
The new FCalc plugin for FARR shows off some features of the new FARR plugin system:

  • Live updating of calculation as you type
  • Ability to set and use variables (persistant across runs!)
  • History Tape display (shows past calculations)

To install, use the dcupdater, OR grab from here and unpack into your FARR Plugins directory: https://www.donation...dons/FCalc/FCalc.zip

Living Room / Re: Why do so many micropayment systems fail?
« Last post by mouser on June 04, 2007, 09:29 PM »
sorry to always be pushing this little article i wrote last year (https://www.donation...icles/One/index.html), but quoting myself:

"The idea of micropayments has been around for quite a while. They've not yet taken off and many people think they never will. Our experiences suggest the opposite. We believe that if donating were safe, easy, and immediate, with a low overhead incurred for small donations, it would in fact become a viable funding source for many.

Our experience suggests that people are willing to donate, and donate non-trivial sums, if the motivation to do so can overcome the effort involved and the perceived security risk.

In fact, we believe that the paradigm shift required for successful adoption may not be the move to "micro" donations at all, but the move to super-easy-donations.

If users could simply hit a button on their keyboard to donate a dollar or two to a website, and be confident that their donation would be securely processed with no risk to themselves, and knew that their donation was going to the content creator and not some middleman, we think it would become a viable funding mechanism for all kinds of content creators including musicians, writers, and software authors. The key is making it easy, and giving donors feedback that their donations have a real and concrete effect on the content creation.

While there are a few small micropayment services in existence now, they don't have enough market share to make them attractive to users or content creators. Until users are motivated to donate into these services to create a buffer account of money they can donate, and until content providers support such payments widely, it's a lost cause. However it seems inevitable to us that eventually as digital payment systems become universally accepted and standardized, we're likely to see a standardized micropayment system where any user can buy anything on any web page, from any computer terminal, with a simple click or thumbprint swipe. When that happens, it should make micropayments considerably easier for individuals to make a living off of, rather than depending on the filters of large corporations, news organizations, software companies, music labels, etc."

very cool stuff -- you can easily imagine the time when we will be able to start with a small image of the earth and be able to zoom in to any location in it at high resolution.  soon we will be able to travel the world from home.

good advice from nosh; keep in mind though that certain apps will eat memory like mad as part of their normal operation (photoshop, audio editors).  firefox and ie can also occasionally end up grabbing very large chunks of memory.

if you have 1gb of ram, can i suggest that buying yourself another 1-3gb will be an incredibly cheap and easy way to dramatically increase your pc's performance.
26666
ok well there is no need to keep renaming and reinstalling.
when a program hangs, just bring up task manager, and right click and terminate the program, then re-run it.

however, the fact that farr is hanging is very troubling, and i need to fix whatever problem it is that is causing this.  let's talk over email and see if we can't track down this problem.
26667
does the break key still bring up farr?
it sure sounds like maybe your windows is just hiding inactive icons.
if the break key works to bring up farr, then don't worry if its not shown in the tray.
on the other hand, if farr wont return to screen on break key and is essentially hung up, then that's a whole different matter that needs to be fixed.

General Software Discussion / Re: Semi-Automated file naming
« Last post by mouser on June 03, 2007, 03:38 PM »
i think a good solution to this would be not to focus on the save dialog, but instead think about a generic tool that can pop up with a hotkey and let you fill out a little form with checkboxes or fields, whatever, and then create some text matching a template you design, and copy it to clipboard or paste it in your active program.  then you could use it for save dialog or when renaming, or whatever.

You could use my "Form Letter Machine" program for something like this, though i hardly think it's ideal.  A dedicated program for this might be best.

Here's the deal-
"A local server....................without needing to contact a server"
This is the part i don't understand. Would our computer serve as a server or is it something else?

It's a bit awkwardly put, but basically you've got it right.

Note that there is nothing magical about a "server", it's just a computer running certain programs that will serve web pages and listen and respond to requests.  You can install the same software on your pc (search for WAMP).

But these tools like Google Gears (when google does something it becomes worldwide news as if they invented the concept, but the truth is other companies have been working on this stuff), work a little differently.  As I understand it the basic idea is that when you are offline, instead of sending your requests and changes to the server, they are "cached" in a local database on your pc, and held until you are re-connected to the internet, at which point they are transmitted to the remote server.

So in essence your local pc "acts" like the server for temporary purposes, keeping track of all of your changes and requests until the real web server is available, and may even pre-load data from the server before you go offline, so that it can respond to your requests from within the browser (for example if you are going on a road trip, it might download tons of information ahead of time, and then serve it to your browser as you request it, AS IF you were connected to the internet).
26675
cmpm, just so you know -- the great majority of people on this site are not programmers, just people who like software, so there is nothing to feel self-conscious about.

The main answer to your question is that Google Gears is a tool for Web Developers to help them write web services that can work even when you are not connected to the web.  For the end user it's simply something you would install if and when you encountered wanted to use a web service that someone had written with it.
