Personally I don't use Evernote any more. I hated the new client and I haven't been back to look again.

Still haven't really found a solution but I do have MS OneNote installed - not that I use it much.

I was just sent this by a friend:

The following message  was sent to Hewlett Packard about one of their new printers.  Read the letters then  look at the video

READ THE MESSAGE BELOW TO THE GEEK SQUAD AND THEIR ANSWER BEFORE LOOKING AT THE VIDEO!

Dear Geek Squad

I recently purchased an HP printer and when I stay in the room when
it's printing it works perfectly. However, nearly every time I leave the
room while a print job is in progress and come back a bit later, I find all
the papers come out wrinkled, sometimes even shredded, with blurred ink.

If I re-start the print job and baby sit it there are no problems.
You can imagine that this has been very frustrating and I would appreciate
one of your technicians coming out to fix whatever the problem is.

Thank you
Dave Larson

----------------

Dave

Thank you for contacting the Geek Squad. As you know, one of our top
technicians was dispatched to investigate your printer problem. His
initial findings mirrored your experience so he set up a hidden camera to
document what was causing the paper disruption.

Please review the attached video, and thanks again for your business,
and for the laughs we all had upon discovering the source of your
problem.

The Geek squad

Video attached in WMV format.

I have also added a DIVX version for anyone who can't play WMV but I had to ZIP it as DIVX is not a permitted file type.

--The on board sound of the motherboard has a decent amount of static and noise to it.  I'm only able to use headphones for the time being, but it sounds like way too much static.  If I move the mouse, especially when I use the scroll wheel, there's this high static sound.  That's no good for me since I do a lot with audio and music.  I will probably use my pro sound card once I have my cables and speakers set up.  I wonder how others deal with that noise though.

Check your mixer settings - I had this problem once and it turned out to be bad mixer settings!

Is it true you can dock the taskbar on the side of the screen like KDE allows?

Yep - just unlock it and drag it to the edge you want. It looks very nice too ;)

- virtualisation - not sure how long but server virtualisation, platform virtualisation and storage virtualisation have existed for a long time. Vmware was in the 90s

I was using virtualization back in the mid 80s.

Granted it wasn't Windows or Linux or anything like that.

When Acorn (now ARM) released their first RISC machines (the Archimedes) they threw in an emulator for the older BBC Micros so that people who changed machine could continue to use their old software. After that various emulators were released including a C/PM based system (which was an alternative at the time on PCs to MSDOS).

I certainly wasn't suggesting a free for all, or that there should not be accountability for the actions people take.  My point was, and is, that there can be legitimate uses for these services.

Agreed - and if they can't sort out the issues needed to get it working I am sure there is someone on DC who could pop along and help out ;)

seems to me that it all depends on what your job is if being on Facebook and other social sites is not allowed.  The university I attend keeps at least one page on facebook, possibly more, I haven't looked, but a part of what governments do (or should do) is communicate to the people.  Sure you don't want secrets let lose, and you don't want the filing clerk throwing shoes at friends, but there are legitimate business/government uses for these sites.

There is also the issue of accountability - if someone is posting on Facebook as an 'official' of government they had better damn well make sure it doesn't cause the brown stuff to hit the fan.

There is a simple solution to this - if government wants a Facebook presence then it should be edited by one person and anyone who wants stuff posted should clear it through the editor. Freedom of speech doesn't extend to 'say what you like' in any employee situation (at least not without potential repercussions including the boot).

General Software Discussion / Free software - Sony Acid Express 7
« Last post by Carol Haynes on January 22, 2009, 04:13 PM »
Acid Express is a free 10 track only version of Acid 7.

For anyone who doesn't know Acid (originally produced by Sonic Foundry and now owned by Sony) is a leading loop based music sequencer/compositional tool.

If you want to give it a try go to: AcidPlanet.

You will need to register to get the download but then it is free.

You can buy loops from Acid Planet but there are lots of third party loop libraries - and you can find plenty of free loops if your search the web.

Acid Planet also produce what the call their 8-packs. These consist of packs free downloadable loop packs which get updated with new loops (IIRC) every month. [Correction: weekly packs]

You can also download demo projects.

Why not give it a go and let us hear your masterpieces ;)

Probably the graphics drivers. If you are using NVIDIA I don't recommend the latest builds (they are really buggy) - go back a couple of generations!

Opps - I see you are a using Radeon drivers ... nuff said!

I never use standby on any computer - too many times I have been bitten by that little b*****r. It amazes me that they haven't yet got it right.

Too many times drivers die during 'standby' mode never to recver until you reboot.

Its slower but I prefer hibernate if you want the ultimate PSM.

I hate PSM because like SB found it sometimes doesn't actually return you to a usable windows desktop!

FWIW when I have used PSM I found if the desktop did not appear on a mouse wiggle switching the monitor off and on again did the trick - so the ultimate PSM is simple press the power switch on the monitor!

I agree with f0dder.

However I also hate power saving mode and my solution is simple. Turn off power saving and use a screensaver - MS even provide a screen saver which is called "blank" which basically turns off the screen. If you fancy something less boring just point a picture slideshow (one of the standard set of MS screenavers included in Windows) at you My Pictures folder (or any folder you like) and you will get a constantly changing display of your images - tyhey fade and slide around so you shouldn't get burn in problems.

Living Room / IRC chatroom - web or client - problems?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on January 20, 2009, 05:46 PM »
Or is it?

Every time I click on Chat! (in Firefox or IE) I get a screen asking for a screen name but when I click to join the chatroom I just get an error.

In FF it says: "TypeError: this.onerror is not a function"

I decided to install a client but when ever I connect to a channel TrendMicro RUBotted reports "Detected connection to Botnet Command and Control server" and says a Bot has started up on my system or "Detected DNS query of malicious domain". These BOT warnings only occur when I start up an IRC client, even when I disable IRC monitoring in RUBotted.

Is this just a false positive - or should I be worried?

I have tried running TrendMicro's Housecall, NOD32 AV/AS scanner and Spybot Search and Destroy but none seem to produce anything ???

It is important that you don't get any air bubbles in that layer of 'goo'.

If in any doubt before you switch on get a tube of ArcticSilver and some isopropyl alcohol and clean the processor and heatsink before applying fresh Arctic Silver (follow the instructions on their website).

Corel has a plug-in for Photoshop called Knockout that specializes in this. http://www.corel.com...5061771#tabview=tab0
You don't even need a green screen to use it, so it should work great if you've got one.

I bought a copy of this years ago - it isn't that great and is effectively dead. I have Adobe CS3 and I haven't installed it but I am not even sure it is fully compatible with Photoshop beyond version 7 (it was certainly never updated after the CS range was released). Trouble with Corel is they continually do this - buy up products that are growing and then carry on selling them long after they are defunct (look at KPT plugins which have seen no development for many years but are still flogged by Corel). If they don't flog a dead horse they simply kill the application by trying to develop it (eg. PaintShop Pro).

If you want green screen software check out the BorisFX website, in particular ChromaKey. (You will need a second mortgage though as they are top quality professional tools).

Not sure but I think Pinnacle Software started to include green screen in their tools too - but I haven't used them in years.

What Amazon (and other sellers) should do (worldwide) is to state in ALL BELKIN product descriptions that reviews cannot be trusted and that Belkin business practices are highly dubious and immoral. Buy this item at your own risk.

They should then remove all 5 * ratings and refuse to stock products so that customers know if they order things they will have to wait.

If Belkin don't want to sell through these sellers any more it is only a bonus to the sellers' credibility.

I have bought a number of Belkin products over the years - the best that can be said for them is that they are generally cheaper than the competition but none of them worked well or for an extended period. Their drivers and software are generally very poor.

I wonder if they will give me 65 cents for that one ;)
