Roboform, to be brutally honest, is the sole reason I do not use opera. Opera's lack of API prevents roboform from tying into the browser, and as such, prevents me from being a user. Roboform is the single most used program on my computer. I highly recommend it.

General Software Discussion / Re: Vista Start Menu Search gets more FARRified
« Last post by Josh on February 25, 2007, 02:37 PM »
I have been using vista and I have to say, I love the search feature. Its not limited to the start menu, as has been wide knowledge since beta 1 of Vista, and can be used in any folder view with explorer. A great feature. Microsoft really did good with this.

I have an IMAP mailbox of around 450MB as of right now and thunderbird runs like a champ. By the way, this imap account is set to d/l each message, so they are all stored locally as well as remotely.

Otherwise, PLEASE STOP SPAMMING THE FORUMS WITH YOUR POINTLESS POSTS. If you cannot follow the style of posting on the particular forum you are visiting, then dont bother posting.

I am running vista, as half of the people here who complain about it cannot say, and I have very few complaints. My biggest complaint is lack of game support however this is minor as its not the fault of microsoft that I chose to upgrade early before my game makers patched their games. So, I will not fault microsoft for that. Also, I have been able to play every bit of media I own, no drm problems, nothing. So again, people whining about DRM are blowing smoke because DRM only applies to media you obtain which HAS DRM. So yes, if you purchase DRM protected music, then you might have a different experience. I have purchased some DRM protected music in the past via napster and have not had any issues playing it back in vista, it works beautifully.

The interface is very easy on the eyes, very quick and responsive, and very easy to use. If you dont care about eye candy, turn off the stuff, its not very hard and the difference in CPU usage/memory usage is negligible.

Anyways, point in this post, dont complain about something you havent used because others have said things, thats like a 14 year old moving to linux or saying he is using linux because he wants to be cool. Think for yourself people. I did, I ignored the mass majority bad mouthing vista (most without cause) and I am very happy with it. My hat goes off to broken85 for his post, very intelligent and very well thought out. Some very good points made.

Memory size tactics aside, trillian still performs, handles, and generally is more responsive on my system. So, as I said in the IRC channel, I dont care what methods a program uses to lower its memory usage, the fact that it uses little RAM, paging lesser used routines and data to disk, is still a big plus to me. Trillian is very responsive, doesnt require a lot of configuration to get things running in a method which is pleasing and easy to use, and runs very fast on my system. Yes, the startup might take a couple of seconds more, however, as I've said in this thread, I dont look at this as a negative being that I have to restart miranda several times a day due to crashes so totalling up the startup time of the crash experiences to the startup time of trillian puts miranda at a big disadvantage.

But anyways, to each their own. If you want something that just works, and supports more of the features of the official clients, then trillian is better for you. If you want a very minimalistic approach, with gobs of configuration options, then choose miranda.

That is why when I received my free copy of Windows Vista Business edition, I called microsoft's anytime upgrade line and asked PRIOR TO purchasing if I could do a clean install with the upgrade I purchase through the anytime upgrade. They tell me "Yes, it wont be an issue". I even verified to them what a clean install was. I told them that I meant on a fresh hard disk, without installing another OS first, they said "Yes sir, no problem". Well, I purchase the upgrade to ultimate and guess what, WRONG.

So what did I do? I took names of who I talked to and called back, spent 2 hours on the phone, talked to 6 diff people, and now I have a full working key to Windows Vista Ultimate. All I can say to this is, watch out companies, what you tell your customers, they will hold you to it. Just like the guy who was told by verizon that his data rate was 2 hundredth's of a cent and not 2 hundredths of a dollar. Be careful what you say!

General Software Discussion / Re: CD Ripping
« Last post by Josh on February 07, 2007, 05:11 PM »
I also recommend Easy CD-DA extractor. This is by far the easiest, and most feature filled software available. If you want a freeware solution, EAC gets lots of raves, however I have not been able to get it to work on my computers. If you dont mind paying, Easy CD-DA is by far your best solution.

I meant 8.4MB, didnt mean to put kb heh. That would be insane.
2671
I am using trillian 3.1 with 3 open IM windows and the shipment tracker plugin currently monitoring 3 packages.
2672
While trillian might load slowly, the fact that I have to, on several systems, reload miranda more than 3 times per day on a clean install negates the load time as I have to take extra time to relaunch miranda after a crash.

As for memory usage, again, I am showing 4K private bytes with a working set of 8.4K

Also, the fact that trillian seems to have fewer issues connecting to various different clients and accepting their text formatting is a huge plus. All 4 of my bug reports regarding miranda screwing up with other clients have been negated as "Cant reproduce here" and then closed.

Living Room / Re: System Idle Process Using 85% of CPU
« Last post by Josh on February 07, 2007, 05:44 AM »
The system idle process is nothing but a timer for IDLE CPU time. It is not actually USING your CPU, however, it is used to let you know that nothing else is requesting CPU time. When it drops below 99%, that means other processes are accessing the CPU.
2674
huge? Whats funny is, trillian is using 4000K Private Bytes, thats less than 4MB of RAM. Miranda, when it was running on my system, averaged 6-7MB. So whats this about huge?
