Thanks for doing the legwork on that, tsaint  It all looks good! I'd have to fork over the $50 for VBA support but even at that it would be cheap. Of course, I already have Office 2007 Ultimate installed... so don't really need it! Good to know nonetheless...

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: MyLife Organized (updated review for v2)
« Last post by Darwin on June 26, 2008, 06:30 PM »
My Life Organized looked great and seemed to sync effortlessly with my ppc too. But $77.95 for the pro edition (to be able to sync) was way above my budget.

Time for another DC discount, anyone? Anyone?

Hmph! Well then, off to change my vote  :-[

My system came preinstalled with WinXP Sp-1a. Fortunately, I was given a real XP installation CD (albeit an OEM one) so I immediately wiped the harddrive and did a reinstall to get rid of all of the crud that had been preinstalled. So... my answer is *kind of* both as well... though I voted for "preinstalled".

Heh, heh, just occurred to me to wonder if should be wearing anoraks  :o

In the UK, the pejorative noun anorak (similar to the Japanese "otaku", meaning a geek or enthusiast) is often applied to people who obsessively pursue a particular hobby that is considered boring, such as train spotting or stamp collecting.

Check out the current leadling IP, though - an 86!

Well, Mike, if you re-read the title of this thread, you'll realize that it really isn't important if your PC is on a diet or not, because the Kingsoft application is meant for a mom!!  :P

Yes, but my mum has been on a diet for years!

Thanks for the mini-mini-review, Curt  ;D  I've long wanted to try Kingsoft but could never locate an installer for the English language version. No excuses now, except my computer is on a software diet  :o

I'll just bookmark the site, or not...  ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox 3 Released
« Last post by Darwin on June 17, 2008, 05:11 PM »
Tom - I just installed it and it overwrote Firefox 2... no big deal as I would have uninstalled 2 anyway. FWIW, it gives you the option to change installation path - default (under XP) is c:\program files\mozilla firefox...

Thanks, João - that worked   I compared the installers first and they *appear* to be identical (same size, version number, etc.) but the full release was installed...

Fair enough! Thanks for getting back to us... I'm down to dtSearch and X1 for indexers but still have a NUMBER of non-indexing search tools installed.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best duplicate finder in email client?
« Last post by Darwin on June 16, 2008, 09:44 PM »
Nice to see you back, Codetrucker

I tried a MapiLabs application a couple of years ago to remove duplicates from my Outlook pst (pretty sure I was running Outlook 2000 at the time). It worked well, but it was as scary as some of the less feature-rich duplicate finders I've tried in that it was hard to determine what I was deleting and from where...

Might be worth a look now, though. I know the MapiLabs add-ins are fairly well thought of. This, of course, assumes that you're using Outlook as your e-mail client...

Just an update - I'm down to two file managers (above and beyond Windows Explorer), Dopus 9 and XYPlorer. Even File Manager is gone... I wasn't really using any of the others and thought I might as well streamline my system. Not sure how long XYPlorer is going to last... I love it but don't use it much, either.

Just to note: I've uninstalled all but two of 16 file managers. I'm left with DOpus 9 and XYPlorer installed... I *think* I suffer from the symptoms described in this article:

http://www.eurekaler...-06/cp-wmi060608.php

Because I'm a bit of a packrat where books and software are concerned  :o

Hmm... I use Treesize Professional to do what SpaceMonger does (never tired SpaceMonger). Like Superboyac said, these types of application are useful when you're scratching your head trying to figure out where your space went, but for (probably on the order of) 360 days out of the year they lie unused. Obviously, YMMV, but this has been my experience in heavy "home" use of my computer, though I do use this system to prepare lectures for work and to write my dissertation on top of mucking about with software.

An aside: have spent two days uninstalling software - up to 80 at this point - and freed up 6 GB of space that way...
2669
Hmmm... interesting, Curt. Thanks for sharing that. Did you write to the author only, or have you installed and tried the app as well?

Here's a link to the Doug Knox script I was talking about above: http://www.dougknox....xp_hotfix_backup.htm
2671
Well... there are scripts to remove Windows update uninstallation files and there is the option to compress your harddrive, but I'm with superboyac! If you *do* figure out how to get your money for nothing and your chicks for free, let us know! Will you? Please...

EDIT: dang! Missed a sentence fragment here and a comma there... Corrected now

Forward's Law: never let the facts get in the way of a good story.[/i][/b][/color]
(at least it's called that on the  Ask Dr. SETI website )

Heh, heh, and I've heard a variant attributed to T.H. Huxley, in reference to, er, someone or other who's name escapes me, who he described as defining "tragedy" as a good theory destroyed by fact.

General Software Discussion / Re: Context menu Antivirus
« Last post by Darwin on June 16, 2008, 03:19 PM »
Guys, I tried Bitdefender, but it doesnt seem to function without its services/background processes loaded :(

Hmmm... perhaps I was wrong about that? I HAVE done this with Webroot, though. I own licences for both it and BitDefender and at one time ran BitDefender as my Real-time AV and Webroot as a schedulted Quick AV scanner and my general purpose Antipsyware app. However, I got fed up of BitDefender losing all of my settings (apparently at random) and losing my registration every couple of weeks. Drove me nuts and became intolerable when I realised that this results in Real-time protection being disabled

I now run Webroot on my main machine (XP Pro) and thus far have had no problem with BitDefender on my backup notebook (Win2k). The possibility that the two may have been in conflict on my main computer has not escaped me, though I haven't pursued it at all...

There are two kinds of people in the world: Those who divide everybody into two kinds of people, and those who don't.

My favourite variant of this is:

There are three kinds of people in the world: those who can add and those who can't.

Have no fear, Tom! Restoring my system from an Acronis Image has been completely devoid of drama in the more than three years that I've been using True Image.
