Finished Programs / Re: IDEA: Make window transparent when moving it.
« Last post by nudone on September 30, 2006, 12:34 AM »
there's plenty of free utils that can do this - i thought someone would have mentioned one by now.

OR, i might be just mistaking it with the way nvidia cards can do it with the options they add to the display properties config.

if i remember the name of a program that does it, i'll post again.

just wanted to welcome Mark to the forum - i was wondering who markf was and his five minute rule - i would never have guessed it was the Mark Forster.

it's fantastic to have you around, Mark. i hope you have time to visit again (and again).

drool, gibber, gibber. curls up in corner and starts muttering - then starts trying to snatch at imaginary codies flying around head.

i have the same problem - and i bet it's very common. as Forster says in DIT, people find it almost impossible just to do one item that they planned the night before.

i gave up writing a short list of 'will-do' things the night before because i only completed it once out of about a weeks trial.

why is it so easy to fail. well, i'm stepping into the realms of philosophical gobbledygook but i think you are a different person when you wake up the next day - i have been making 'best intentions plans' for years - just before i retire to bed. can't really think of many that i ever got on with the following day.

one thing i do think is crucial that Forster touches on - don't do anything on impulse. think about it first then act upon it. as you mention, he says to write everything down first. but this isn't really practical for a lot of impulse thoughts/actions (maybe he doesn't say to write everything down, i've forgotten).

one thing i'd like to propose we all try at some point during the experiment which i think will demonstrate to ourselves just how out of control we are (or not, if you have a lot of will-power)...

taking Forster's 'delayed action upon impulse thoughts' idea a step further - try attempting to override a bad habit you posses. if you are perfect then fair enough, you won't be able to try it, but for the rest of us mere mortals i suggest you try and restrain a bad habit - just pause before you act upon it. think about it and then make the choice to not carry it out. see if you can - AND if you can, then see if you can do it regularly.

i've been trying it and i can manage about a day or two. i think it's a good 'strength' building exercise to develop greater will-power and self-control - which are going to benefit you controlling other impulse thoughts. let's face it - if you can override a bad habit you've got a good foundation to build upon for other tasks you set yourself.

these are the first set of wallpapers featuring Cody the DC mascot.

where it seems appropriate, i'll do a dual screen version, otherwise there will just be a standard 4:3 ratio size and a widescreen 16:10 size.

i'll do another set soon (set 02 is almost complete).

i hope you like them.

anyone not tried to tackle their chosen task yet?

if you remind us of how you are doing it with photoshop elements 4 then someone might be able to describe a similar system with acdsee - albeit a bit more fiddly.
2669
i agree. this is how i've done most things, well, maybe not most things - just the tasks that i felt had something at stake, i.e. pride. Forster does have good advice on it and, if i remember correctly, there is even better advice in 'The Now Habit' by Neil Fiore - he really does get to the psychological roots of the problem (but as he's quoting from many sources i'm sure there are numerous other books with the same advice).

somehow we have learnt that it is 'good' to live day-to-day trying to ignore the dreaded task/project. like trying to maximise you enjoyment whilst you can and over the longest period you can maintain - and yet knowing full well that you are going to suffer when you finally must get the deed done.

i think this is due to our innate programming (okay, maybe not everyone). we have an absolutely terrible comprehension of time and what the future means - one month from now may as well be several lifetimes away. my primitive brain (Forsters nice idea) really doesn't understand the future - i'm not that convinced my rational brain understands the future either. which inevitably means that i can happily convince myself that at some point, days, months, years from now, i'll be able to behave in a completely unnatural manner and become super motivated and get the job done - either that or i just believe the task won't need doing as it will have magical disintegrated.

i'm a fan of evolutionary psychology and i like to think that we might find help if we looked at why we behave in the way we do regarding procrastination. i suspect our ancestors learnt it was the best way of survival - leave things until someone else does them or they simply no longer require doing. unfortunately, the modern world isn't built around the same lists of jobs to do as back then.

we are perhaps unique in that we have become animals of the future; we focus a great deal of our energy and life on what will hopefully happen without having the understanding of how to make the present become that future wish. if anything, our understanding of the passage of time is completely stunted. we can comprehend that tomorrow will arrive automatically without any intervention from ourselves - the problem is that we confuse this inevitability with our own plans and goals, believing they will come to life automatically too.
2670
5 minutes a day - noooooo problem.

but i admit i'm half way through the day and haven't spent five minutes on the task yet.

plenty of time left.

i think you have made an important addition to the 7 day challenge - definitely do not leave it to the last minute. enough of the positive phrases and niceties - if you leave it to the last minute then you are a fool, a complete and utter idiot - forget about being a procrastinator - you are a total jerk. and it's so easy to be the opposite - just don't leave it to the last minute/day.

arjendk, as for the techniques in DIT, i agree they are wonderful - when you use them - and that is part of my low discipline problem.
2671
so where do i get self-discipline from?

before starting any of this GTD stuff i knew that self-discipline/motivation and will power where the essential elements to doing what you want to do - the actual systems that are floating around don't really strike me as anything special - hence so many people never fully mastering them or abandoning them after a while.

it seems you are either self disciplined or you are not. is it possible to change from one to the other, well, of course it is - but without some kind of external force training you to become disciplined then how are you going to achieve it on your own.

anyone can be disciplined for a short period or during some exceptional circumstance. i'm not interested in the techniques that allow you to achieve that - i think they can be labelled as snake oil.

i know what i should be doing, i know what i want to be doing, so why am i not doing it. during the novelty period things are fine but it's nothing to do with being disciplined.

i'm going to stop here as i'm not contributing anything other than bad vibes.
2672
app, what you say makes a lot of sense. i'm just wondering if perhaps a 'shock to the system' with an abrupt change might also help?

i can see that changing things too quickly is going to hurt, but that's why Pavlina is recommending to change your environment so there is less chance of failure. avoiding depression i'm not so sure of.

Nudone, are you changing your view on Pavlina?

i'm not sure. i've always liked some things he says and disliked others. perhaps my prejudice is that he tries to cover EVERYTHING, so i expect an answer to EVERYTHING. like the revelation about 'self-discipline', he tells me something i didn't expect but doesn't give me the complete answer i'd like to hear. i appreciate that is my problem and not his.

excellent.

i will not ask how far you've got by the end of sunday - you can elevate your stress levels by procrastinating a little longer if you wish, but i will expect that everyone has made a start by the end of monday.

good luck to everyone. i'm sure that now we've focused on what to do it will be done. you may like to spend a little time meditating on how you will do it...

... if you can imagine it completed and the steps that were required to do it, then all you need do is transform those steps into real life actions. simple isn't it. i'm sure i must have read that in a book.

good, i was hoping you'd be up for it.

anyone else?

this needs to be focusing on a real procrastinated task - one that you keep avoiding and probably is starting to make you really annoyed that you haven't touched it.

right, i've had enough. i'm sick of reading about how to do things and then finding it still not make enough difference for anything to really change.

so, i challenge you, by the end of this month i will have completed a task that i find impossible to get on with - and for it to be a proper challenge i'd like to see someone else attempt to do the same with something they are procrastinating over.

my task will probably take 7 days to complete, i'm not sure of the hours but it's one of those 'project' type tasks that everyone makes and then sticks on the shelf for another year. i admit that i started the project not long back but now i've got to that stage where i'll look for any excuse not to do it.

is anyone prepared to take the challenge - by the end of september you'll have either completed or made serious inroads into a project you currently cannot contemplate.

go on, i dare you. put your money where your mouth is.
