yes it was intentional.  the reason is quite crazy.

when testing on vista, the updater was freaking out and causing all kinds of UAC alerts.

it turns out (as Taichimaster discovered) that the reason for this was that vista tries to be clever about handling setup/install programs specially with their new account elevation stuff, and when vista was seeing the word update in the program name, this was triggered.  so i had to rename to uppdater to avoid this :)

Perhaps the text on the "DL & install" button should reflect the actual operation to be performed.
good idea.

the rsvp date is very flexible, so don't feel like it's too late.

what if i restored ctrl+left and right and left alt+left and right to do this custom behavior in farr.

when on earth to you need to put the cursor back a word without deleting it when using farr?

the updater currently doesnt know how to install zip updates (like the plugins use); im working on this now.
so basically it just informs you when they need update and takes you to their web page.
(the reason the other plugins "seemed" to update is because they were included in the latest farr update)

jgp's idea for testing is good -
i think i will also add an ability to see what alias/plugin created each result for debugging such things.

jdmarch,

there is an option on how you want it to install things...
if you set it to run the installers, you shouldn't get that behavior.
it sounds like its set on "open browser to download"

Living Room / Nice Article: Pay-for-blogging site raises questions
« Last post by mouser on July 11, 2007, 01:50 PM »
I found this a nice balanced article that raises some interesting question and talks about sites paying people to write content that maximize ad revenue.

Does it exist to game Google search results and generate revenue through Google's AdWords advertising service by displaying contextual ads next to the copy? Or is it a new kind of media site, chock-full of original articles written mostly by average folk about everything from presidential pardons and karaoke to smoker's guilt and ventriloquism?

Nice followup essay:

So, to recap, the recipe for a disaster is easy: hire marketers with no authentic voice, ask them to pimp offal, and when they're busted for it make them force out an apology in which they blame it on their authentic voice.

Updated with a few important changes that make it behave much better in terms of multiple instances and on Vista.

What about a tag system?
This is a very good idea, and one we've flirted with in the past.
A tag system would make it much easier for people to find posts of interest to them on a specific topic.
It might be time to start implementing this..

Yes, i'm trying to think the best way to do this.. keep the suggestions coming.

im about to release an improved update checker and i will modify drag+drop to handle this case --
basically it expects you to drop a folder or .dcupdate file, and i assume you are dropping the exe?
im just going to make the updater drop the parent folder, which is the best thing to do i think.

thanks for reminding me about this brewmonkey -- i have been meaning to fix it and now that farr is about to be released it's time to take care of all these loose ends of minor fixes in my other apps.  i will make it easy to cancel a scrolling capture and try to make it do better at capturing as well.

Speaking just for myself:

I like smf.
We have donated to smf repeatedly.
I do not have a problem with paying for smf if they go to a pay model that is reasonable.

My concerns in this case are not about paying for stuff - i'm just objecting to what i perceive as an inappropriate attitude and approach from smf management, which i fear may be a sign of them moving in wrong direction in terms of management and maintenance.

Having said that, i agree with wordzilla that it is unwise to be so dependent on software that could overnight move to a license that would make it unusable.  But i think jgp's point is also valid -- we could always just stick with our current version if they did that.
