Living Room / Re: Steve Jobs is dead.
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on October 06, 2011, 01:53 PM »
Steve Jobs was a man like any other.  But because he didn't (Publicly, or in his name?) donate massive sums of money to "help" the 3rd world (Can anybody truly say that any amount of money is actually helping them? - Things seem no different now, than they did 25 years ago...), people are hating on him.

I am not a fan of Apple, nor do I own (or WANT to own) any of their products...but all this said, it doesn't make Steve; Evil!

His death, must have been one of a very painful nature, as I imagine most cancer cases would be, and I would not wish that on my worst enemy.

On the note of him not 'Giving To Charity' for any of you people who are "Hating" on someone who just passed...for reasons NONE OTHER than his lack of charitable nature:

Remember, that when you die, no matter what the cause...If you did not give at least 25% of your net income to charity (Even if you had created tens of thousands of jobs {no pun intended}...)...you shall be remembered ONLY for not giving money to UNICEF or w/e.

Congratulations to some of the people on this thread for showing their true nature...In really shows, in true light, just how fucked up some people's perspective of the world, really is...Well done indeed.

R.I.P Steve Jobs, 1955 - 2011
You will be missed

I'm just glad they haven't figured out a way to lump their ads on my downloaded youtube videos.

Give them time...Soon they will be edited into the videos themselves during upload...Can almost guarantee that.

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox 7 is out
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on September 28, 2011, 09:39 AM »
Well, to be fair I don't think a lot of user-visible changes have happened in the past couple of Chrome releases.

It's just that Chrome silently updates in the background without bothering you with it, whereas Firefox is still using the "OMG there is an update" dialogs and the "What's New" page showing nothing new after the update :-[.

And the automatic updating in the background is really great, especially when it comes to flash player. I am so sick of updating flash player manually for IE and FF.

Opera has nice little "Ohai, theres an update if you want it, but I wont bother you again if you don't" dialog that opens at the bottom right or the window when it spots theres a new version.  If you want it, it quietly does its thing, then asks you if you feel like restarting your browser and re-opening all your current tabs so its like it never happened.

Its kind of cute really, sorta like when your Grandmother asks you if your feeling OK, but doesn't want to push the issue, so asks you in her "Quiet Voice"

Does anyone else think of this word when they hear about Windows 8 "metro apps"?

well, metrosexual is the only other time I've seen the word metro used in English - so a definitive yes there.

  • Metro (Was the name of a car)
  • Metro (Is the name of a free newspaper in Manchester)
  • Metro (Public Transport)
  • Metro (An Abbreviation of Metropolitan)
  • Metro (A Radio Station in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England)
  • Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), the leading film studio during the first half of the 20th century
  • Metro, former code name of the XML Paper Specification, Microsoft's document framework
  • Metro (design language), crafted by Microsoft for Windows Media Center, Zune, and Windows Phone 7
  • GlassFish Metro, an opensource web service stack that is part of the GlassFish project

To name but a few other examples of its use ;-)

I wonder when consoles are going to move more towards this method of "Pay2Win"

Surely cant be long now...look at how much money these micro-payment games actually make...I, myself have been known to download a F2P game, only to purchase extras to make my character stronger, or look better, or just for the sheer hell of it...yet if they had put a price tag on the game to download and play...I would not have bothered spending more than 2 minutes on their website

Ha, that is pure awesome!

I have found myself turning to torrents recently due to my DVD Drive exploding.  Not sure on the legality of Buying a physical copy of a game, and then torrenting it so you don't need to use the DVD to install play...but I am beyond the point of caring...

Most of the time, I would think that people simply pirate for 2 reasons:

• 1. Sheer lack of money and the game they really want, they simply cannot afford
• 2. Because nobody can really get a feel for a game in a crappy little demo (Which generally contain unique content/missions NOT found in the actual game...

When the person is doing it for Reason #1, they are not likely to ever buy an official copy (But things can change)

People who do it for the second reason are far more likely to purchase a game they like.

DRM also drive the piracy market, so the "Anti-Piracy" methods used by big games companies are actually more like a "F##k you hackers", which Hackers then see as a bigger challenge...crack the game...and torrent it even quicker than they would have otherwise done.

(Just my 2 cents!)

Well, I actually felt kinda good about this until I saw Stephen's... Now I'm just jealous!!

Please don't be...

You get very spoiled with a 100meg connection, and when it isn't working at full speed, and you find yourself on anything below 50-70, you get VERY annoyed, and people just don't understand how, or why your frustrated with downloading at ONLY 6500kb/s via HTTP.  :-\   8)

Oh, thank you - I feel so much better now.   ;)

Jim

 :(  ;D ;D

The way I have it worked out, is that if a company offers you a 20MB connection, this means, if you CONNECT at that 20mb speed, you will actually DOWNLOAD at 10% of that speed, and upload at 10% of your DOWNLOAD speed.

That seems to be pretty accurate. Well, maybe 5% of what's advertised... but potato hand grenade. Y'know... :P

The local look:

The more realistic view:

Rated for 10 to 20 Mbps *AS ADVERTISED*. However, everything in the advertising is misleading. Purposefully misleading. e.g.:

ADSL2+ Speeds:
Optimal ADSL2+ speeds require compatible ADSL2+ modem and filters. Around 70% of TPG ADSL2+ customers can achieve speeds greater than 10Mbps. Actual speeds will vary due to many factors including distance from the local telephone exchange, the quality of the customer's copper phone line, cabling and equipment.

While technically partially true, it's obvious that they're trying to mislead people. i.e. ADSL is asynchronous, and down/up differ, so stating a speed of 10 Mbps implies both up and down, however, the reality is very different. Conclusion: they're misleading intentionally because nobody in the industry is that stupid as to confuse ADSL for (synchronous) DSL. When you call them for support, they'll confess that the expected up speed is 1 Mbps. I really don't appreciate having to dig that far to get basic information. :(

It would be one thing to be upfront and honest, but that just ticks me off. Like just how hard is it to be honest?

Anyways, that's better than I was seeing before, so I'm much happier with that. And still very jealous of a few people in here~! :D

The way I have it worked out, is that if a company offers you a 20MB connection, this means, if you CONNECT at that 20mb speed, you will actually DOWNLOAD at 10% of that speed, and upload at 10% of your DOWNLOAD speed.

Not sure if thats the exact, but certainly seems true for my line:

When it works properly, I get...

100mb/s connection
  - 10MB/s Max DOWN Speed
  - 1MB/s UP Speed

Again...this is depending on a few factors like where I am downloading/uploading from and if my internet is behaving in an optimal state, and how many times I have kicked the router that day.

Torrents will obviously download at a much much higher rate than HTTP downloads and I can't actually figure out the Down/Up ratio for them as its different for literally every single one.
