However, I also like having the peace of mind of just being able to turn my brain off and just do stuff without worrying about it.

If you have XP or Vista, install Windows SteadyState, configure it correctly (read the FAQ and handbook), then turn off brain and do stupid things. Don't forget to reboot when you are finished brainlessly trashing your system.  ;)

From what I understand, if you have Win7, it's supposed to be already built into the OS, but I am not sure what they are calling it.

According to this link, it is being classified as malicious: http://reclassify.ur...com/onlinequery.aspx

Unfortunately, you can't submit feedback and request a reclassification unless you are one of their customers with one of their security products.

But they have a forum thread where a Trend Micro employee volunteers to manually submit reclassification requests after checking your site (in his spare time), without you having to pay for one of their products first.

Is it true that if you buy a Dell business machine that it doesn't come loaded with crapware?

It's a Vostro, so I am assuming it's a business machine just like my Vostro 410 desktop, which didn't come preloaded with any crapware (except some Google Desktop crap which was easy enough to uninstall). I never checked any of the options for them to pre-install any of the crap they offered, when I ordered the PC, so no antivirus, no Adobe Reader, and none of the other stuff.

I happened to be in a store yesterday and spotted 2 products from 3M that are clear double-sided tape with backing paper.

The first is a poster tape that comes on a roll: http://www.scotchbra...RQ4PQRgl0PSTHG9B00bl

The other is mounting squares that are pre-cut: http://www.scotchbra...RG50RHglDCPX19Q151bl

Hope this helps.

General Software Discussion / Re: 27 Good Reasons to Love Linux
« Last post by app103 on September 01, 2010, 12:15 AM »
A friend sends you an email with a PDF file attached: curse, do not have a program to read it. You need to go online, find a site that will download Adobe Reader (or another PDF viewer) download, install, maybe even restart. Do you think it over?. Attached to the email your friend will find a text file format. DOC. Your Windows can not even read that. Now or go to buy a copy of Microsoft Office (€ 500), or simply download OpenOffice (free), but you'll still need to find it, download it (I hope you have a broadband connection), install, etc.

That's not how it works for me. I just click that "view" link in Gmail and view it in Google Docs. No downloading or installing needed. I don't even have to download the PDF or DOC file.  :)

Linux has many music players (including Amarok, Rythmbox, Banshee, etc..), And some of them are exceptional. AmaroK Take for example (see screenshot): organizes and plays your favorite music, learn what pieces you like best and automatically find their title (and text) on the Internet. If still not enough, is for you, including CD cover art and author information!

Yet, I could not find a player I liked and resorted to running Trout under WINE to get what I really wanted.

With Linux, everything is easier. Linux already has a list of a huge number of programs. If you need some new program, simply open the Add /Remove Programs "on the left are the categories, click and right you have a list of programs that category.
Click on one and get a description of the program (it is also indicated the popularity with the number of stars). If you like you do not have to do is tick the left of the name, then click "Apply and OK. All done, now Linux will download the program, install it and settle in the category of membership. Linux does everything, you just choose what you want.

Sure, if you already know exactly what you want or like playing guessing games. But if you want to make informed choices, just like when on Windows, you are going to have to Google for info and read plenty.

And no more reboots? I reboot more in Ubuntu than I do in WinXP, and it's not always about updates and upgrades either. YMMV, but my experiences have been that the current Ubuntu is about as unstable as WinME with an ATI graphics card.  :o

(want it to look and work like Win7 or OSX? no problem)

Yes, problem...big problem. You can not have a taskbar under Linux that looks and acts like the Windows taskbar, in all of its glory, with all of its functionality. At least I can't. And that's a feature that's very important to me.

Support is universal

Universally non-existent unless you are paying someone per incident or have a commercial support contract. Otherwise you are at the mercy of the moods and whims of unpaid volunteers on forums and IRC channels, many of which have big egos and will be quite rude with you, because their self-image, huge egos, and feelings of superiority depend on making you feel like a stupid idiot who shouldn't be using a computer at all.

Lots of luck getting and installing Linux drivers for your wireless card, and getting that to work...you are more or less on your own to figure it out. I hope you really like puzzle games because this one has a reputation of being a real whopper.

Under Windows, if I have a problem installing drivers for some hardware that came with my PC, help is just a phone call away, and I won't have to pull out a credit card to get it.

And no malware? safe and secure? really? are you sure?

http://forums.unreal...viewtopic.php?t=6562
http://www.mozilla.o...g/security/announce/

I am sure there are tons more ways to exploit tons more applications that run on Linux.

Just because it's open source, does not make it safe and secure.

Free software and games

Windows has that too.  :P

No more piracy, registration, validation, verification, or cost

Not all versions of Linux are free. Not everything open source is free. And proprietary closed source software for Linux does exist. In fact, I happen to be developing some, myself.

Experts-exchange you can see the answers if you visit the site via google search results. Some are actually good but as far as 'business model' goes it's pretty much anti-spirit-of-internet

Does that still work?  I'd read somewhere that this was because of the way that google cached the site, but they'd complained and google stopped caching certain sites.

They got slapped by Google for cloaking. In order to stay in the index, they have to show Google users the same page that gets shown to the Googlebot.

You can also reach the full content if you change your browser's useragent to match that of the Googlebot. (firefox users can do that easily with this) This means you can bookmark pages and go back to them later, and see the same thing you did the first time.

Living Room / Google PowerMeter: One step closer to the Google Toilet
« Last post by app103 on August 30, 2010, 11:39 PM »
Remember this comical video?

Well, Google just moved a little closer to that being a reality by introducing Google PowerMeter.

If you are a customer of a limited number of power suppliers (only 3 in the world right now), then Google can now track your electricity usage and make suggestions to help you save energy. And they are making a game of it by awarding badges if you follow their suggestions, encouraging you to compete with your friends and family to see who can collect the most badges the fastest... all while providing them with your energy consumption data.

If you're an old-school Metallica fan, you'll either love it or hate it.
Either way, you're not going to believe it...

Love it! (and so does my daughter)

Thanks for that.  :D

I love cover tunes when the artist doesn't try to be so true to the original that it's like a cheap knock-off. I prefer when an artist brings something truly original to it that makes it just as much theirs as the original artist. If you can't "own" the song you are covering, why even bother covering it?

about.com
We all know and hate this website.  It tries to answer every question known to mankind, yet accomplishes so staggeringly little with that task.  In true shitty fashion, it makes sure to be at the top of any google search.

delphi.about.com is actually quite useful. (I guess that would be the exception huh?)

If the rest of about.com were like this particular subdomain, it wouldn't be on your list.

Just a few quick comments...

  • Fried Babelfish has two developers, not just one, Krishean and myself. We both have our own websites, we don't share one. If and when Fried Babelfish has its own home page, it will most likely be on my website and not Krishean's, although Krishean may post the code for his part of it on his site at some point (but not the entire application). I know this may complicate things, but sometimes that's what happens when developers become friends and work together.

  • At the bottom of the page where it says it is donationware, there is a link to find out what that means, but it leads to a page that doesn't mention donationware.

  • You are direct linking to the file attachments on the forum, and those links will change if we update the software, resulting in dead links on your site.

And from the description:
Fried Babelfish is a small desktop translator. It’s not perfect and the translated text can contain some errors (especially grammar) but this is a common thing. So far, there is no perfect translator (even the popular Google translator has its own flaws).

But Fried Babelfish is Google Translator, and it says that later on in the description.

Unlike an online translator, Fried Babelfish is way easier to use.

It is an online translator, just not in your browser. You can not use it offline.

If I remember correctly, when opening large files in Notepad, Windows will alert you and give you the option to open it in Wordpad instead, which is much better at handling larger text files.

Ahhh, I know what the problem might be - I have it set that a new tab opens when I use the addressbar of the current tab (maybe a TabMixPlus option, cant remember offhand). That would screw up the java script I reckon (like the way you cant open java scripts in a new tab).

I'll stick with the bookmarklet (actually I've added it to my homepage - that way I can use the homepage icon & dont need another toolbar open)

I have mine configured the same way, except I am using Tabkit.

You may still be able to use it with a keyword from the addressbar. Try using alt+enter to make it work in the current tab instead of using just enter, which causes it to open in a new tab. (or just click the little green arrow on the far right of the addressbar after typing in the keyword, instead of hitting enter)

This is far better than a dedicated button, since a button can only do a single thing, while you can use keywords for all of your frequently used bookmarks, without cluttering up your toolbars.

Living Room / Re: HOSTS File for malware prevention
« Last post by app103 on August 26, 2010, 10:44 AM »
What you need is an ad-blocker for your browser combined with anti-malware software.

I recommend Ad Muncher (munches more than just ads, in more than just browsers) along with whatever hosts file entries your anti-malware may want to add. (remember that neither are a substitute for a good antivirus, and nothing is a good substitute for common sense...you need all of it!)

And please, please, please, run noscript and turn off Java in your browser unless you are about to use a site you know you can trust that needs it.
2641
This is version 9.2.4, not v10 like the description says. After installing it, they will offer you v10 as an update, but you will not get it free. It's only a trial. So, if you just want the free version, don't try to update it.
2642
It's very much worth it's own thread

If you're using Firefox you can give the bookmarklet a keyword (I set mine to "read"), then type the keyword in the address bar when you're on the page you want to clean up.
[...] Summary: Ctrl-L, type keyword for bookmarklet and hit enter.
~
I cant seem to get that to work here - where exactly do you type the keyword? Does it go before/after/replace the address? I presume the quotes arent part of the keyword? (I did do a quick search and most related info is re searching..). Thanks...

Assign the keyword to the bookmarklet, first.

Right click the bookmarklet and select properties. Then put the keyword you want to use in the correct box, as shown here:

Screenshot - 8_26_2010 , 6_04_01 AM.png

Once you have done that, replace whatever is in the addressbar with your keyword and hit enter.

umm, i know what you mean. at least, you can be thankful that your own machine is set up "just right". using other computers without my hotkeys installed does just make me think how glad i'll be to get back on my own machine.

I wish! I have a dual boot machine and I can't make heads or tails about how to get the mouse to work the way I want under Ubuntu, which makes me more than happy to reboot to Windows.

But, i do find that i quite like using the cursor keys at the expected keyboard location - they are the sort of keys i use without looking at or thinking about - it's all by habit. so, if they weren't in their typical place, i might find it annoying. which means i'd not risk getting the Evoluent - well, i would risk it if it had illuminated keys, i wouldn't be able to resist trying it.

I think all of their products take some getting used to, retraining new habits to replace the old. I noticed with my mouse that I have developed some habits that don't carry over to other (normal) mice and/or operating systems too well. Now I am annoyed when I have to live without all the features of my Evoluent mouse or when the OS doesn't support it fully and assigns different functions (forward/back) to my "copy/paste" buttons*.

*select text on a web page, click thumb button to copy...wait a min...what's it doing? ahhhhh! Now I am not on that page any more  :(

What do you guys think about the security of such a site. I mean it says that only you can access your entries. But it doesn't say anything about encryption for example.

I would approach it from this perspective:

Unless I was willing to publish what I am writing, either publicly on a blog or in book form, I wouldn't be too likely to write about it and send it in. This is not the place for any of your "dirty little secrets". I don't think encryption is necessary. After all, blog posts published in draft mode, in all the major blogging applications like Wordpress or Blogger, aren't encrypted either.

But as ads continue their creep into everything, I'm reminded how prescient the movie Idiocracy (2006) really was. They're even running onscreen YouTube popup ads in between plays during the St. Louis Rams preseason football game last week. It was maddening. And if I listen to a baseball radio broadcast, the announcer is busy trying to read an ad in between pitches. These instances alone confirm App's insight.

Let's not even get into what they are doing to our children's minds.

Ok, let's get into it (I can't resist).

Once upon a time the cartoon came first and the merchandising came later. It was an afterthought to capitalize on the things kids liked. (things like Bugs Bunny and Flintstone vitamins come to mind)

Then somewhere back in the 80's someone had this "stroke of genius" and decided to create programming to sell specific products. It was the first "infomercials" and our children were the target audience. The toy came first and was followed with a crappy low budget cartoon designed to make kids want it, and interrupted with more ads to sell even more junk. I think my first exposure to this exploitative type of advertising (that I can remember) was with Transformers, Maple Town, and Strawberry Shortcake.

And it has become much worse since then. They keep doing it because it works. Make a kid want something and they will relentlessly pester their parents till they get it. And the parents give in. Maybe not all the time, but enough to make it the most effective form of advertising there is.

And it's all to sell pure junk. The best toys don't have cartoons for them. There are no cartoons for Legos! It doesn't need one to make it sell!

@JavaJones:

If that turns out to be the future of television, I might just start watching again.

I hope it didn't mess up your work app103.
Sorry about it's failure to perform.

No apologies necessary. It was worth a shot...anything is worth a shot at this point, since I can't find any volunteers willing to design a new logo for the app, and the original is too small to work with (32x32), and looks really bad when enlarged. (and I don't have Adobe Illustrator to try that, can't afford it)

I have been trying to redraw it in Paintshop Pro, as a vector, but my hand has been very unsteady lately and I just can't do it. It just ends up looking a mess.
