Living Room / Amazon to expand their payment system to compete with PayPal?
« Last post by mouser on August 01, 2007, 12:08 PM »
We here have actually been using Amazon's Honor System to accept donations for quite some time, and they charge very reasonable fees.  So i'm looking forward to this.

Look for a launch announcement by Amazon this week or next of a new web service around payments, adding to their S3 (storage), EC2 (virtual server) and other services. They’ve been quietly testing the service, which will compete with PayPal and Google Checkout, for a few weeks.

Official Announcements / Site of the Month for August 2007: NirSoft.net
« Last post by mouser on August 01, 2007, 09:49 AM »
Our site of the month for August is one that has been mentioned many times on our forum, but is long overdue for some official accolades and recognition from us: NirSoft.net:

nirsoft.png

In July of 2006, Microsoft aquired the SysInternals team who had demonstrated incredible knowledge of Windows with their small freeware utilities.  It's been over a year since then and Microsoft should get on a phone to the NirSoft folks and make them a similar offer.

NirSoft is doing amazing work.  Their power utilities for windows reach into the very guts of the operating system and do things no other utilities can do.  And they are all free.  Our only warning is that you please don't visit their site unless you have some serious time to kill.  If you are one of those people who love to use programs that let you see what is really happening behind the scenes on your computer, a visit to the NirSoft site is going to be a bit like getting a visit from santa claus on crack.

Some of the tools NirSoft makes are completely unique and wonderfully surprising.  Some of our favorites include:
  • OfficeIns, a tool for viewing and disabling Microsoft Office Add-Ins
    officeins.gif
  • ZipInstaller, an ingenius tool for "installing" programs that are packaged in zip files without their own installers
    zipinst_install.gif
  • ShellExView, a tool for viewing and managing file shell extensions
    shexview.gif
  • ShellMenuView, for investigating and managing the right-click menu items in your system
    shellmenuview.gif
  • Volumouse, a tool for controlling your sound volume using the mouse wheel
    volumouse.gif
  • NirCmd, a great commandline tool that can do all sorts of useful things like shutting down windows, changeing sound volume, etc., (very useful for calling from other tool (we use it in FARR)
  • SmartSniff, a tool for reconstructing network traffic conversations
    smsniff.gif
  • And their newest utility, GDIView, which lists GDI resources in use.
    gdiview.gif

They also have a ton of password recovery tools, browser investigation tools, and much more.

Rarely if ever has a collection of such powerful utilities for Windows been gathered together in one place.  And they are free! Unbelievable. What can we say besides Bravo to NirSoft, we salute you.</p>

General Software Discussion / Re: Win-Get: Anyone tried this?
« Last post by mouser on August 01, 2007, 08:46 AM »
Is it possible that DCUpdater could use it's database?
extremely possible.

Justice has been investigating these kinds of programs, and he and i are going to work together to identify the best features of these tools.

And my current plan is to try to make dcupdater (or a close relative of it) be able to read as many of these kinds of database formats as possible so it can be compatible.

Developer's Corner / Short Article: When To Dump That Great Idea
« Last post by mouser on August 01, 2007, 12:20 AM »
Short but useful to be reminded of this sutff occasionally.

A while ago, you had an idea for a new company that would change the world. You stayed up all night feverishly sketching your plans for global domination.

Yet there you are, months later, still sitting in your cubicle, that brilliant flash a distant memory.

Wake up: Not every idea--even a great one--turns into a money machine. In fact, it's often just as useful to know when to dump a good idea as it is to pursue one--if only so you can get to work on that next "great" idea.

Here are three ways to know when enough is enough.

Find And Run Robot / FARR 2 Public Release postponed from July to August
« Last post by mouser on July 31, 2007, 11:10 PM »
After a feverish month of work on FARR v2, i've decided to push back the official public release another month.

The currently available alpha version is still available to anyone who wants it and is very stable.

I've decided to postpone the official release because I want it to be as smooth an experience as i can make it when it is finally given out to the public, and we aren't quite there yet.  Plus I still have some minor work to do in making the DcUpdater tool as friendly as I can.

So, if you want to start using version 2 don't hesitate to message me on the forum or email me ([email protected]) and i will happily provide you the download link.

Thank you for your understanding,
-mouser

So i select some quality and usable rounded corners with CSS techniques for you to have the best choices.

I've uploaded a new version (1.18.01) but im not going to upload the file that would make everyone's updater update itself, since i expect to have to release minor fixes in the next day or so.

This new version has major changes to the look and feel, but i haven't added any pad file stuff yet.  You will notice however that there is a new tab for programs not yet installed but available for installation.

Screenshot - 7_30_2007 , 11_48_31 PM.png

Version 1.18.01 - July 30th, 2007
  • All options are now in a separate dialog.
  • Main form now has two tabs, one for installed packages, one for available packages.
  • New simple mode button.
  • Self-upgrade now takes place after all other items are updated.
  • New-install update files will be automatically overrided by installed versions of the same pacakge.
  • Checkboxes let you disable items from checking.
  • View menu lets you hide disabled items.
  • Sorted columns are preserved between runs.
  • Added (and set default) an alertbox mode of displaying update from tray.
  • Doesn't pop up on failure to connect to network (better for resuming from sleep issues)
  • Updater was staying minimized to tray if there were updates that had already been reported.

Developer's Corner / Re: Dev-C++ Questions ?
« Last post by mouser on July 30, 2007, 09:48 PM »
as Lahiec says, there are wxwidgets packs for dev-c++, which basically just help you get wxwidgets installed; you don't actually need them. opengl is same situation i believe.  in general expect to have some frustration while you are getting a big library set up but after that it's easy.

i'm a big fan of dev-c++, and like it a lot.  for wxwidgets c++ coding you might also try the free cross-platform and excellent IDE called CodeBlocks: http://www.codeblocks.org/

you probably can code qt apps with dev-c++ though i've not done it and i know qt is more focused on visual studio since they aim for the commercial market.

regarding lua, that's a separate language and you wont be able to use dev-c++ or codeblocks to do lua development, you'll need a lua IDE for that.  Unless you are asking about adding a lua interpreter to your code, in which case you should be able to add that library without much trouble.

to summarize in general:  in plain standard c++, these things like wxwidgets, opengl, and other stuff, are libraries that dont require any special integration into your IDE -- they are just libraries you need to configure/compile/link.

By the way, LaunchBar Commander does allow you to create multiple menus (in your system tray) or docked bars, with their own contents.  You cannot trigger them by hotkeys yet but this is something i plan to add this month.

Don't be fooled by Wordzilla's screenshot of the search-topic edit box, the real power of this feature is that you can now select this from the quick search dropdown box for the topic you are currently browsing, or from *within* the results page.  This is reallly useful for long threads:

good point lanux, though i am in the process of building a new farr2 page, and here is one of the subpages:

probably still a good idea to make a child board dedicated to such things.
