She's one of those perfect 10 women.  I remember her heydey in the 90's, nobody stood a chance.

Glad you found it. I know how frustrating it can be trying to remember a book title.

Re: reliving childhood memories

I wouldn't mind doing some of that myself. But the memories I'm most interested in came a bit later in my childhood. For instance, there was this one time when we were up in New Hampshire after second semester exams were over, and we were at this party where I met this girl (who was a dead ringer for Elizabeth Hurley right down to the smile and British accent!) and...um...yes...sorry...let's forget about that for the moment shall we?
 ;)

I think if we were at the same party, we'd be fighting for the same girl.  Don't forget!  Relish!

Absolutely. Relish indeed.

My GF also politely suggests pickles, honey, whipped cream, and any other "garnish" or fixin' you can think of while you're at it.   ;D
Ha!  Freaking words...

I just love those illustrations by Shepard

Is that the same Mr. Shepard who 'helped' with the Winnie-the-Pooh illustrations? As in "Drawn by me and Mr. Shepard helped." according to Christopher Robin?  :)
Yup.  Same guy.

Found it!!  I went to my parent's house, and I knew I had saved it in a box in the attic.  It's called:
Animal Bedtime Stories
by Lucy Kincaid

Clipboard Image (11).jpg
It's from England, not surprisingly.  I fucking loved these stories as a kid.  Man.  I read it so much that the hardcover had completely fallen off and all I have is the looseleaf papers on the inside.  Freaking awesome illustrations and just the most soothing stories you could imagine.  I am about to relive some pretty bitchin childhood memories.

Hi everyone, please help me remember the title/author/etc. of a book of badger stories I had when I was a kid.  I loved these stories and would read them regularly for years.  I don't remember anything.  Not the plot, not the author or title...nothing to really help.  All I can say is that I had this book in the 80's (probably late 80's).  The stories were heavily illustrated.  It's one of those illustrated books where the illustrations cover the entire page and the paragraphs are just layered over the images.

I did an initial search on google, and couldn't find it.  It's not the popular Wind in the Willows story.  The only way I'd recognize it is if I saw the illustrations.

One of the things that I remember was the elder badger.  There was an elder badger who wore spectacles, and he was a very kind, wise badger.  The stories were lovely and elegant.  In other words, they weren't hilarious or shocking or anything like that.  Very gentle, very loving stories.  I hope I can remember them.  Thanks!

Oh!  And what was that story about the guy who had a friend who was like really gifted in certain ways, or something like that?  ****, that's the worst possible explanation ever!  But I remember one scene: the friends go to a swimming pool, and the guy swims and breaks the record, but nobody other than the friend witnesses it.  Then there was a scene with the guy falling out of a tree and breaking his arm or something.  What was that book?

The book you are talking about is called A Separate Peace by John Knowles.  It's a great book.
There you go!  Yeas, I'm going to reread that.

My most recent books have been:

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - Stevenson (reread)
Huckleberry Finn - Twain (reread)
Flowers for Algernon - Keyes
The Stranger - Camus (reread)
and
Toddler 411

I feel rather out of place in this thread...

You shouldn't.

A few years ago I sat down and started to reread (or sometime just read) all those books they gave us in High School that I didn't really care about. (I was so much more "into technology" at the time.)

And guess what?

I discovered they were all very good books. OK, maybe I wasn't too crazy about Wuthering Heights, but that was the sole exception.

Since books can't change (unless you're living in Ocenia under Ingsoc) the only thing that could have was me.

So I guess I just needed to mature enough - and broaden my interests enough - to be open to what these books were about.

Glad I took the time to do it. Because some of these authors (Dickens, Twain, and Melville in particular) are far too good to pass up.

Just recently, I also was thinking about reading my old high school literature class books.  True, it was a chore at the time.  You know, I've never read Catcher in the Rye?!  I still remember...there were two literature classes, and the one I took skipped that book and read something else like Lord of the Flies.  So I have to read Catcher.  Oh!  And what was that story about the guy who had a friend who was like really gifted in certain ways, or something like that?  Shit, that's the worst possible explanation ever!  But I remember one scene: the friends go to a swimming pool, and the guy swims and breaks the record, but nobody other than the friend witnesses it.  Then there was a scene with the guy falling out of a tree and breaking his arm or something.  What was that book?

I don't agree or disagree with this. I'm very neutral about it.

I will just say that from what I've observed in discussion forums, whenever things like this start becoming issues, it's usually a bad sign.  What was/is great about this place was that it was never an issue before.  Why is it an issue now?  What would happen if we ignore this?  Did something change recently where this has become a problem now?

I know that doesn't help you make a decision, those are my thoughts though.  I guess it's a friendly warning.  To me, stuff like this always points to the beginning of bad breakup type situations.

Somewhat related:
I was recently banned from my Lakers forum.  The technical reason: because I went around the official "rule" of not bypassing the profanity filters (I typed "a-hole").  But the real reason was that I was posting topics that people didn't like to hear.  I never insulted anyone, yet they bashed me to death on a personal level.  I was always polite, and they continued to mock me and insult me.  But because I was asking questions that were uncomfortable, they banned me on a technicality.

Do we really want forums going this way?  I find that people who are usually pretty meek in real life become somewhat of bullies on forums.  The bullies tend to dominate and eventually win.  But the price we pay is the absence of healthy discussions where we get educated and learn interesting things.  Topics become arguments and everyone starts defending themselves and the original topic stops being discussed.  I hope we don't become like that here, because I always felt like DC was the best forum as far as the people here.

I know this is probably overkill, but whatever.

Not reading an EULA can be VERY expensive.

I just put up some screenshots from my Android here:

http://cynic.me/2011...-ipad-2-a-mobile-ad/

$10 per week + $5 to "join". To get a *chance* to win an iPad... OUCH~!

The ad in the game:
 (see attachment in previous post)
The "contest" screen. (composite with comments)
 (see attachment in previous post)
And you KNOW damn well that they're COUNTING on you NOT scrolling down enough or reading the terms. You THINK that you're entering a contest/lottery, but you're not. You're signing up for some stuff. I think that stuff has been in the news before. It's not new.
That makes me so angry.  People should be allowed to sue for stuff like that.

By the way, a sometimes I've done something similar with documents I write for work.  When sending them out for review, I put in a line of text saying, "If you're the first reviewer to mention this sentence, I'll buy you lunch."  I'd say about half the time, I get called on it.  I can't remember where i got the idea - I think it was at my first 'real' job at a transit/traffic consulting firm where someone did this.

Hope you made out better than I did doing almost the same thing at my first real job.

I put a single line in the middle of a paragraph about halfway into a twenty page financial analysis I had just completed. I had offered to buy and bring the first person who saw it their morning coffee for an entire month.

I got called into my manager's office about an hour after I sent it up for approval. After being reminded we were expected to "act professionally at all times" (since this was the "grownup world") he strongly cautioned me against pulling any further "college pranks" if I planned on continuing to work there. I was then sent back to my desk with a red face and my tail between my legs.

But not before my manager also reminded me that, per my offer, I now owed him a month's worth of free coffee. (Black, two sugars please?)

(He made sure he collected on it too.)

Love it!!!

I'm becoming more and more impressed with Acetext.  brilliant app from that guy, as usual.

I think he used to offer a deal if you bought licenses for EditPad Pro and AceText at the same time.
I may just have to do that for my business.  I like both of them very much.

Which makes one wonder why, if they're so well done, they're not more widely used? Chicken and egg problem?

- Oshyan
That's the thing, they are not well done enough to make people jump ship.  They always lack a critical feature here or there, and in the end, I think, "Forget it, I'll just stick to Wordpress."  There's a comfort with WP because so many people use it, you just type in a couple of keywords for any issue in google and the problem is solved.

All I'm saying is that I feel the market is wide open for a CMS platform that will do what WP was able to do.

Yeah, I know. I'm just suggesting that possibly, to do what a good general purpose CMS does, might remove some of the inherent simplicity and ease of use that Wordpress users love. It may be somewhat the nature of more general purpose CMS systems. After all there are 100s, surely one of them would have "gotten it right" and done what you're suggesting, right? Surely Automattic aren't the only ones with a good UI design sense.

- Oshyan
The other benefit of Wordpress is that it is very widely used.  So a lot of solutions to issues are already resolved.  The problem with the other CMS platforms that are relatively well done in my opinion is that they are used by so few people that you will quickly run into an issue that you can't solve without a lot of work.

What exactly would a "wordpress-like CMS system" be? You mean Wordpress, but with all the extra complexity a full-blown CMS needs to do its job? ;)

- Oshyan
There's a couple of threads about this here.  What I mean is something that is pleasant and easy to use like Wordpress, yet offers pretty good flexibility and power when needed, also like Wordpress.  What would be perfect is something like Wordpress, but without the fundamental "blog" philosophy.  What that means for me is simply being able to organize content freely.  Wordpress forces you to organize content chronologically, and to do it differently requires fighting against the true nature of the engine.

No in this case im speaking as an end user -- if you think you a forum is going to be an important part of your website, don't even THINK about using the druapl forum system.

It might still be reasonable to use drupal as your CMS and bridge to another true forum system, but don't even think about using the drupal forum system, it's unbelievably bad.
I'm still waiting for a wordpress-like CMS system to come out.  It will be huge.  I've been waiting for years.  So has tranglos.  Drupal forums are very frustrating.

If you're thinking of doing "work" with the ipad, forget it.  It's just a casual, portable device to have with you.  Check time, check email (not necessarily write email), browse the web, watch some videos, go on facebook.  Anything more than this sort of thing will be frustrating.

There are no workhorse tablets yet.  It's not the fault of Apple or Android, it's just that nobody is doing that yet.  I'm guessing once Microsoft starts going with this (Windows 8?), then we'll be really able to use tablets to do hardcore work.

Well, we have started selling our books.  Check out the website:
http://www.compleximaginary.com/

I've been happy overall with the phpurchase plugin we are using for the shopping cart stuff.  However, we've already run into some limitations that makes me think that I have to change to a more sophisticated, complicated plugin.  Here's the problem:
Calculating shipping costs is a headache.  Fedex has a bunch of excel spreadhseets they use to calculate the shipping to each area.  Phpurchase doesn't have a way to tie into all that data.  As a result, I have to average shipping costs or something like that.  I don't like that.  i want the shipping to be precise and nothing more or less.

Anyone have suggestions or advice?

Don't fight it buddy!  It's a beautiful device.  We don't have to be so black and white with this stuff.  if the ipad fits your needs, get it.  if a desktop klunker fits your needs, get it.  We don't have to act so crazy about it!  I've been very happy with the ipad.

Right, last attempt before I head off OS - if something doesn't work properly you'll have to wait a while longer.

v0.28
Added All Interfaces back.

NOTES:
  • Status of the interface(s) is checked five (5) seconds after the toggle event, so don't expect the tray icon to change immediately.
  • If All Interfaces is selected then if any one (1) of available NICs is enabled then the icon reflects this state irrespective of that NICs connection state, connection state != device state.
eg. If there is no cable plugged into the NIC port but the device is enabled then the icon will be green.

There was no easy/reliable method to check for a LAN connection so I've defaulted to only checking device state.

EDIT: I might change it so that a different colour icon is displayed if there's a mix of (dis|en)abled NICs.  A nice muddy brown for instance.
by the way, I just have to say, my favorite part of this whole thread is being able to follow your thoughts as you describe the process.  I love it.  I can see how you are coming up with your ideas, and how you work through them.  Thanks.
