And, yes, this does, in many (or all) ways, overlap the features added in Vista to do this very thing.

-rubbish. System Restore will NEVER go online to replace or find files.

Isn't this what System Restore is supposed to do?

Quite a lot of "you" guys have said that System Restore cannot be trusted.
And as the thumbnail picture shows, my second most often crashed program is: System Restore!

General Software Discussion / Re: Dopus 10 : Some question about it.
« Last post by Curt on February 09, 2012, 02:49 AM »
You only #think# you want it to exit, but actually you don't!... .  :P sorry!
The reason is of course that DOpus takes up very little resources, when it sits in the tray. If closing it also was exiting it, you would complain that it was too slow launching. Anyway, it has "exit" two places; one in "File", and one in the tray icon's right-click menu.

Consumption when closed to tray:

BTW: I am not a fan of DOpus, merely a user.

Edited: Usually System Restore can help to repair your Operating System. But what if the original restore backup has been corrupted? This is where I expect ReImage to be useful.
------------------------------

An advertisement in Windows Secret newsletter made me aware of Reimage.com: >>Reimage restores your Windows OS to its original potential, reversing corrupted files without harming personal data. Scanning your hardware and software, providing a full diagnosis, Reimage can then repair any damage, replace missing system files with the new ones from our database and restore compromised settings & registry values to their original default. Save 33% - for Windows Secrets Readers!<<

The normal price is $70 / €53 for a year, so I have (of course) not yet tried it, even though I am tempted; my Vista is unstable.

Read http://www.reimagepl...om/how-does-it-work/ and http://www.reimageplus.com/what-it-fix/ to better understand what it does and doesn't.

The first downloaded file is a downloader. The downloaded setup goes directly to temp, so I don't know how big it may be, but it is merely a scanner. It is a little like the anti-malware / anti-virus scanners one can get from one of those companies we usually love to hate, but for one or the other reason I want to trust this one. Maybe I am being naive. The company is Reimage® R&D Center in Ramat Gan, Israel: http://www.reimagepl....com/about-the-team/

The scan resulted in this (click to enlarge):

-I didn't think to test the context menu before reading the two previous posts. Mine is not working either! The reason I didn't test it before was, that I always use Send To > PlayTime, and it works.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to force "Register DLL"?
« Last post by Curt on February 07, 2012, 04:22 PM »
just saying that experts-exchange weren't experts,
so in all I never got an useful answer to my initial question:
Can I somehow force RegSvr32 to register a DLL?  :tellme:

I've just ruined my beloved Explorer, by updating QTTabBar,
because the very important QTFileTools.dll refuses to register (elevated or not).  :(

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: AnVir Task Manager Pro 60% off Today Only
« Last post by Curt on February 06, 2012, 04:13 PM »
The new and very unwanted behaviour from the company doesn't change the fact that the program AnVir Task Manager Pro in my opinion is The Best of the kind. The long absence never meant anything to me, because there was nothing to miss. Support was never needed, and the program can do everything I want it to  and then some. But of course all this may look differently from a another user's point of view. Well, now AnVir was updated.

Version 6.5 released

Postby admin » Fri Feb 03, 2012 7:44 am

New:
1. Added the correct operation of the registry and files on Windows 7 64-bit.
2. Ability to terminate processes that can not be terminated via Task Manager.
3. Added support for Windows 8.

Improvements:
1. Ability to select multiple programs on the Startup tab and then run, or delete several programs.
2. Disk read and write access is shown separately under heavy load in the tray monitoring.
3. Expanded scale on the performance chart.
4. CPU temperature is displayed on the tray icon.
5. Verification of files signatures performs in the background.
Many other improvements.

Changes:
1. Dropped support for Windows 98 and Windows 2000.
2. Traffic monitoring is not on automatically at startup.

I am a big fan of AnVir PRO, and have it placed in Start.
But changes have come to the company, and I am not excited:
Be aware of "Full installation"'s default settings during installation:

Be aware that I know nothing about Reg Organizer; it might even be a good program. Might.

General Software Discussion / Re: Universal Marker
« Last post by Curt on February 05, 2012, 08:51 AM »
I have never heard about an application for this speciality. You asked two or three questions: One about html files: well, any html editor can do that, and another question about universal or at least "some" file types - I guess you mean text-based files: WordPad or any other Rich Text editor. But they might change the original format. If the file is not a text file, you can use almost any screen capturer's picture editor, but obviously only on a picture copy of the original "thing".

Found Deals and Discounts / Image Mapper $5
« Last post by Curt on February 04, 2012, 04:16 PM »
CoffeeCup Image Mapper is exactly 3 years of age, so CoffeeCup is celebrating the day by offering Image Mapper for merely $5. Unfortunately I don't know what the normal price is, so I can't tell you if this is a good deal... And I don't know for how long the price will stay. Edited: The offer ends "today"! Normal price is $29

http://www.coffeecup.com/image-mapper/

Edited: It is version 4.2

So how does it work?
Imagine you’ve got one giant super-cool image but you want different parts of it to be clickable. Sure, you could chop it up into dozens of tiny pieces, painstakingly reassembling them on a webpage so that certain parts are links...but that would be a horrible waste of time!

Welcome to the wonderful world of image mapping. Just load up your picture, draw shapes around clickable parts of it, and supply links to create hot spots in your image. Use squares, rectangles, circles, or the unique free-form chicken-nugget-shaped buttons (really). Here’s a view of the Image Mapper workspace:

imagemap.jpg

Hey, can you give me some inspiration?
Of course! Get a diagram of the solar system and draw circles around the sun, each planet, and their moons. Now drop in links to more information for each celestial body.

Wait, wait, here’s a better one: You have a map of Europe and want each country to be clickable. Simply load up the image and use the polygon tool to draw borders around the countries.

Really fine find, lanux128

But this is HUGE!    (1.89 GIGAbytes, still uninstalled!)

Can anyone tell something about the various modules?

Edited:
It should be said that DAZ still will be expensive, free program or not. The company is even saying that "in average, Premium members saved $252 last year". But in order to "save" $252, you first have use a lot of money; To begin with, Premium membership is $100 per year.

However, the new guy is young, and idealistic about the project, so for some years I guess it will keep on being a fine tool.

It has been interesting to follow ShiningMasamune's work with his new version of QTTabBar on his >commit log<. Now he has finished the Options Dialog:
