^ I really liked it.  I'm glad that Marvel is finally embracing magic.  I didn't find the plot that predictable- I didn't see the twist coming at all, personally.

Stop Windows 10 from Automatically Rebooting

My NANY for the year is to make a utility that makes it easier to set active hours for the average user and have it longer than 12 hours.  However, that's a bandaid on a larger problem, i.e. windows automatically and regularly rebooting your machine.  I found a way around that on techjourney.net via stackexchange.

http://superuser.com...r-installing-updates

https://techjourney....pdate-in-windows-10/ (http://archive.is/3ZOcP)

I just went through setting it up, because I was annoyed that windows restarted a couple of days ago... and wants to restart again today, and I'm in the middle of something.  We'll see if it works... (this was using the Disable Reboot Task steps)

Note: in the steps, there is one that says go to %windows%.  That path doesn't work for me.  The fully expanded path is: C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\UpdateOrchestrator

I don't run Windows 10 but came across this today:  http://www.addictive...ows-update-kb3201845

Just in case the link goes down... the suggestion is

Assuming you have the update installed, and you are getting high or 100% disk usage it is likely the update is responsible for it. To fix the problem open Command Prompt with administrative rights. Run the following command to fix the problem.

Code: Text [Select]
  1. WPR -cancel

What Does This Command Do?
WPR refers to Windows Performance Recorder. It’s a Windows tool that records how well your system is performing. It does so by recording system events. The increased usage is due to this tool working. The command will stop the tool’s current recording session. No data from it will be saved. Normally, it is saved to your disk so you can look at it later and check out what’s wrong with your system.

Each time you boot your system, this tool runs in the background which is why you will need to run the command again each time you boot your system. After applying the fix, my own disk usage went from 92% to 10%.

It’s possible that the disk usage is genuine or that it is being caused by something else. If after running this command, you get the message ‘There are no trace profiles running’, it simply means the Windows Performance Recorder tool isn’t running and it isn’t the cause of the problem.

It’s not clear why this tool is causing problems after the update but that is just what Windows 10 and its updates do now. This solution comes from Reddit user YukiNagatoKyo.

I found it similar to Ex Machina ... I'm sure there'll be at least another 4 or 5 movies on the same premise in the pipeline since they'll all want to jump on the bandwagon.

I can see that comparison.  But Ex Machina was well done.  This... wasn't.  It was as you said... a bandwagon jumper.

I was recently on two 20 hour flights- first time in business class, then on the way back in economy.  First leg, recommended.  Second leg, not so much.  But during the flight, they had an impressive number of films for free.

Pete's Dragon

Great movie, and the unusual great remake.

Independence Day: Resurgence

Not as good as the first, and not even so good as a sequel, but an Ok movie in and of itself if you gave it some other name.  Too much money grabby vibes and definitely manipulative in regards to the old characters.

Morgan

Interesting premise (corporate troubleshooter must decide if a project involving an artificially created life form should be terminated - and the subject also), and interesting moral implications (is the lifeform truly a human?  when does that happen?  what rights does 'it' truly have), but too self aware and, dare I say it, pretentious for my tastes.  I tried to get through it, but it just became bogged down in the less than stellar implementation of the concept.

Central Intelligence

It was better than I thought it would be, and I had to stifle laughter out of respect for fellow passengers more than once.  The premise is rather far fetched, but what else do you expect?  The humor gets rather low brow at times, but again, what do you expect?  But it was fun to watch.

Jason Bourne

It's nothing new, but a lot more of the same.  How long can one intelligence agency be after one person without getting lucky once?  Well done, stylish, and great action scenes.  Just nothing new nor surprising in terms of plot.  But I had fun watching it.

There's only so much new you can watch, especially as I was supposed to be sleeping at some point.  So watched some old movies also to make sure that I didn't have to pay attention, including: All three Captain America movies (hold up very well to re-watch), Warrior (one of my favorite movies), Thor, both Avengers (still say the second one is a good movie), Ant-Man (great heist caper) and Guardians of the Galaxy (can't go wrong with that one).

There was one more new movie that I watched, but I can't even remember what it was, it was that bland.  I'll post it up if I remember.

@Deozaan ^^: Hey, don't knock it. Some comments would seem to demonstrate that other forum members occasionally see amongst @panzer's excessively loquacious posts references to films that are quite interesting or that they had not known of before and liked them, or something.

Similarly, though I haven't checked, I seem to recall that it might have been he that also authored some comments with references to great vids, on the short vids thread. Anyway, whoever it was, I blame them because it caused me to waste a great deal of time looking at videos when I could have probably been doing something more useful.

I actually agree with Deo, just to give an alternate supporting view.  It might be interesting to get a better sample.  When I come here and it's just a name without a recommendation, I just skip.

I had the same problem just yesterday.  I did the following - don't know which fixed it.

1. Disable Windows Search - from an elevated command prompt, type net.exe stop "Windows search".  You'll have to go into the services applet to disable it permanently, but that should stop it for long enough for you to see if it is just that.  It wasn't for me, but after some thought, I went ahead and disabled it anyway because of my third piece of advice below.

2. Disable Superfetch.  I remembered something about this from when w10 first came out.  Similarly to the above, the command is net.exe stop superfetch.  Same applies as above if you want to make this permanent.

3. After I did the above, I didn't notice a difference.  So I ran chkdsk, and disabled both of the above permanently before I rebooted for the chkdsk.  command, just for completeness: chkdsk.exe /r

After that ran, the usage stopped after reboot.  Again, not sure which step fixed it... I guess I could have done it more scientifically, but I wasn't doing it for science.  ;D

Living Room / IndieGoGo to go after delinquent campaigns
« Last post by wraith808 on December 09, 2016, 12:30 AM »
https://www.cnet.com...ter-flaky-campaigns/

Indiegogo campaign owners be warned: The crowdfunding platform can send a collection agency after you.

As of Wednesday, a new addition to the site's terms of use lets Indiegogo take more serious measures to return pledged funds to backers after a campaign has breached its terms of service, or hasn't fulfilled its promise to those backers after the a campaign has ended.

"Indiegogo periodically makes changes meant to improve the experience for both backers and campaign owners on the platform," the company said in the statement.

Otherwise, Indiegogo's refund policy, which allows the platform to withhold money until the campaign ends, remains the same.

There's an inherent optimism in having a small mob of people give a little bit of money in order to bring a product to market, and thereby subvert the traditional way product development and manufacturing works. But there have been plenty of cases where campaigns buckled after becoming overwhelmed by demand, ran into unexpected issues or were outright fraudulent in the first place.

A December 2015 study from the University of Pennsylvania, which crowdfunding site Kickstarter now has housed on its site, found that 9 percent of Kickstarter campaigns did not deliver rewards promised to backers.

Sometimes campaigns are flagged and suspended on time, sometimes they're not. For instance, in January 2015, a project called Zano launched on Kickstarter for a small drone that could take video and pictures. It raised more than $3 million, but production and delivery issues meant that most backers never got their drone.

To this point, backers have mostly taken the hit as platforms don't always guarantee projects. In May, PayPal ended protection it offered customers investing in crowdfunding campaigns, meaning no more refunds when the campaign goes awry.

Indiegogo also published a blog post on trust and safety saying, "We will do everything in our power to recover funds for our backers, including contacting third-party collections agencies." Though, the post also said in certain cases, the platform will reach out to the campaign owner first.

I have a recent Pro edition of Visual Studio but I cannot feature xaml.

I'm not a fan of XAML either. But you can do a forms based project in VS that will give you the drag and drop components option. The last few project I've done were all in C# using a forms project (using the free VS Community Edition), and it's surprisingly easy to work with.

At some point, if I use drag and drop components, the ordering and such gets really messed up- which is the reason I stopped using it other than as a reference to how the form looks.  And when you're dealing with it from a programmatic standpoint, figuring out focus and such becomes a nightmare!

Years ago I saw an infographic somewhere that indicated there aren't more than 5 certificate providers globally. All the companies that offer certificates are either subsidiaries or reselling. Which was a bit unsettling then. I don't think this situation has improved much in this current day and age, though I probably should delve into this again someday.

That's one of the reasons LetsEncrypt was created.  It's an unaffiliated signing agent.

It's pretty easy... as long as you don't fall into the old habits of trying to explicitly position things, but rather use layout.

For example, my tool for NANY (I need to get more time to get back on this)

Code: C# [Select]
  1. <Window x:Class="MMAHW.ActiveHoursView"
  2.         xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
  3.         xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
  4.         xmlns:wpfTool="clr-namespace:Xceed.Wpf.Toolkit;assembly=Xceed.Wpf.Toolkit"
  5.         Title="MMAHW!" Height="350" Width="350"
  6.         WindowStyle="None"
  7.         AllowsTransparency="True"
  8.         ResizeMode="NoResize">
  9.     <DockPanel LastChildFill="True">
  10.         <StackPanel DockPanel.Dock="Top">
  11.             <TextBlock FontSize="20" Padding="5,10,0,10">Make My Active Hours Work!</TextBlock>
  12.         </StackPanel>
  13.         <StackPanel DockPanel.Dock="Top" >
  14.             <TextBlock Padding="10,10,0,10" FontSize="16">Set Your Active Hours</TextBlock>
  15.         </StackPanel>
  16.         <StackPanel DockPanel.Dock="Top" Orientation="Horizontal">
  17.
  18.             <TextBlock FontSize="14" Padding="15,10,20,10">Start Time</TextBlock>
  19.             <wpfTool:DateTimeUpDown FontSize="14" Format="Custom" FormatString="HH" Value="{Binding ViewModel.Model.UserActiveHoursBegin}" Width="60"/>
  20.             <TextBlock FontSize="14" Padding="20,10,20,10">End Time</TextBlock>
  21.             <wpfTool:DateTimeUpDown FontSize="14" Format="Custom" FormatString="HH" Value="{Binding ViewModel.Model.UserActiveHoursEnd}" Width="60" />
  22.         </StackPanel>
  23.         <DockPanel DockPanel.Dock="Bottom" LastChildFill="False">
  24.             <Button DockPanel.Dock="Right" Height="40" Width="75">Close</Button>
  25.             <Button DockPanel.Dock="Right" Height="40" Width="75">Apply</Button>
  26.             <Button DockPanel.Dock="Right" Height="40" Width="75">Refresh</Button>
  27.             <Button DockPanel.Dock="Left" Height="40" Width="75">Help</Button>
  28.         </DockPanel>
  29.
  30.         <StackPanel DockPanel.Dock="Top">
  31.             <TextBlock Padding="10,20,0,10" FontSize="16">Currently Set in Windows</TextBlock>
  32.             <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal">
  33.                 <TextBlock FontSize="14" Padding="15,10,20,10">Start Time</TextBlock>
  34.                 <Border BorderThickness="1" BorderBrush="Black">
  35.                     <TextBlock FontSize="14" Padding="20,10,20,10" Text="{Binding ViewModel.Model.RegActiveHoursBegin}" />
  36.                 </Border>
  37.                 <TextBlock FontSize="14" Padding="20,10,20,10">End Time</TextBlock>
  38.                 <Border BorderThickness="1" BorderBrush="Black">
  39.                     <TextBlock FontSize="14" Padding="20,10,20,10" Text="{Binding ViewModel.Model.RegActiveHoursEnd}" />
  40.                 </Border>
  41.             </StackPanel>
  42.         </StackPanel>
  43.     </DockPanel>
  44. </Window>

Which results in this:

MMAHH.png

I use dockpanels to deal with the cases where I'm trying to position containers, and stackpanels to stack things either horizontally or vertically.  And padding to set the space between elements.  If I really want to make it look nice, I use styles in order to change the controls.  Notice that there are no coordinates or anything like that in there.  For most simple projects (and some not-so-simple ones) this is more than enough.  And, though this seems like more to learn, when you get it, it's a *lot* faster than dealing with the designer.  Most of it's handled by intellisense rather than typing.

I've come to the point that I don't even look at the designer.  I just use XAML, as I'm not using coordinates, but rather container elements.

No DB elements... but can you utilize third-party components to get around that?  I remember when they used to offer free versions, I'd just use firebird for the database.

LetsEncrypt is an option.  I didn't do it because my current server doesn't support the automated way, I wasn't going to do commandline, and I wasn't going to switch servers just for that.  But if your server supports it, or you're not averse to doing it on the command line, take a look.

thanks but I dont want to have to touch the phone on the surface, is there a touchless way?

These tags don’t have batteries in them, but they do have a bit of memory. When you place your phone’s NFC reader near them, the NFC reader provides power to the tag, and can read the data from the tag. The tags are programmable, so you can write whatever data you want into the tag from your phone.

http://www.howtogeek...-your-android-phone/

NFC is a lot like RFID, only it's a more up-close-and-personal type of wireless. Whereas RFID can be used from a distance, NFC readers work at a maximum range of about 4 inches (10 centimeters). NFC readers aren't suitable for RFID-style inventory tracking; their range is too short. So NFC tags will appear in a flood of products and promotional items where bits of digitized information might come in handy.

That's exactly what I meant above.  You can monetize video a lot easier, with better conversions than text.  I prefer text- I read books, but now that my company has done away with our safarionline subscription in favor of pluralsight subscriptions, I find myself delving into subjects a lot less.  With books, if you already know part of the material, it's a lot easier to skip it, and if you want to reference the subject matter later, it's easier to find in text.  Just my feelings on the subject.  And I didn't need a video to convey it :P
