Living Room / Samsung Galaxy Gear Smart Watch
« Last post by Renegade on September 03, 2013, 05:34 AM »
Woohoo! I can talk about this now as it's out in the public! :D

http://www.cnbc.com/id/101002543

Samsung is set to launch its much anticipated smartwatch on Wednesday, marking a major milestone in the emerging product category amid concerns that the smartphone market has reached its peak.

The watch, thought to be called "Galaxy Gear," is expected to be revealed at IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin) - a global innovations show in Berlin - on Wednesday evening. A report in the Korean Times, which cited comments from a senior Samsung executive, boosted hopes of the launch, but event organizers would not confirm the release, stating only that the presentation should "not be missed."

It will be the first smartwatch release from one of the world's top two smartphone manufacturers, in a new but blossoming product category that is currently dominated by unknown startup firms. A smartwatch is a computerized wristwatch with functionality beyond simple timekeeping and Samsung's device is expected to be an accompaniment to a smartphone, rather than a standalone device with its own sim card.

Ok, while the title may be silly, it's true. Stick with a fuse. ;)

http://www.dailymail...rivacy-concerns.html

Apparently Facebook and Google "click" (follow) links in people's emails. Aside from the privacy implications, it can screw up your "stuff", especially if you buy something online, then get a "one time use" link. (Yes - they do exist, though much less now than in the past from what I've seen.) Other things are voting, unsubscribing from newsletters, etc. etc.

They cite the reason as security. (Heard that before?) Phishing, malware, etc. etc. Now, to a degree, that's also certainly true.

Not an easy one to balance, though I'd come down on the "no clicking" side. I guess I just figure that if you're greedy enough to want that 10 million dollars from Prince Whuddeva in Nairobi, well... Should we call it Internet Darwinism? :P

Anyways... a taste of the article:

Test 'reveals Facebook, Twitter and Google snoop on emails': Study of net giants spurs new privacy concerns
  • Study set out to test confidentiality of 50 of the biggest Internet companies
  • Researchers sent unique web address in private messages through firms
  • They found six of the companies opened the link from the message

This one is for Renny! (see attachment in previous post)

You're trying to trick me! But my super-powers of not pissing myself laughing have only grown stronger!!! I now have the power of pissing all over the bathroom everywhere and short circuiting cameras power!!! :P

Well, no matter the reasons behind it, it's still something that could turn out well for the people as this is in open court.  It might not pan out, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

I hope it turns out well. I'm just not holding my breath. My hopefulness is already somewhat overextended elsewhere, and I've just plain run out of it.

Non-Windows Software / Re: ANDROID: What's a good recipe viewing app?
« Last post by Renegade on September 02, 2013, 09:07 PM »
This is one of those applications that I've wanted to write for a long time. When I look at so much of what's available, I just throw my hands up in disgust. Apparently everything is much harder than it looks - Murphy was an optimist. I have no recommendations. I still use paper books for recipes as there's no advantage to using an app for me.

Maybe we were more cynical than we should have been?  Especially since they're putting their money where their mouth is:
Microsoft and Google Sue U.S. Government

Pfft! I'm still cynical. I don't see this as anything more than them simply trying some damage control. If they actually gave a rat's pitootie, they would have done that long ago. If they had any balls, they'd simply blow the whistle and claim 4th Amendment violations were going on, i.e. the government is overstepping its power.

They've probably had number crunchers run through how much the negative publicity will hurt them, and decided that spending the money on lawyers will give them a net better position.

Crocodile tears.

Living Room / Tech Startup Bootcamp
« Last post by Renegade on September 02, 2013, 05:31 AM »
Just stumbled across this:

http://exosphe.re/

Sounds like a crazy, wild, amazing chance for anyone looking for a massive change, though I think it's better suited to someone younger - bootcamp/startup/etc.

  • More than 300 hours of instruction, mentoring, and assisted project work.
  • Weekend excursions to the mountains, the beach, and maybe even the desert.
  • Access to a world class team of mentors and workshop facilitators that have generated millions of dollars in sales, sold their companies, gone public, and are young icons of entrepreneurship in technology, design, and finance.
  • Guidance in generating income while you are in Chile.
  • A life changing experience in a genuine community discovering yourself and figuring out how to shape the future.
  • Three months of co-working & mentoring at Exosphere after the Bootcamp is over!
  • Ask us about affordable accommodation options in Santiago--we'll help you out!

The list of instructors there seems pretty heavy duty.

Jailbreak the iPhone. That's the statement.

That's one interesting take on it.

If you look around in public, people seem to be slaves to (imprisoned by) their phones. I took it more along those lines.

Forget that it's fashioned after an iPhone. Look past that. It's a pretty strong statement and beautifully executed.

« Last post by Renegade on August 31, 2013, 05:36 AM »
Be careful what you wish for.

Still wishing for it to go higher and higher! :P (That ain't gonna change!) ;D ($138 or so at the moment.)

1) SQ1.TV

But, there's a new Kickstarter thingamajig for a Bitcoin TV show or somethingishily like that.

http://www.kickstart...-phenomenon-on-sq1tv

https://www.sq1.tv/

Will be interesting to see how that turns out.

2) Havelock Investments

Just for anyone that does use bitcoin, Havelock Investments has a range of stocks you can buy & sell, but ONLY in BTC.

http://havelockinvestments.com/

Here's an example of one of their stocks:

http://havelockinves.../fund.php?symbol=VTX

It's kind of fun(d) to play around with it. :P I've played around with some, and it is kind of funky fun buying & selling in BTC and weighing that against BTC/fiat. Just some fun mental math. I'll skip any commentary on any of the funds or that though. Just mentioning it in case anyone else is using bitcoins and interested in a bit of fun there.

Living Room / Wicked Apple Webkit Exploit!
« Last post by Renegade on August 31, 2013, 12:46 AM »
This is fun!

WARNING: This will crash Webkit on Apple platforms.

https://zhovner.com/tmp/killwebkit.html

Discussion of it is here:

https://news.ycombin....com/item?id=6293824

I won't paste the text here, but it is only a little bit of text. About 40 characters. It's safe on Windows in Chrome.

I tested it on my Mac, and it does crash Safari.

Have a look though. And remember to send the URL to all your favourite people using a Mac, then giggle when they start screaming at you~! :P ;D

Would make a really good little clip to store in CHS for future reference~! :P

Living Room / Kiss Encryption Goodbye... :*

ORIGINAL POST

I saw a relatively innocuous line in a news story, but it's implications are serious.

http://www.thestar.c...owden_documents.html

She said that she had been advised that the hard drive contains “approximately 58,000 U.K. documents which are highly classified in nature, to the highest level.”

Goode said the process to decode the material was complex and that “so far only 75 documents have been reconstructed since the property was initially received.”

It's odd that they used the word "reconstructed", but not surprising as simply using the correct terminology, "cracked" or "decrypted", would just be, well, too truthful. (Never mind "received" being substituted for "stolen"...)

Now, given that Edward Snowden knows what he's doing, this should be very frightening for a lot of people, if anyone is paying attention, which I doubt.

Now if we can just find a judge that is astute enough to fine them for contempt of reality while throwing this nonsense case out we can get on with the process of trying to find a glimmer of hope for our currently seriously jacked-up excuse for a society.

BWAHAHAHAH~!

You gave me a nice belly laugh there! ;D

"contempt of reality" ;D 8) That's too good! I'm going to steal and recycle that one! (Please don't tell me you've copyrighted/patented/trademarked it. ;) )

Judging from the icon it looks like it's supposed to represent your motherboard. Is this a Dell computer? That appears to be a model designation for one of their motherboards.

Ditto.

The primary nodes under the computer are all discrete pieces of hardware. But I don't know why you don't have a + there to expand it. Odd.
