Yeah, perhaps that genre is too cerebral for when you need to concentrate.
Although sometimes that's a good thing. I'm right now listening to Special Xmas through the XM Radio at work.
I can't help it, something about offbeat music just pushes my buttons...

Do you remember the Looney Tunes cartoon "Mouse Wreckers" where two mice (Hubie and Bertie) induce insanity in Claude cat by nailing all the furniture upside down?  ;D ;D ;D

Well, some college kids went and done the same trick to one of their buddies.

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Command-line spellcheck utility
« Last post by Edvard on November 22, 2006, 06:31 PM »
OK, here's what I'm proposing: Say you're doing something mundane and want to know how to spell a word and you don't want to open up a big program just to grok the spell checker. All you want to do is hit Win+R or a CLI terminal and type:
spell <insert word here>
and you'll get either a confirmation of your Jedi spelling skills, or a gentle rebuke with a suggestion or two (a la Google when it says "Did you mean...")
I realize there probably is a program like that somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it, and Clipboard Help 'n Spell is more than what I'm looking for...

Can you confirm that Litestep tip, screen shotties? Any Explorer replacements that let you dispose of the ever present Icon?

First of all, Litestep does not give any desktop at all by default. You have to load and configure a desktop module like Desktop2, jDesk or xDesktop. Desktop2 does not allow icons anyway.

Perusing the documentation, I could not find any desktop modules that let you have icons smaller than 16 px but xDesktop allows text-only icons. ;)

WE can deploy the best of open source and proprietary software side-by-side
*Ahem* IF you have a valid Microsoft License to do so... read the fine print.
2619
To hide Desktop Icons:
1- With a registry hack
2- Using Active Desktop
3- Download IconDesk, HideIcons or Iconoid

To have smaller Icons:
um... Good one. Litestep has some desktop modules that may allow small icons but that's going a little beyond shell tricks.

Personally I use PowerPro for a whole slew of things, hiding desktop icons being one of them. The downside is you don't have access to your Recycle Bin.

General Software Discussion / Re: "Mouser": a new concept of a keyboard mouse.

Also, Jgpaiva's GridMove is an excellent program for arranging windows without the mouse, but to tell you the truth, I wanted something just a tiny bit simpler. Here's an .ahk script I came up with:
ScrH = %A_ScreenHeight%
ScrW = %A_ScreenWidth%
ScrHm := ScrH/2
ScrWm := ScrW/2

^#NumPad1::
Gosub, window
WinMove,A,,0,ScrH-WinH
Return
^#NumPad2::
Gosub, window
WinMove,A,,ScrWm-WinWm,ScrH-WinH
Return
^#NumPad3::
Gosub, window
WinMove,A,,Scrw-WinW-40,ScrH-WinH
Return
^#NumPad4::
Gosub, window
WinMove,A,,0,ScrHm-WinHm
Return
^#NumPad5::
Gosub, window
WinMove,A,,ScrWm-WinWm,ScrHm-WinHm
Return
^#NumPad6::
Gosub, window
WinMove,A,,ScrW-WinW,ScrHm-WinHm
Return
^#NumPad7::
Gosub, window
WinMove,A,,0,0
Return
^#NumPad8::
Gosub, window
WinMove,A,,ScrWm-WinWm,0
Return
^#NumPad9::
Gosub, window
WinMove,A,,ScrW-WinW,0
Return
^#q::
ExitApp

window:
WinGetPos,,,WinW,WinH,A
WinWm := WinW/2
WinHm := WinH/2
Return
To use: Press Ctrl+Win+ a key representing a compass point on your number pad and it will throw the active window to that edge of the screen. Ctrl+Win+5 will center it and Ctrl+Win+Q will exit the script.

Living Room / Re: Linux security programs
« Last post by Edvard on November 14, 2006, 11:30 AM »
Ok, let me be a little more verbose...

A Poor Man's Install of a Linux Live CD consists of:
1) Saving the .iso file on your hard disk
2) Booting with either -
    A) A floppy disk containing a boot program that will launch your .iso file as if you were running the live CD
    B) The Live CD which you then tell (via "cheatcodes") to launch the .iso file instead of continuing with the CD

About cheatcodes: Usually, a Live CD will give you the option at boot-time whether to continue booting as-is or to enter optional codes to direct the system to do different tricks. Some of these include loading the system entirely into memory (w00t!), loading extra drivers for weird hardware (parallel-port CD burners, etc.), choosing an  alternate graphics mode, etc. Knoppix has cheatcodes that allow you to read the system from a location other than the physical CD. Knoppix has a boot cheatcode called "bootfrom" that does just this. When you see the splash screen with the boot options offered, type after the "boot:" prompt
bootfrom=/dev/hda1/path/to/knoppix.iso
(remember, Linux uses forward slashes...)
if you put your knoppix.iso right on your C:\ drive then it would be:
bootfrom=/dev/hda1/knoppix.iso

Let me know if I can be any more help.

P.S. A while ago, I had quite a bit to say over here on the subject of Linux. Hope it helps.

General Software Discussion / Save flash games for standalone play
« Last post by Edvard on November 13, 2006, 06:35 PM »
I've heard in this forum more than a few times the desire to be able to play flash games offline, as well as discussion about the ethics of doing such a thing, but I couldn't find the relevant threads to post this tiny gem to. Being on dialup, the option for me is clear. And now that I've found Swf2Exe, things are even easier...

http://www.mmshall.c.../26/swf2exe-161.html
swf2exe.png
SWF<->EXE Features:
1. Easy to convert flash between swf and exe.
2. Easy to release your flash cards in exe format to your friends, they can view it without Flash player.
3. Support drag-drop method.

Actually there are many different ways to run a live CD off your hard drive. The most common is to use a boot floppy or USB to kick up the .iso saved on your hard disk, or booting from the CD but passing the "tohd" and "fromhd" cheatcodes to use the .iso instead of the CD.
