i'm not really adding anything but i do agree that it is a useful tip. i've been using _ and . and ! for years to prefix 'special' folders, thereby making them sit higher in my folder trees.

adds a kind of extra hierarchy to folder organisation by making the special prefix character folders rest above standard named folders.

unfortunately, photomesa crashed after about 1 minute of me loading it up. it looked like an interesting app for image management whilst it was working - but as i use acdsee, it's not something i'd spend time on trying again.

as it's free, i think it would be worth testing out if you are in need of a free program for the task.

er, i've nothing to share photo wise - maybe in a few months time - so, i'm not really the right person to say if a flickr group is a good idea.

it sounds like a fun idea to me.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: drag window to edge automatically resizes it
« Last post by nudone on October 08, 2006, 07:13 AM »
well, unfortunately, i don't know what it did in previous versions because i never used a grid with the 'restore' zone built into it - so, i'd guess that it would have worked exactly like you say.

i'll forget about the restore feature - i understand now why you've made it the way it is. i'll just use a specified central window size that i can 'restore' windows to instead of actually 'restoring' them.

no worries.

is there a bug with the latest version of gridmove - or is it just something to do with my system?

when i use the 'restore' grid, my windows correctly restore to the right size but they are not restored to their original position - instead, the window remains at the age of the screen.

to be more precise: this only happens when using the 'edge drag' method. i have to confess that perhaps this has always been a problem with the 'edge drag' method as i've only just tried using the 'restore' grid with it.

any thoughts, jgpaiva?

it certainly is buggy.

edit.

may as well just say it's unusable. too much conflict with the rest of the operating system. how unfortunate.

i don't know of a taskmanager that will do what you are requesting - but that is mainly because i don't know about such things.

i'd just like to suggest an alternative: how about hiding the taskmanager completely from the kids/staff so they can't upset the machine BUT do provide a shortcut that will kill microsoft word. you could have a shortcut that ran an autohotkey script to kill word (or whatever other app that locks up frequently).

there's also a util that would allow you to create 'kill' shortcuts for specific applications but i can't remember the name of it at the moment.

perhaps my suggested alternative solution is pretty worthless - i don't know if you could get to the desktop or start menu when word locks up - so you wouldn't be able to run a shortcut anyway.

it's just a thought...

fantastic find, app.

the program is a bit buggy, but it's the best thing i've seen so far for the job.

looking forward to seeing the developer go on to improve it. time to click on his paypal button i think...

That's a book I read myself, and while I didn't master its techniques completely yet it's great, I can only recommend it.

brotherS, i get the impression you've been ignoring the DC GTD Experiment area of the forum. if so, any reason why?

ah yes, just read it now, thanks.

good sensible straight talking.

something like this was discussed before the DC GTD experiment became a certainty that it would happen.

maybe a similar feature will be implemented at some point but until then the biggest (and really, the most meaningful) reward is that you managed to overcome procrastination - you don't really require a badge or a label to be able to tell yourself that you accomplished something that is worthy or respect.

just keep reminding yourself of the task(s) you manage to do each day - it soon builds into a foundation you can use as self-encouragement - you'll know that you overcame procrastination once, so you can certainly do it again. it does become easier the more you do...

His latest one doesn't seem to want to work. (0 bytes)  :(

yes, i found that also. i can't get them to play using the embedded media player on the page either.

they do download if you right click and save on the link - excluding the one at the top of the list.

i've just finished listening to them all. not everything is going to appeal to people trying the DC GTD experiment but he does have some usefull insights regarding how to use your time and find motivation.

his 'articles' page is also worth reading - many of the podcasts use this material to start from. here's the link http://www.geoffthom....com/listArticle.asp

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / inspiration from Geoff Thompson

if you are into martial arts (and live in the UK) you've probably already heard of Geoff Thompson.

i first saw the man on a late night TV show that attempted to dispel the myth that martial arts are going to help you out if you are attacked by someone.

i'm sure my reaction was similar to that of other people when they first see Geoff Thompson in action and explaining his philosophy - i was absolutely astounded. like some kind of iconoclastic prophet, he explained to the audience the 'reality' of self-defence (which i won't go into, that's for him to tell you if want to learn more).

but, there is far more to Geoff Thompson than martial arts. he began as a bouncer and factory floor sweeper (i think) and has now become an extremely respected motivational author and writer. he's now also a Bafta award winner.

a few years ago i bought some of Geoff's training (self-defence) videos and a couple of his 'life-couch' motivation books. the videos were, and still are, quite revolutionary to see - they demonstrate REAL self defence techniques and theories. the books are equally inspiring as Geoff tells us how he hit rock bottom in life but made the choice to turn things around (which his business empire clearly shows that he has) and how you can perhaps make and carry out similarly life changing choices.

i admit, he doesn't really focus on 'time-management' techniques and anti-procrastination isn't really something he'll go into detail about, but he does offer a less 'business man' approach to self-motivation - which seems to be the dominant way in the business. once, he was possibly the worst kind of person you could meet - violent and likely to hit you a few too many times if you were in the wrong night club at the wrong time. now, he has transformed into one of those rare people that amaze you with their calm insightful wisdom that is all the more touching and powerful because you know of his origins.

i've made this post as i've now seen that Geoff is offering a podcast, available here http://www.geoffthompson.com/podcast.asp so, if anything i've said sounds remotely interesting then you might find the podcasts of worth.

(if you are interested in self-defence or martial arts then i thoroughly recommend Geoff's videos/dvds and books. if you want a good 'self-motivation' read then his other books are very practical and enjoyable to read - filled with all those kind of tips that seem so self evident that you just have to use them.)

oh, and here's Geoff's main home page http://www.geoffthompson.com/default.asp

i've just emailed mouser to ask what he wants in the cody art pack but i'll also ask what people will find useful here.

what kind of variations of cody are required?
2623
mouser, that truly is an ingenious idea. i'll let you know how i get on after i've tried it on my box of unrewound disks (hehe, i've just invented a word).

when i started to read your tip about using a bag i thought you were going to describe the method of putting a load of unrewound disks in an old plastic carrier bag - you then swing the bag around your head - the faster the revolutions the quicker you'll wind back the dvds.

i've tried, and yes, it does work. i suppose it's good exercise too.

warning: the problem with the swinging bag method is that you don't know when to stop - this has the damaging effect of winding the dvds too far back. when they are played back there will be a period of empty screen until they reach the correct original starting point. i understand that if done too many times the dvd can become stuck in the too far wound back state, so be careful.
