FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FarrUninstall plugin - v1.0
« Last post by mouser on August 07, 2007, 06:59 AM »
An idea before this becomes widely distributed.  I think it would be better to use a keyword to trigger the plugin that wasnt so likely to be used in normal searching.

what about instead of "un" using like "unstall" -- im just trying to think of a word that isnt likely to get typed while searching for a real program.

seems like more of a launchbar (e.g. LaunchBar Commander, True Launch Bar) than a keyboard-based launcher (e.g. FARR, Launchy).

(note: people have suggested that LaunchBar Commander and FARR be merged).

Developer's Corner / Re: C++ Development: win32 or .NET?
« Last post by mouser on August 06, 2007, 02:24 PM »
FARR is built using Borland's C++ Builder, which is basically c++ and an added layer of visual components for windows gui stuff, and a nice IDE.  It's a commercial product but you can use the new version (Turbo C++) for free if you don't need to install 3rd party components.  Its 100x nicer to do gui programs using c++ builder vs. mfc or native win32 api, in my opinion.

I'm a long time c++ coder (20 years), and it's hard to break old habits, but c++ is showing it's age these days -- and i never recommend it to new programmers.  you'll have a happier experience and learn better coding technique using a more modern language like C# or Java.

In general though you have to ask yourself what you want to code?  Do you want to do cross-platform stuff? then you can forget c++ builder. and win32 stuff.  wxwidgets could work if you still were dead set on c++.  If you just want to get a little experience coding and learn basic techniques, and windows is your main operating system, then go for c#.

what is DK?

if you are going to do .net from scratch, i'd say go for c#.
the only time i'd recommend c++ .net stuff is for legacy code.

I know i posted this before but it is so useful i have to post again.
If you are reading a long multi-page thread, the new ability to search within a thread is invaluable:

note: a normal ctrl+F from within your browser is not comparable, this can search multiple pages and do full highlighting.  really wonderful.

Another feature added is more support for manual stuff.  You can now right click and tell the updater to just download the new file for you.

Screenshot - 8_5_2007 , 6_47_04 AM.png

It will also let you customize how these files get named, and even keep an archive of every downloaded+installed update:

Screenshot - 8_5_2007 , 5_45_43 AM.png

You can now also uncheck packages you dont want to check by default (you can always check them manually with a right-click).

Ok major new version released..

The big work here under the hood (and above the hood as well), is lots of support for installing new packages, not just updating existing packages.

For example, one idea is that you should now be able to download a plugin .zip file and drag+drop it onto the dcupdater window, which will report about its contents and know where to install it and install it (or check web for update).

You could do the same with simply a plain .dcupdate file which is not yet installed.

--

This new system will be used with FARR 2 release, which will no longer come with all plugins pre-installed.  Instead, the updater for FARR will know about the available plugins, and you will be able to quickly install any plugin you want simply by choosing it in the updater.

Worth a read:

Is there a new blogger scandal brewing? Allen Stern over at CenterNetworks seems to think so. Allen takes issue with the new video blog Webb Alert (which mentioned Read/WriteWeb today), saying that the blog doesn't disclose its connection with advertising network Federated Media (which hosts it and sells advertising for it) and suspects that the whole thing may be an elaborate scheme to push traffic to FM clients (and notes that FM clients have been gushing over the show in return for the disproportionate links they get).

...

Disclosure is a tricky business and as a practice is still ill-defined even in the realm of traditional journalism. The general idea is that anything that might be seen as a potential conflict of interest between a writer and the subject of his story should be disclosed to the reader.

More from the article:

Disclosure is necessary, however, and at times I think that maybe it is the overzealous trend toward complete and utter transparency offered by bloggers that makes blogs so attractive to readers. So when should you disclose?
  • Financial association -- I don't mean advertising, which is obvious, but less clear affiliations such as investments, ownership, or partial-ownership. For example, WIRED should mention they own Reddit when they write about the company. (Of course, you might not always even know when you're investing in a company.)
  • Employment -- If you are paid by a company you are writing about as an employee, contractor, or consultant, you should disclose that.
  • Competition -- If you are writing specifically about a direct competitor to a company you are involved with in an aforementioned manner, especially if you’re writing in a negative way, it is probably best to disclose it. For example, WIRED should disclose that they own Reddit whenever they write about Digg.
  • Personal involvement - This is by far the trickiest. As I illustrated before, personal or emotional involvement with stories can get complicated and, well, personal. I don't think it always needs to be disclosed. For example, I don't feel the need to disclose my political views whenever I write about politics. However, if I'm reviewing a company run by a close friend, I would disclose that fact or pass the story to a writer with less emotional involvement.

You'll notice that I don't include a rule about disclosing when you were paid to write about a specific topic or company. The reason is that any blogger who wants to be taken seriously as a journalist cannot and will not accept money or gifts from a source (or vice versa). That said, it should also be noted that there is a big difference between accepting gifts in exchange for writing a story and accepting review copies of goods for free.

Living Room / Article: The Economics of Open Source Donations
« Last post by mouser on August 03, 2007, 06:14 PM »
Donations play a crucial role in supporting Free and Open Source Software projects. At times readers will write in to share their positive experience with a utility or program or a distribution that I have written about. Now don't confuse them with your average technical-bent-of-mind Linux user. These are accountants, home-office businessman, and even carpenters and plumbers, who've saved a lot of money thanks to open source software. And they have one question in mind -- how do I help the person behind the program?

This month, Packt columnist and open source enthusiast Mayank Sharma explores the economics behind open source projects, what they do with their donations and how crucial they can be to their future.

This is an open source tool that lets you take your spreadsheet or data files and create a web page built only using javascript, that supports interactive manipulation/sorting/filtering by viewers.

It's designed for small scale stuff, but this could be very useful for some things, like if you want to display a small table of data to your reader and want them to be able to explore the data a little.

There's a video presentation showing how it could be used for teaching here: http://bionicteachin...exhibit/Exhibit.html
They also have a wiki -- fun stuff.

Exhibit is a lightweight structured data publishing framework that lets you create web pages with support for sorting, filtering, and rich visualizations by writing only HTML and optionally some CSS and Javascript code.

It's like Google Maps and Timeline, but for structured data normally published through database-backed web sites. Exhibit essentially removes the need for a database or a server side web application. Its Javascript-based engine makes it easy for everyone who has a little bit of knowledge of HTML and small data sets to share them with the world and let people easily interact with them.
...
Exhibit consists of a bunch of Javascript files that you include in your web page. At load time, this Javascript code reads in one or more JSON data files that you link from within your web page and constructs a database implemented in Javascript right inside the browser of whoever visits your web page. It then dynamically re-constructs the web page as the visitor sorts and filters through the data. As the visitor interacts with the web page, only the web browser is responsible for providing the interaction; the web server is no longer needed.
...
We also provide a complementary service called Babel that lets you convert data from various sources, including tab-separated values (copied straight from spreadsheets) and Bibtex files, into formats that Exhibit understands.

Important fine print, emphasis mine:
Exhibit currently only scales to a few hundreds of items, but maybe that's all you need. Furthermore, we are working on optimizing Exhibit and on ways for you to smoothly transit over to server-side solutions as your data sets grow.

Living Room / Re: Amazon to expand their payment system to compete with PayPal?
« Last post by mouser on August 03, 2007, 05:21 PM »
More relevant text:
Developers are free to set up an unlimited number of payment instructions. This makes it possible, for example, to have a different set of payment instructions for each counterparty with which you do business.

Developers can create payment instructions that are as simple or complex as they desire.  For example, creating a relatively complex business model around micro-payments is easy to do with Amazon FPS. Our aggregation feature lets you track and aggregate micro-payments into a single payment transaction, saving on transaction processing costs and avoiding having to build complex ledger functionality into your own applications.  Without this capability micro-payments would be difficult or cost-prohibitive.

Micro-Payments Support: With Amazon FPS you can track and aggregate micro-payments (e.g. payments less than $0.50 or even $0.01) into a single payment transaction and can charge the customer before (prepaid) or after (postpaid) the service is provided. This features lets you minimize transaction processing costs and avoid having to build complex ledger functionality into your applications.

Aggregate micro-transactions into a single larger transaction using Prepaid and Postpaid capabilities.

If it seems like i'm getting a bit excited about this new service from amazon.com it's because I am.  Amazon.com has always felt to me like they are serious about their web services, and interested in building things right.

so it looks like they copied paypal for the most common datapoint (2.9% plus 30 cents).
but they added more friendly micro-payment rates for < $10 payments, which is somewhat exciting.

Commissions they take from a $2 payment break down like this:
Amazon = 10 cents + 5 cents = $0.15
Paypal = 30 cents + 5.8 cents = $0.36
