Eassos Partition Guru page:
http://www.eassos.com/partitionguru.php

Seems to have an impressive range of capabilities - also does imaging of partitions (below from a 2013 review).
Also seems to be updated regularly.

Data Recovery
When the operating system deletes a file, it just marks the file “deleted” and make the disk space taken by the deleted file as “free”. Data isn’t gone and still stays on the disk. It is possible to rescue these lost files before they are overwritten.

PartitionGuru can recover deleted files that are emptied from recycle bin deleted by “shift + delete” as well as recover formatted files; besides it can recover lost or formatted partitions and repair partition table.

Backup & restore
A better way to avoid data loss is to backup data. Users should develop such a habit of backing up important data timely. PartitionGuru provides powerful partition backup function which is similar to Ghost’s backup and restore function. PartitionGuru is much more powerful, for it supports incremental backup which increases practicability and convenience. It can back up partition to image file from which the partition can be restored.

Disk & partition management
PartitionGuru makes disk and partition management an easy job. It can create partition, delete partition, format partition, resize and split partition without data loss, assign drive letters, etc. With all these functions, even non-professional users can manage disk and partition excellently. As to functions like convert partition type, convert partition table and manage dynamic disk cater to computer professionals.

Other functions

-operate virtual disk and recover data from it, various virtual disks are supported;
- make bootable USB disk, which is very useful especially when the system can’t boot normally or the operating system crashes;
- construct virtual RAID and recover data from it;
- delete data permanently, so that data can never be recovered by any means;
-detect and repair bad sectors.

General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for Software with this feature
« Last post by tomos on July 08, 2015, 03:27 PM »
I haven't tried FreeFileSync but it claims to let you create your own rules.  Also it says it can sync depending on content, date or size.  So, just reading the features(which is always dangerous) it would seem creating your own rule would just entail choosing name size and content being the same.

http://www.thewindow...rs-with-freefilesync

Edit: Note that I just downloaded and ran a scan with MBAM.  It shows the installer has Open Candy.  :down:

it's okay as long as you carefully check options. See also IainB's review here on dc:

If there aren't many duplicates in the hard drive, then manually selecting the ones to remove isn't a big deal.   But when having to remove hundreds or even thousands of duplicates, this can take many hours of work.   An example of having such large numbers of duplicates is when people use hard drive backup programs and the programs keeps copying the same files over and over into different folders and mixing them up until the hard drive is full and the user doesn't know what to do.

yeah, in my experience, duplicate file finders still need a lot of work after the duplicates have been found. But maybe there's really good duplicate file finders out there (havent tried any in a few years).

[Could they/you just dump everything on an external drive and start from scratch?]
Relatives of mine want me to sort out their photos - they used big SD cards and didnt delete photos from their cameras, so they kept uploading the same photos again and again - often using different methods (so: different names as well as timestamps). That is a nightmare, gigabytes of duplicated material - and I have to admit, a nightmare I've been avoiding... so, if a solution is found here, I could give it a go as well ;-)

If you had a programme that would locate moved files - and do a bit comparison of files with the same size (but possibly different date &/or name) -
if you had that - you could just keep merging folders (or copying and deleting copied folders). At some stage you'd have to run a duplicate file finder on the remaining files. Syncovery could do the merging bit intelligently (finding moved files) - but not directly - you might have to sync both ways - and then delete one 'side'.
I might try that at the weekend with those photos I was talking about.

Syncovery uses MD5 checksums - but the option appears to do this on all the files - which would take a wet week to run.
The ideal, IMO, would be to compare file sizes, and only do bit comparisons of files that are the same size (regardless of the filename/date).

looking for something to soften the sharp edge of a laptop - the edge your wrists might rest on.

I find when typing I dont lean on that edge, but when surfing I do - which causes wrist problems.

Roll up a bath towel and secure it into a roll with some hair elastics.

I requested hair elastics from my niece for my last birthday - I use them in the kitchen as strong elastic bands, but still have a few extra so will try that out :up:

Had another one that had a coiled lead from the USB plug to the LED and clipped on the top of your screen, that was OK until the clip broke  :-\

I was considering what sounds like that one:

then thought I'd see if anyone had ideas for a non-USB one... [that didn't involve a white desktop :P :D]

Virtualizing for your own personal use only? Go here.

that looks interesting :up:

EDIT//
on the pricing/compare-editions link, they list the free version for 'Home & SMB' use - which I presume is small business.

The other consideration is very soon we are supposed to see high capacity SSDs cheap.  Fragmentation and thrashing considerations disappear.  Just stick the stuff where you want.

this is very much a factor for the future - drive is 500GB. I would like to replace with same size SSD within the next year or two (or when they come down in price).
Because of that, I'd like to create an image of the OS - and do a test-restore - to be sure it works on at least a regular HDD.

General Software Discussion / Re: Managing Flash in your browser

Just a side note, I was surprised to see Cyberfox just downloading a file was using over 90% CPU which settled down to about 60% while the file was still downloading.  Mustang browser with three instances of chrome.exe running used less CPU downloading the same file from the same page.  Cyberfox is x64 and mustang is x86 if that makes a difference.  It seems like lots of CPU usage to do not much lately.  Strange.

MS have a chance to do something right with their new browser - if they take note of the troubles with all the others.
I mean I've even been trying IE lately - what with FF wanting to take over your machine completely if you watch a video; Chrome works better, but still needs a lot of resources, and really get's those fans going on lower specs machines.

Laptop related:

looking for a keyboard light that does not use USB -
*or*
a light that does use USB - but without having a projecting connection. Something like many power cables which have an 'L' shape connector would probably be good.

Logic:
anything that projects out from a laptop I'm using gets knocked around on a regular basis - and will break (including probably breaking the USB socket).

(Note: it appears from amazon reviews that most lights are far too bright.)

^ Lots to think about here ^
(thanks all)

I would normally move the 'My' folders to a separate partition. On my desktop, I have temp and data on a separate drive, but dont have that option here.
Am encouraged that you have these in separate partitions on the same drive Shades (and dont seem to be having any negatives).

I see that appdata on my desktop (also Win.7x64) is at ~ 7GB (!) That would have to be backed up anyways, so I will have a look for options for moving it (this seems a bit complicated and requires a -- presumably non-oem -- windows install disc, which I dont have).

This is more important to keep them from bursting when you have it on your lap than when it's in the freezer, since shortly after your body heat hits it, there is the potential for a very sudden, loud, visible, ice shattering expansion. It's similar to the sudden shattering that occurs when dropping an ice cube in a room temperature drink, but on a much larger scale.
well,
I'm glad I asked about that ;)

Also, you can drag and drop any other file link into VUE, and a link gets created with the name of the file.

Guess I better try VUE out...

Unfortunately VUE's shortcuts are unusable with a qwertz keyboard. (I tried changing the VUE language to German in the hopes that the shortcuts might change - but no luck.)

Living Room / Partitioning or Not w. single HDD?
« Last post by tomos on July 06, 2015, 09:39 AM »
Wondering about pros and cons of partitioning a single HDD  [*not* SSD] machine (laptop as it happens, Win.7 x64).

1) If you partition, you can back up data and system/OS much more efficiently.
1a) But maybe there's a way to create an image of your system excluding the data/images/etc.? (I will have to check this one out myself too - I installed Aomei Backupper Free on the machine.)

2) I believe that if you dont partition (OS / Data) the harddrive will be read much more efficiently and less stressfully?

Are there any other factors? - or thoughts :)
